This class is all memorization and its awful. You would think a class about dinosaurs would be fun but it is not at all. He will try to tell you that its not about memorization and rather about logic and understanding phylogenetic trees but really it is memorization of hard to pronounce dinosaur parts and time periods.
Luna is the absolute boy. Super passionate about what he's teaching and a very cool guy. If you're taking an earth class and see luna as the professor, you would be doing yourself a disservice to not take his class. Also memorize your cladograms ;-)
Don't take if you're looking to do minimal work and expect anything above a B. AMAZING lectures with an even more engaging professor. The class is A LOT of memorization but it's not easy as it is about evolution and you need to know each link. My favorite class this quarter, he combines science and philosophy- must take if you can! Go to class!!!!
Luna is one of the best professors Ive had at UCSB. I took the class as a GE and ended up learning a lot more than I anticipated. The content is hard to remember, so start studying the cladograms ahead of time if you want to do well on his tests. Luna is always eager to help you understand the material too since he knows it can be challenging.
Luna is incredibly charismatic and passionate about his field of study. I will carry the lessons I learned from this class into the rest of my life. It's the best class I have taken at UCSB and I am sad he is leaving otherwise I would have taken more classes with him.
Dan is so dreamy, especially when in lecture mode, but the class is fairly challenging, as far as content material. Very heavy on memorization and if it wasn't for the labs, I would have failed. DO NOT take as a GE.
Dan is an amazing lecturer! Im genuinely sad that hes leaving UCSB this summer. His lectures are posted and exactly whats on the exam. His lectures is very straightforward and you can tell they he cares about the material and his students! There are Iclicker questions but they arent worth much. Took Earth 18(P/Np), 20, and 7. P and both A+.
Luna is a great and passionate professor that you can tell genuinely cares about his area of study. His passion and dry humor during lectures makes them on the more interesting side of lectures provided at UCSB. Overall he's a great guy and has changed my outlook on science and how we should treat our planet!
Luna is probably my favorite professor I've ever had in my few years of school, and I only had him for this one class. I left the class with a not just a lot of cool knowledge but a changed perspective on the fragility of life. While some disagree, I found his lectures fascinating, and at the end of the year, realized I was sad the class was over.
The lectures for this class are unbearable. It's very boring and the professor is VERY politically biased which makes you wonder whether you accidentally signed up for a politics class instead. It's a heavy science based class. Stay away if you are not interested in heavy memorization.
Dr. Luna has been by far the best professor I have ever had. Challenging, but worth all of the effort. His class changed my perspective on life. Dr. Luna is the epitome of a terrific professor and person: passionate, knowledgeable, thought provoking, and incredibly compassionate. If you ever have the chance to learn from him, TAKE IT!!
The class is really easy as long as you show up to class, take notes, and listen to lecture. There is homework but it's nothing too hard. The exams are straight forward and he's not trying to trick you. Professor Luna is hilarious and an amazing teacher. He truly wants students to learn and I hope to take another class from him in the future.
I didn't care much about evolution before this but he made me love it. Don't take if you're looking for a class that you don't need to work for - easy labs and weekly homework, the only hard part is that you actually need to study for the exams. GO TO CLASS & LEARN the cladograms (its not hard). Take if looking to learn something.
One of the best profs here at UCSB. Hands down. Only discusses practical knowledge worth knowing which is a nice refresher compared to most other classes. Very cool guy, personable, friendly, and highly recommend.
I really enjoyed Professor Luna's class. After taking Earth 20 I was left very confused but he has been able to explain everything very clearly so that anyone can understand. He doesn't make you purchase the book and there is one group project at the end of the quarter! Other than that the midterm and final weren't too bad (if you studied).
Daniel Luna is the best professor I have taken. He is so passionate and knowledgeable and his class was genuinely amazing. It led to me switching my major to bio, & I was planning on majoring in a soc. I ended up taking another class by him, and it was amazing, educational, and completely changed my worldview. Take Professor Luna if you ever can!!
At first I thought this was a "difficult" professor, but now looking back I realize how much I should have appreciated his system of teaching/learning. The lectures are very clear and concise; they're well organized and include participation (10% of your grade) through iClickers. It's a huge course but still gives lots of options for help.
Dan the Dino Man is one of the best professors I've had at UCSB. His lectures are informative and engaging, and he makes what could be a dry topic incredibly interesting (his last lecture made me question my life path and consider becoming an earth science major). He makes lecture fun, and he clearly wants his students to succeed. We stan Dan.
Sarcastic and enthusiastic, Dan's pretty great. To be fair, he does expect his students to be willing to put the work in, so it's not a class to completely slack off in. I didn't use the textbook at all, but I definitely studied hard for the midterm/final and got A's. The labs are really cool (you look at fossils!). Good class!
Luna is very into his work, and his passion is clearly evident, which is the mark of a good professor. Dinos is NOT an easy A, with weekly homework and easy labs, you MUST pay attention in lectures, memorize cladograms, and work hard for the midterm and final. It's straightforward if you put in the work, and you may get something out of the class!
Best professor on campus. His class was the only one I could actually pay attention to. Very organized, clear, and considerate. Homework is short and straightforward. His humor and passion for the subject keeps the class interesting. I don't like science but I still enjoyed this class a lot. I can't recommend this class enough!!
Dan is an amazingly lecturer and a fascinating, passionate, knowledgable human being. He made this class accessible to non-STEM majors. All of the info I learned this past quarter I can apply to the world around me, and I also appreciate his desire to educate and inspire this generation to be more politically active! 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 project
He will immediately tell you they only called it dinosaurs so you sign up - it's introduction to palaeontology. Harder than expected but overall a good class. Memorise the cladograms for the midterm and final.
Dan is the best lecturer I've had and I'm in my last year at UCSB. If you want to learn a lot take this course! Definitely requires studying to do well on exams, but labs and hw should be easy if you ask questions. The last lecture was seriously one of the best speeches I've ever heard in person.
