CHEM109A . Gainer M J 10 Years Ago

Means well, but god is he awful at teaching. Just feels like he is walking through reactions for himself, and happens to be saying his work out loud in front of a couple hundred people. There is no framing or building up to concepts, just a constant blur of lines and arrows. Lecture is useless except for clicker points.

Gainer is a wonderful lecturer, and is very passionate about chemistry. He is extremely thorough and will take time to answer questions in class. What I believe people fail to understand is that they are enrolled in an upper division chemistry course. Work outside of class is crucial however Gainer is there to clarify, for that he is awesome.

Gainer is a good lecturer - he actually lectures! He is interested in not only teaching the material, but also making sure students understand it. You need to read the book and go to class for iClicker and notes (no powerpoints). His tests are really difficult, but you get extra points from homework and iClicker, so overall it's not too bad!

CHEM109A . Gainer M J 10 Years Ago

He's enthusiastic about teaching but he's unclear sometimes, and once you're lost you don't know what's going on for the rest of lecture. He doesn't use powerpoint slides, everything is on the chalkboard which made note taking hard. Also, tests were a lot harder than what was taught in the textbook and lecture.

Gainer is a really nice guy. He wants his students to do well and is really approachable. His tests were a bit difficult but if you did book problems and read the book you would be fine! Go to class!! You get participation points for using your iClicker.

Dr. Gainer is a new professor and it shows. That being said, he cares about his students and his tests are predictable. Just read Bruice's text and you will be fine. REALLY read the text and do the problems though. That's the only way you will do well.

CHEM6AL . Gainer M J 10 Years Ago

Has interest in students doing well and is nice but he is new and inexperienced so his quizzes are difficult and cover material taught in the same lecture. The best way to learn is to read the textbook.

Good professor. Genuinely cares about the students and is more approachable and easy-going than Bruice. Gives more difficult exams than Bruice. Reading the book is IMPERATIVE to doing well in the class.

He gets his lecture material right out of the book and his tests are NOT HARD IF YOU STUDY. His grading is fair and basically gives a free 17% of your grade an A with homework and clicker points. Do the book problems, actually do the homework, and you'll get a good grade.

One of the worst lecturers I've ever witnessed. Quizes especially toward the latter half of the course see very low averages and the tests are written poorly. The Labs themselves were not bad as long as you have a good TA.

Gainer is a chill and approachable guy--I went to office hours just once but should have probably went more. The labs themselves are straight forward and simple, but quizzes were difficult and midterms were okay. Definitely read the associated text (both Mohrig and Bruice) to do well on exams. Overall not a bad class.

CHEM109A . Gainer M J 10 Years Ago

He is a nice guy but terrible professor. His tests are unbelievably hard that they are almost a joke. He teaches as if he is teaching a grad school class, not an undergrad class.

I feel bad for the guy because it's his first year. You can tell he really wants to teach well but is just inexperienced. He stands in front of the board during lecture so it's hard to read anything and his tests and quizzes are harder than the material taught. The textbook is the only way to get through this class.

CHEM6AL . Gainer M J 10 Years Ago

Nice guy, but his inexperience in teaching shows. Quizzes were difficult and covered material taught in the same lecture, which was very frustrating. Lectures were thoroughly confusing, but if you read the book you will be fine. I expect Gainer will get better with time because he is a nice guy and you can tell he genuinely cares about his students

Gainer is a good professor; seems to care about students and has a thorough understanding of the material. Lectures can be very unclear if you have not read the textbook beforehand. There is iClicker, so attendance is mandatory.

Gainer is a good professor to take ochem with. While he is new and is shows in the clarity of his lectures, they are not hard to understand if you read the book. From my observations he's a better pick than Bruice who rushes through material. Gainer legitimately cares and is interested in doing a good job teaching us the material.

Professor Gainer seems very interested in the course he is teaching yet his lectures are extremely confusing and not helpful. The tests are also very difficult and not what one would expect after preparing for so much.
