Professor Pfaff is an incredible professor. Her lectures are amazing and clear. Her hmwks are hard, well made, and help you understand the material. She really puts her students first and works hard to help everyone. Don't fall behind or you might get left behind. I wish I could take her for every class and it's a damn shame she's left UCSB.

Amazing lecturer, one of the best at UCSB. However she assigns lots of very difficult homework, I never got more than 50% on any of the homework. She curves a lot though, so I still ended up with a very good grade. Mandatory attendance and iClicker questions. Only bad part of lecture was that we weren't allowed to use any electronic devices.

Professor Pfaff is the real deal. If you love the math and have the chance to learn from her do not pass it up. You will become a smarter person for it.

If you put in the work, you'll get a good grade. Extremely fair class, and she's always down to help you out if you choose to reach out to her. Really funny and makes class interesting! Goes at your pace and makes sure you understand the material during lecture. Took Math 3A and 3B with her, would definitely recommend you take a class with her.

Great professor. Class is fair game, and she's always willing to work with you.

After taking more math courses in UCSB, I can say that Pfaff is probably the best math professor you can expect to get. She explains the solution clearly and is always willing to help. Her lectures are so good that even I had 3b at 8am I didn't miss any of them. Understanding her notes can at least help you get a B.

Pfaff was an excellent professor. She presented the material clearly, and her lectures were easy to follow. Her class for Math 8 was straightforward and covered all of the important material, and her exams accurately tested for understanding. The homework was helpful. She was kind of difficult at times, but it didn't interfere with her teaching.

her lectures can be lengthy and confusing but if you go to office hours she is really nice and will work through anything you are having trouble with.

Professor Pfaff is an amazing math professor who cares about her students' success. In lecture, she gives many examples and constantly asks if we have ?'s. She uses colored chalk which helped me at least keep my notes organized and see step by step how to solve a problem. She gives out a lot of hw, but she also offers a lot of office hours.

Pfaff was always enthusiastic and had organized, clear lectures. I really got the sense that she wanted her students to succeed -- she let the final replace the midterm when everyone tanked and offered extra office hours before finals. Grading was extremely fair and balanced (5% grade boost for 90% attendance). Lots of homework, but it's helpful.

Ignore the poor reviews that make Professor Pfaff out to be difficult. As long as you have a good algebraic and trig foundation, and actually do all the homework (What a thought!), you will pass. Professor Pfaff gives participation points that boost your grade by half and even allowed the final to replace the midterm score. Would take again!

Very friendly, excited, and professional attitude. You can tell Prof. Pfaff loves the material she is teaching, which is really nice. Classes are short, so sometimes a lot is squeezed in, but it was handled well. Homework is awesome and challenging.

I like the use of color on the board. The homework was sometimes difficult to deal with entering the exact answer, and was very sensitive to small mistakes while providing no feedback. The exams were what I expected, not too easy and not too difficult.

I would not take her if you have a choice - she seems overwhelmed during class, running all over and getting chalk all over herself. She is overly concerned with the color of chalk she uses. She literally yells at students during exam time - so stressful. The material is challenging but if you do your homework you can pass. WEBWORK SUCKS THOUGH.

MATH3B . 7 Years Ago

Professor Pfaff was very eager to teach. She has an immense passion for math. She explains complex concepts very well. She cares about her students' well-beings. There's a thing about how smart she is, so we're not readily able to comprehend everything at her level. Webwork is crap. It doesn't provide solutions.

Professor Pfaff wasn't my favorite professor, but her class is fair. Her teaching style can be hard to grasp and she gives lengthy homework that really sucks, but her tests aren't awful. Pop quizzes happen at least once a week, so show up to lecture. Definitely use CLAS and don't skip section, I ended up learning most of Math 3B from my TA.

She always made sure we understood what she was saying, and was able to explain difficult problems. She would offer more office hours and was always willing to answer questions. She was always respectful towards students and was fair in grading. The course was difficult but it would get easier with practice. She would use different-colored chalk.

Professor Pfaff invests so much time into the course. She truly cares about us and that is something I have never experienced as a student here at UCSB.

Professor Pfaff is the best math instructor I have ever met in my life. Her lecture is really straightforward and clear. I only need to review my lecture notes every time before test to understand what we went through, which saves a lot of time for me. Additionally, she is so dedicated and helpful to her students-she holds so many offices hours.

Math 3B with Pfaff was comparably much more difficult than other profs (especially Tener... I saw their midterms...) Catherine genuinely wants her students to succeed, and is not a terrible professor. However, her grading scale is more rigorous than other professors, her exams (subjectively) appear more difficult, and she gives pop quizzes often.

Very organized lecture. She plans out the lecture on paper and copies it on the chalkboard with color coding. Everything she covers is on the exam. HW is challenging but hard questions doesn't show up on the tests. Pop quizzes can be excessive but they are easy 1-2 questions that you can get free points. Gives out a lot of office hours for help.
