I really liked prof hoelle! he was really funny and engaging. lectures were a little boring but not bad. sections were mandatory and lecture occasionally had iclickers. There's two short papers but your grade really depends on who ur TA is. midterm was in person but the final was online and was way too long for the amount of time we were given.
Lectures could get boring but overall it was a pretty chill class. Paper guidelines were vague and your grade just depended on your TA. Its a good ge requirement.
attend lectures as material in class and the readings are whats on the test. funny lectures but sometimes boring material
Professor Hoelle is super nice and funny! The 2 essays are super easy especially if you have a good TA. The tests were honestly really hard but I managed to pull through with B's on both of them by studying the night before. No curve or negotiating your grade at the end of quarter. Class isn't that bad but I wouldn't take it again.
One of my favorite professors here. Really interesting guy with funny and engaging lectures. I would recommend this course to any of my friends. Relatively easy GE, 2 papers and 2 exams that weren't cumulative. Grading really depends on your TA but overall, the grading criteria was pretty straight forward.
I really enjoyed Hoelle, he's probably the funniest professor I've had so far. Really enjoyed him as a person. However... lectures could get boring. Essays were also very strange, weirdly graded, and the word count was super limited so it was hard to get your point across/meet all the criteria. I'd recommend this class, pretty easy GE!
prof was cool, just didn't care for the papers--word limit was too low and not sufficient amount to actually make your point. sections felt pointless and unnecessary. it wasn't a hard class, but if anthro isnt your thing it gets pretty boring. exams were so specific and had less than an hour to do them so kinda crazy
Did this class as a GE, definitely doable. Two papers, and in person midterm and online final. He claims the questions are general, but the questions were literally asking for exact answers from exact lectures and iclicker questions. There is an iclicker for attendance in every lecture, but only need to do a certain amount of them. Funny guy though.
funny dude...sunshine and rainbows until the the midterm...then the final. quote on quote if you attend the lectures and do the readings your totally fine for the tests. WRONG! the final was exact references to specific, niche lectures and work. professor hoelle is a G, just like why was it so difficult????
Easy class
Complex topics made simple through his monotone yet humoristic style of lecturing. Not much to be graded on but as long as you attend lectures, midterm and final should be a breeze. Cell phone policy no longer applies. He does talk about his research in Brazil A LOT though, it's his way of connecting concepts so I won't complain. Overall great.
Funny, lectures sometimes boring and amusing, 2 essays and 2 exams make up the grade with some extra credit assignments. Deeply cares for his field of anthropology and teaching it in a funny way with surveys, movies, lectures, and iClickers. We finally completed the legendary McRib at the end of class with fun prizes for participating students.
He is funny and although lectures can be a bit boring at times, is a great dude and teaches the class well. Only 2 essays and 2 exams, but definitely need to go to lectures for iclickers. I liked how the light reflected off his bald head.
I love Professor Hoelle!!! Not only is he one of the funniest professors I've ever had, he is super fair and his class is really interesting. Very basic college course in terms of difficulty and expectations. I would 100% take this class or any class with Hoelle again, he's really chill and so funny!
Very stiff policy on attendance as both lecture and section are mandatory. Combined with very boring, monotone lectures where he talks about his own research a lot. You are recommended to purchase a textbook that he has written in addition to outside readings. Takes a fascinating subject and makes it arduously boring. Seems very full of himself.
Awesome course and material, you can tell he cares deeply about the subject matter and weaves his own research with the course topic in a super cool way. Weekly discussions, couple quizzes, a midterm and a final that are a breeze if you attend lecture and do the assigned readings. Can't recommend this course enough.
Professor Hoelle is a treat. You can tell he genuinely cares about his research and his students. His class is relatively easy but honestly fun. We watched movies relating to the Amazon. Reading is important as he uses the readings in the midterm and final. I highly recommend taking this class
There were no clear guidelines or rubric for the 2 papers and your grade basically depended on how good and nice your ta is. The exams were online but were questionable since it involved applications of concepts and sometimes there were multiple correct answers even tho he said only one is right. One of the worst profs at UCSB. He rambled a lot
Professor Hoelle was probably one of the best professors I have had here at UCSB. He is very caring and there is two papers for the class, but its only 750 words and the topic is very interesting and fun. Office hours were really helpful for the papers and made them easy. Other than that there is a bit of reading but never did them and still passed
Prof is chill. TA was the #1 opp. Ridiculous grader, bad instructor, no rubrics/references. Didn't attend lectures, ran through the slides the night before and got ~89% average on the exams. Scraped by with an A. Rating this as a 5/5 difficulty just because of how ridiculous the paper grading was in the context of what this class is. Like bro..
Two papers with very vague guidelines that the TA didn't really seem to know much about. Lectures are boring and SO disorganized. He is nice and funny though. Exams were both online and were an 7/10 difficulty. But I still survived w/ an A. Also talk a lot in section or else you will get docked 10% in participation for some reason.
There were only 2 papers and a midterm and final but not many graded things. The criteria was confusing for the papers, and the TAs didn't elaborate on them or the given grades. The lecture was either really interesting or really boring. Both the midterm and final were both multiple-choice.
He's nice and funny but this class is a lot of work for a GE. We had 2 papers that were graded too harshly by TA's and there was no comments to improve. Lectures were boring. And section participation is graded too harshly. I showed up to 9/10 sections but I got a 50% on section grade because I barely spoke. Wouldn't take this class again
Hoelle is a scattered, mid-tier professor. His lectures make little sense, and rarely educate you on the real topic. He loves to talk about himself and his own research, even when irrelevant. He wasn't horrible, wasn't great either. Boring class topics, n be prepared to read. TA's don't really care either. Overall, 4/10. Wouldn't take again.
