Lalo is a super nice man but the worst professor I have ever had. The lectures make no sense and are all over the place, the tests are super specific and confusing even to the TAs. The averages for tests were 65 every time and he blamed the students for the low average and didnt think to assess the way he was teaching
Lalo is a horrible lecturer and made all of his students suffer. The amount of information you are expected to learn and memorize is insane. He does not answer his emails and explain things very poorly. I am going to have to retake this class because of him.
this is actually the worst lecturer ive ever had. I'm not sure if he knows what he's explaining. He just reads straight off the slides and when he tries to explain further he gets confused and backtracks like 20 times. If you take class with him I wouldn't bother attending lecture just read the book
Seems like a nice guy, but genuinely one of the worst lecturers I've had. Most lectures it felt like him rambling on incoherently about whatever topic he was teaching and it was difficult to learn anything properly. Once he took over bio lectures, I became much more reliant on the book for my learning.
Lalo was by far the worst professor that I have had, and probably will have here at UCSB. He doesn't care about his students at all and would care less if the kids in his class pass or not. One of the TA's this year had read over his test before and let us know that if we would have taken the test, there would be no way he could get above an 80%.
Genuinely one of the worst professors Ive had here. His lectures are confusing at best and he often mixes up his info and backtracks. Moves too quickly and doesnt put much stuff on his slides so he expects you to listen but is a horrible lecturer. Feels more like a student doing a presentation than a professor. Print out lecture before/ use ipad.
Lalo is a terrible lecturer. He reads off of his slides and lists information instead of explaining it. He has questions on the exams which test minute details from lecture which are unrelated to the big picture. He conditions his students to memorize information rather learn it. IMO the worst new hire in the MCDB department.
Definitely recommend the MCDB 11-12-13 series for freshmen. Super chill 1 unit once a week class discussion section with some cool people and TA's. Some nice topics covered and was good to have other ppl to talk to who are pursuing similar career paths especially during the online year. Lalo is a super great guy too, def take MCDB 1A-B with him too
The class was more of a chill discussion section so I don't know anything about his teaching, however he was a caring, open-minded guy and I would definitely take a class with him again. If I had an issue with a deadline I would for sure feel comfortable asking him for help.
Professor Lalo is intelligent and nice. He always tries different ways of explaining things to help students understand the materials better. He also cares a lot about his students and wants them to success. His classes were challenging but you would learn a lot from him as long as you worked hard for them.
Meet once a week with a 3rd or 4th year bio student to literally just talk. Short homework assignments that take 10 minutes at most. 1 unit P/NP class.
His midterm short answers are all or no points. He's never posts lectures on the correct day. Got mad at a group of kids for cheating and almost threatened to redo the entire exam again. Seems like a nice guy but online is just horrible. Leaves out a lot of stuff in lecture that ends up on the test.
Lalo is super nice and wants you to succeed. You have to make sure you memorize and understand all the concepts and pay attention to what he spends a lot of time on. Exams can be tricky because one small detail can change what a sentence means so make sure to read very carefully.
Professor Lalo is a kind professor but the questions and tests he writes are a bit... meh. Theyre tough because they require very careful complete reading of the question and ALL of answer choices. I missed questions not due to content knowledge but from not reading carefully which is extremely frustrating to see. Solid choice but beware.
Lalo is an amazing and kind professor! I took his course over the summer (A LOT of info). The tests were rather difficult as he asked you to tie in almost everything you've learned, with one minuscule error in analysis in an answer resulting in the incorrect one. Cs on both midterms (20% each), A- on the final (40%) so there's a BIG curve!!
Lalo and Mike do an amazing job teaching MCDB together. Lalo truly cares about his students and helps you get to the right answer, without handing you the information. He did utilize the recording additional lectures feature more than Mike did, as we didn't complete all information in class. Overall, still one of my favorite professors taken.
Super passionate about biology and genetics. He's just a bit hard to understand during lecture because of his accent, and he sometimes makes mistakes about what he's saying. Just gets a bit confusing for the students.
Hardest class I've ever taken aside from Ochem because of Lalos tests. I took this course over summer- 5 weeks. We had loads of material up until the day of each exam. Talks fast at times and makes bad test questions which could be interpreted multiple ways. Average on the first midterm was 55%. A 3rd of the students didn't pass.
Bio with Lalo is such a joy. Really glad I got to take him for the intro MCDB courses.
To study for the midterms just want all the lectures again. If you understand the concepts you can easily get an A. Also don't take the online quizzes, iClicker accuracy, and worksheets lightly because those are your free points. Lalo is a great teacher and if you want to put in the effort you will get in the grade.
Lalo and Mike are the best professors I've had so far, I want to go back a retake their class because they genuinely care about their students. All the lectures are recorded and posted online so if you relisten to them you'll be fine. The tests are like the weekly quizzes just different numbers. If you're struggling talk to them they want to help.
Lalo is one of the best teachers I've had at UCSB. He's amazing at explaining things clearly and has a great sense of humor. Tests are not easy, but they are fair and it's easier to succeed in this class than in the big lecture. 10/10 would recommend!
Lalo is an amazing professor, super nice and always willing to help. Tests are a little complex and hard but the professors are really there to help. Go to lecture and section and study, and you'll be okay. Online quizzes, iclicker, and section worksheets help to boost grade a little.
Lalo is undoubtedly one of the smartest and best professors in the MCDB department. He posts lectures online. His tests are based completely OFF OF THE LECTURES. Strict memorization will not help you, as he tests on application of concepts. Ample effort is required to pass the class, but it is easily doable. Easy going, fun guy to talk to at OH.
