I really liked prof hoelle! he was really funny and engaging. lectures were a little boring but not bad. sections were mandatory and lecture occasionally had iclickers. There's two short papers but your grade really depends on who ur TA is. midterm was in person but the final was online and was way too long for the amount of time we were given.

Lectures could get boring but overall it was a pretty chill class. Paper guidelines were vague and your grade just depended on your TA. Its a good ge requirement.

Professor Hoelle is super nice and funny! The 2 essays are super easy especially if you have a good TA. The tests were honestly really hard but I managed to pull through with B's on both of them by studying the night before. No curve or negotiating your grade at the end of quarter. Class isn't that bad but I wouldn't take it again.

One of my favorite professors here. Really interesting guy with funny and engaging lectures. I would recommend this course to any of my friends. Relatively easy GE, 2 papers and 2 exams that weren't cumulative. Grading really depends on your TA but overall, the grading criteria was pretty straight forward.

I really enjoyed Hoelle, he's probably the funniest professor I've had so far. Really enjoyed him as a person. However... lectures could get boring. Essays were also very strange, weirdly graded, and the word count was super limited so it was hard to get your point across/meet all the criteria. I'd recommend this class, pretty easy GE!

prof was cool, just didn't care for the papers--word limit was too low and not sufficient amount to actually make your point. sections felt pointless and unnecessary. it wasn't a hard class, but if anthro isnt your thing it gets pretty boring. exams were so specific and had less than an hour to do them so kinda crazy

Did this class as a GE, definitely doable. Two papers, and in person midterm and online final. He claims the questions are general, but the questions were literally asking for exact answers from exact lectures and iclicker questions.There is an iclicker for attendance in every lecture, but only need to do a certain amount of them. Funny guy though.

funny dude...sunshine and rainbows until the the midterm...then the final. quote on quote if you attend the lectures and do the readings your totally fine for the tests. WRONG! the final was exact references to specific, niche lectures and work. professor hoelle is a G, just like why was it so difficult????

Easy class

Complex topics made simple through his monotone yet humoristic style of lecturing. Not much to be graded on but as long as you attend lectures, midterm and final should be a breeze. Cell phone policy no longer applies. He does talk about his research in Brazil A LOT though, it's his way of connecting concepts so I won't complain. Overall great.

Funny, lectures sometimes boring and amusing, 2 essays and 2 exams make up the grade with some extra credit assignments. Deeply cares for his field of anthropology and teaching it in a funny way with surveys, movies, lectures, and iClickers. We finally completed the legendary McRib at the end of class with fun prizes for participating students.
