Joseph is the GOAT. He's def the best chem lecturer, I'd watch his recorded lectures on yt even if you're not in his class. Ppl are rating him badly bc the course is hard, but he teaches it very well. Only problem is tests are mc only and 17 questions (so 2 wrong drops you to a B) but he replaces lowest midterm w/ final. DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS!!!
This professor taught the material in a clear and concise matter, and provided plenty of study materials. However, beware of asking questions in class, you will likely receive a condescending response. The tests are extremely short (17ish Qs) which leaves little room for error. Don't waste all your energy doing ALEKs for hours on end.
Professor Joseph was Okay. He explained concepts thoroughly. With that said you have to dedicate a lot of time to his class because the course load is heavy. You have a lot of *optional book problems and readings to do every week. His exams are VERY DIFFICULT too so please make sure you understand every concept well. (Good Teacher/Hard Exams)
Joseph was a great professor and had fantastic lectures. Practice problems are a must if you want to succeed; make sure you understand how to do all practice problems. Understand the core concepts of the course. Joseph also posted past exams which are a great method to practice. He's a very nice guy and is always open to help during office hours.
Professor Joseph is a good and energetic professor, however the class is hard. The exams are difficult, so put effort into doing all his recommended problems.
Prof. Joseph has a clear passion for chemistry - lectures are energetic and engaging, occasionally with cool demonstrations. Previous chem knowledge will not carry you through the course, as it quickly moves past any high school chemistry content. Exams are difficult but fair. The class averages were consistently around 66% for each exam and final.
Considering how INCREDIBLY hard this class is and how little lecture time he has, Joseph does a great job and is amazing at explaining things. He really wants you to succeed. I've always considered myself decently smart but this class DEFEATED me. I dedicated an infinite amount of hours to this class. DO EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. OF THE BOOK PROBLEMS!!!
Honestly this class is just insanely hard no matter the professor... however to succeed in his class do the reading (seriously) and do all the book problems. Also, its super important to do ALL PRACTICE EXAMS and make sure to use your resources wisely like CLAS or private tutoring. Also trust the curve, i genuinely thought i wouldn't pass but did.
- Lectures seemed comprehendible but the tests were much harder - Review questions and questions in lectures seemed easy but the questions on the test were much harder - I felt there was barely a curve -Funny and nice -Do not recommend if you're not passionate about science/going into a STEM major/ if you're only doing this for your requirements.
Tests are ridiculously hard compared to other gen chem professors BUT I do feel he is a good lecturer and prepares you the best. Prepare to suffer
If you do the Aleks (don't just chatgpt), do the book problems (Ik everyone says it, but he literally pulls questions and puts them on tests. Do them.), go to lecture (iclicker), and study hard, you'll do well. Joseph is a great teacher and wants you to succeed, but you have to put the work in too. Exams make up most of your grade so be careful.
He curved the overall class not exams. Although one of the hardest intro classes Joseph does a great job explaining the concepts all slides are online though there is iclicker. Definitely do the optional book problems because he just changes the numbers. Completely passable class just dont wait till last minute
He is very straightforward in what to do to prep for exams and succeed in his class. Do the book problems he recommends, and the aleks. And be sure to go to office hours with the TA's, they are less busy then he is. He even gives practice exams for the midterms and finals that look somewhat similar to what you can expect on the actual exam.
Very conflicted. He's a pretty chill guy and he explains well. There's just not much that impacts your grade apart from the midterms and final. Course material is obviously not easy but I'd say he tried his best to make it digestible. If you lock in and try you can definitely do well. I unfortunately chose not to. Do ALEKS, sections, book probs.
Easily the best chem teacher. Lectures are engaging but fast. There's videos posted to help you catch up if you fall behind. I felt supported and expectations were so clear. Do practice tests and book problems and you'll succeed.
Coming from a history of excelling in AP STEM courses in high school I can say with confidence this course has thoroughly humbled me. This course has single handedly shaved years off my life from the amount of stress it's put me under. It has made me rethink my pursuit of medicine. You must devote your life to the textbook to succeed. HOURS OF BOOK
Goat of chem.
Dr. Joseph is an amazing professor who is so passionate about chemistry. Online homework does not help at all, the only things that actually helps for the exams are the book problems (SO many of them) as well as just attending the lectures. Great professor, just make sure that you put the work in.
This class is a nightmare. The homework is so time consuming and is nothing like the tests so to do well, you have to do a lot of book problems on top of the normal homework. This is true for all 1A classes though, so be prepared for that no matter the professor. That being said, if you have to take this class, Joseph is probably your best bet.
Let me begin by saying, "Its on the money!" This course consumed my thoughts, so much so that he appeared in my dreams. This course was a nightmare but I could not have asked for a better professor to guide me. Anyway, very difficult tests (he likes to trick) so get ready to get humbled. Amazingly clear lectures! 2/10 experience, 10/10 professor.
Joseph is a great professor, just very difficult content. Lots of homework and you absolutely have to do the book problems (and understand them!!!) to succeed on the tests. Lectures contain a lot of content and tests are definitely hard, but Joseph is very passionate about chemistry and does a decent job at breaking down the content in lecture.
Love crisjoe but chem 1b is so bad. You can tell he really loves chem and loves teaching. He's super easy to talk to and doesn't make you feel dumb for not understanding something. He loves to take old test questions and just change the numbers slightly so the practice tests really help. Final isn't too bad either
Good teacher, but the class takes up a lot of time and the problems can be difficult so review the textbook and do practice problems
Crisjoe is an excellent lecturer who explains concepts clearly. His tests are challenging, so stay on top of the recommended textbook problems and practice exams. Unstuckstudy AI was a lifesaver for preparing - highly recommend combining it with the other study tips.
