Professor Tener is a pretty chill guy. I feel like his lectures aren't that helpful because there isn't a balance between theory and practice problems. He tends to focus a bit too much on theory. However, his exams are pretty straight-forward. Just do the homework on GS and do the practice exams. He also allows a note card on exams.
Tener is easily one of the best math teachers and makes 3b easy. Go to lecture, write what he writes, do the hw, and DO THE PRACTICE TESTS! Youll be just fine. No CLAS needed, just pay attention.
Tener really does his best to teach the subject, but this class is impossible without CLAS. He lets you use a notecard on the exams and final. People who didn't take Calc AB in high school struggled more but it's not impossible. He is really chill if you go to his office hours.
Super nice guy and does a good job explaining things during his lectures. Sometimes goes at a fast pace but allows notecards on exams. And as long as you do the homework you should be able to pass the class no problem.
Tener is a good guy but his lectures are pretty confusing and I didnt go t oany. His tests are exactlylike the practice tests and the homework is pretty easy / helpful.
The best professor I have had. Also be ready to write down 47 in all of the example problems.
James Tener did not curve the final exam, despite it taking place 5 weeks past the last lecture date. He provided little to no clarifications when questions were asked during lecture.
The two midterms are pretty much the same as the practice midterms he post online. However, the final i not the same as the practice one. No need for a textbook; just take notes in class and listen to your TA.
Tener is an extremely good math professor. He tries his best to make you understand why things are the way they are instead of shoving equations down your throat. He is a fair professor who genuinely cares about your understanding of the topics. He is approachable and is happy to explain anything you ask in depth. Best math prof I've ever had.
Pretty easy A for a math class. He's a really nice guy, very approachable. He tries his best to make sure everyone is following him in lecture and will pause to ask for questions. 2 midterms, 1 final, weekly quizzes in section. He provides a practice exam (quite similar to the real thing) before you take each exam.
He's a great teacher and gives detailed notes. He's also very clear on what will be tested- both midterms and the final were very similar to the practice midterms he provided. I hated Calculus in high school, but this class made me change my mind. Not to mention, he's adorable.
Not a great teacher, but he's very funny and helpful if you go to office hours. He's more of a conceptual teacher rather than a practical one (a lot of explaining concepts instead of doing practice problems).
Realistically I can fully understand him, which is a real gem for math professors. Actually one of the better professors i've had here at UCSB.
Probably the best math professor I've had at UCSB and I've had several really good ones. He is pretty clear with what he expects on tests and makes learning fun. Everyone told me that math 8 would be hard, but Tener made the class easy and understandable. If you can take him you definitely should.
Tener's lectures were strikingly clear; his board-work and articulation of the material was simple and effective. He assigned weekly homework, mostly straightforward, and his tests were standard with a mix of short-answers and proofs.
best professor in math department i've had so far
Tener is a 12/10 would recommend. Great professor that is very passionate about what he does and his lectures are very clear. One of the few professors at UCSB that I actually learned from. He's also highkey attractive so its hard not to go to class.
Professor Tener is a truly inspiring professor! (So much that I changed my major to double major in math). His class is interesting, I always feel like paying attention, and he really wants you to understand what he's teaching - which makes him very patient when it comes to answering questions. Would definitely take his class again.
Reall enntertaining professor. Seem's very interested all the time and likes his job and really wants to do well. Just make sure you actually do you're homework and work and you'll be fine. Practice midterms and final very similar to actual test. Overall really enjoyed the class. HE ALSO LOOKS JUST LIKE ANDY SAMBERG!
JT is the KING. Possibly the ONLY good math teacher at this University. Sad, but true. Great with conveying material and making it easy to grasp and understand. His homework is fair, and gives unlimited tries for each problem, and makes it due after you go over the assignments, so you can always get 100%. Tests are fair. Take him if you want an A!
Professor Tener is a very solid professor who clearly and specifically explains material. He is passionate about the material and very friendly. He sometimes focuses on specific details that are unnecessary to copy down, just filter it out. Otherwise the class is fairly easily, especially if you have taken a calculus course in high school.
Tener is a great professor. He teaches you everything you need to know for the homework, and the homework will prepare you for the quizzes. Tests are also very fair. His lectures make sense and he really cares about his students understanding and learning.
Puts in a great effort when teaching. The homework may be a little confusing, but when it comes to the midterms and test he would upload practice problems that would be very similar to what was on the exam. One of the best teachers I have had here so far.
Prof. Tener was really helpful and always paused to answer questions during lecture. The webwork he assigned was really easy, and the test questions were very fair. He let us use a notecard on all tests which was AWESOME.
