Caring professor with great lectures. This course is meant to weed out students, and it's undoubtedly good at doing so. However, Joseph tries his best to help students out and give them hints on how to do well on the upcoming midterm/final. That being said, the tests are very difficult, especially for students with no college level stem experience
Chem 1A is a hard course, regardless of who you have. However, Joseph did a pretty good job teaching the difficult concepts in the easiest way possible. What sucks in this class is that each question in the three exams is weighted very heavily. If you miss 2/20 questions on a test, you're already at a B+. This has a big impact on your final grade.
Amazing professor, clear lectures and cares a lot about the students. Grades all the exams super fast and gives lots of feedback. This class is very tough, but he does his best to help his students succeed. This is a weeder course, don't be down if the first time doesn't work out! Do the book problems and study more than a week before the exam!
The tests or super hard, and even if you took AP classes for this class, don't even think about skipping the practice problems. Lectures are really good, he will make you understand the material better, but the tests are a very big drawback.
obviously this is a rly hard class and ngl the tests are really hard but the class is curved which helps. i thought joseph did a really good job of explaining things just make sure to also put in the hours studying outside of class and you should pass especially because your lowest midterm grade gets replaced by your final if you do better :)
Tests are extremely difficult. I studied for hours upon hours and still failed both midterms extremely bad.
really difficult tests, exams are nothing like the practice exams
I had him for the entire Gen Chem series and LOVED him. I only got a bad grade due to my own lack of study habits, but he has very informational lectures, is super accessible and accommodating outside of class, and cares about his students' success. I guarantee negative reviews are by people who just struggled with the content/ didn't study.
Tough grader, I will never ever take this class again.
the GOAT of gen chem. super hard classes in general but josephs lectures are very helpful and easy to follow. he has lectures posted online which is helpful. work through all the book problems and practice problems until you understand them inside and out. his office hours are super helpful and accessible
Hes a decent teacher. Do not slack off on ALEKS. CLAS was extremely helpful for understanding the material, cant recommend it enough. I failed this course due to falling behind on homework, but i did feel confident on understanding the concepts. (And I did much better retaking it!)
Very clear and straightforward. Lectures and practice tests are available online.
Lectures and practice tests are available online. He is very clear and straightforward with the course content and grading. Would recommend you take him. 1B is difficult though, make sure to do practice problems.
Professor Joseph is very kind and seems to really care about his students. However, his tests are significantly harder than some of the other professors in the chem department, like Price. If you even hope to pass his class you 100% have to do the book problems and all of the Aleks. The exams are not that similar to the practice exams.
I did all the recommended book probs and practice tests and scored high on midterms but performed significantly worse on the final. I got A grades in CHEM 1AB though, so I would say his exams vary too much. Fortunately, people enjoy how animated he is as a professor like in his intros. Additionally, his lecture quality is not bad, so go to class!
I had Joseph for the whole gen chem series and I personally loved him. Lectures are incredibly important so make sure you watch the videos or attend class. The class is hard but if you put in the work, you will be okay. I came in having barely any knowledge of chem and passed each time with a B and 1C with a B+. Good luck!
I think he is an all round good professor to take Chem with as his tests and lectures are very straightforwards. The unfortunate thing is that the final is the most important thing for your grade. It sucked how since the 1st midterm average was so high, he had to make the next 2 tests extra hard to bring the average down. Don't procrastinate.
If you are taking gen chem. TAKE JOSEPH. His tests are taken from book problems and he gives plenty of practice test. He does not try and trick you on the test, as long as you put in the work to study you'll be fine. He posts lectures that are really helpful and clear. Definitely the best gen chem professor.
Crisjoe is definitely one of the best chem professors out there. The class itself is hard, but his organized lectures and clear instructions of paying attention to the book for tests are very helpful, and he cares that his students succeed. There is a curve on the class as a whole, but not on individual tests. Recommend taking him for gen chem!
1B is just a difficult class in general, but joseph tried to make the class as easy as possible. Really only based on ALEKs and the midterms, DO THE BOOK PROBLEMS!! There are a lot that he recommends to do, but if you dont do them, the tests will be impossible. The book problems are a great indicator to see what you really need to study
This class is brutal, compared to other standard 1st year stem classes (Math, phys, etc..) this class is more like 8 units of work not 3. There is a ton of material to cover, and the exams are very hard. However, the professor is very upfront about this, and does his best to help everyone despite the large class size.
Chem is a difficult class, but Crisjoe is clear about what he expects on the midterms and final. He provides practice problems and practice exams, and he uses those question formats on the tests. He also has a youtube channel with all of his lectures. Overall a great professor!
My favorite chem professor!! Really thorough and clear lectures, very clear what will be on the exam. Make sure to do all the book problems, take notes and go through the slides/videos if you miss class. He's a really kind person and is pretty funny too! Gen chem is hard but it's obvious he wants you to succeed :))
I had this professor for chem 1b during winter quarter 2023. His tests are unnecessarily difficult and I found his explanation of the material to be too complicated & hard to understand. Would recommend to take this class with another professor. Did not pass the class and am currently retaking with another professor.
