Narang is undoubtedly one of the best polisci professors at UCSB. Very clear grading rubric and straightforward lectures while making international relations fascinating.
There is a lot of reading, typically 2 chapters from the textbook every week. The course is graded based on the midterm and final papers, and usually one other smaller assignment in the section. Narang's lectures are interesting and he is a very good lecturer. You can get by not doing all the work, but it is a waste not to.
This class is super interesting but also quite heavy on the reading. Be prepared to spend a decent amount of time on this class to get a good grade/stay engaged. Lectures are optional but definitely helpful and the day-to-day difficulty depends on your TA (each TA chooses how to grade section: paper, quizzes, short responses, etc.)
I have taken multiple classes with Professor Narang and I can safely say his nuclear security course is his best course. Your grade consists of attendance/participation, midterm paper, and a final paper. Guest lecturers from D.C. and respected professors from the field. Best course in the department by far. Highly recommend taking his course.
He's a great lecturer, and the class is super interesting if you're a poli sci major. But be prepared to read. You need to read the textbook, memorize 80-ish terms and their definitions, and how they are significant/relate to each other. You can get away with not attending class, but it's a waste to miss them.
Professor Narang is an incredible human. There was a decent amount of reading and heavy memorization of terms (use flashcards!. He is insightful and intentional, but not always accessible because he is so busy. The course is graded entirely by the TA according to his rubric, so it's important to communicate well with your TA. Take this class!!! <33
He's a really charismatic and smart individual and it shows in his lectures. The midterm/final formats were super straightforward but the difficulty of those exams depended on his word selection for sure. Not a hard class by any means if you're not good with memorization you might need to work on that to excel on the exams
Narang is arguably one of the coolest professors at UCSB. He makes really dry information that has to be thrown at you interesting. To do well you have to memorize a lot of terms for the midterm and the final. He's a really good lecturer and I would definitely take a class with him again
This was my absolute favorite class in 4 years at UCSB. The class invited in a bunch of foreign policy experts that Professor Narang worked with in the Pentagon and Washington DC to talk about nuclear weapons. Also, Narang is amazing. He's really nice and caring. I would take the course again in a heartbeat.
Great class. The lectures are interesting, and he posts everything online to study. Completely agree about office hours. He is really nice and he gives great advice. Would definitely take another class with him.
Narang is one of the most interesting and fair professors I've had at UCSB. If you show up to lecture and do the readings, a goof grade is very attainable; just requires a lot of memorization. Great class and great professor, I would definitely take another class from him again.
Could not recommend Narang more. Inspirational, funny, and very fair. UCSB is very lucky to have him!!
Asks you to read 2 chapters (80 pages) from the book each week. It's not necessary to read both the textbook and go to class. His lectures are exactly the same as the book. I wouldn't take this class again because his tests consisted of only a few questions but the study guide had you memorize 80-100 terms (definitions + examples)
Narang was a great professor, made lectures super engaging and really dove into the otherwise dry textbook readings! Difficult grading on paper assignments, but super straightforward. Possible to do really well if you put the work in!
Overall, Neil was a really awesome professor who seemed genuinely passionate about the course's material. He also seemed a little inaccessible outside of class, probably bc he is pretty busy but i think he really cares about his students and made sure that we understood the important points. Pop quizzes weren't too tricky if you did the reading.
Narang is the boy! Best Political Science Professor I have taken a class with at UCSB. His class is a bit tough but it isnt impossible to do well. The quarter I took his class, it was at 8 AM which sucked but he tried his best to make the class engaging.
This is a great class. I was undeclared before taking it, but then switched to Political Science afterwards. Professor Narang will make you want to study international relations. He's really engaging and gets you excited to come to class (even at 8am). He can be a bit intimidating in lecture, but he's really approachable in office hours. Highly rec
An empiricist and an academic at heart, Narang's lectures are informative and articulate. He's a fantastic professor and a great guy: it's very clear he cares about his students and genuinely wants us all to succeed in his class and life.
The first day I had his class I knew right away this was going to be one of my favorite professors. Intellectually stimulating class discussion and his tonality reflects his passion for political science. I am more than happy that I chose to take this class with Professor Narang. Neil is one of the boys.
The class itself was fairly interesting but Narang made lectures so much more engaging. Very personable and down to earth, one of the coolest professors I've had so far. Lectures are somewhat repetitive of the textbook, but I can guarantee you at least a B if you keep up with the readings. A take home essay and IDs for the midterm and final.
Great professor. Funny, smart, charming. Lectures are informative and fun even though it was very much repetition of the textbook. Loved the class and now look to see what he's teaching every quarter. He's young and approachable and honestly makes you want to go to lecture (not even just for his good looks).
Professor Narang is my favorite professor here at UCSB. He's honestly so hilarious and teaches the material in a way that makes you want to listen. His tests are a little unrelated to the lecture, considering it's one take-home essay and all ID's. Your grade depends a lot more on who your T.A. is though! Also he's a cutie.
Although somewhat new to teaching, he is super passionate and engages the class which makes the material more enjoyable. Despite saying you won't pass if you don't read, most of his lectures correlate directly with the book so as long as you pay attention you will be fine.
OK - super cute young professor who is totally hilarious in lecture. You don't need to go to lectures if you do the readings, but still worth attending to hear him explain things. Completely agree with the comments here on office hours: he's really nice and approachable and he gives great advice. Overall, the best class I've had so far at UCSB.
