One of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. He's really passionate and knowledge about the material. Reading is helpful but not really need, but lecture definitely is. Two tests: midterm and final. Movies are great!
His lectures are definitely useless in relation to the course. The only reason I received the grade I did was because I missed ONE assignment which was a bit unfair considering there was a possibility to make up for it. He is not very open minded to others' views on the movies, either.
One of the worst profs I've taken. He has absolutely no consideration for students' time; not to mention, his lectures are like a non-stop assault with the amount he talks. The class is so extremely boring if you're able to stay awake I commend you.
His lectures are packed with information. Be prepared to take a lot of notes throughout the course. He lectures on the all the material inside the readings so I found the books to useless. He is a good professor and one of the only ones who truly cares about his students. He is funny too!
Best class I have ever taken at UCSB! Professor Hecht doesn't talk much since most of the lectures are given by various Vietnam vets, but it is all amazing. Extremely emotional class, and the reading is very interesting although you don't really have to do all of it, but you should!
Prof. Hecht is such a joy to listen to. He is very passionate about what he teaches and that definitely comes through as you listen to him. I really enjoyed taking his class, it's fairly easy too. I believe there is only one test, a final, and he gives you the prompt ahead of time. Just make sure your essay and your thoughts are organized. Enjoy!
amazing
most amazing teacher and person! you will not regret taking a class from him. he is clear and you definitely know what it is you should know for the test.
amazing! so funny and enthusiastic- doing all the reading (which is a lot) is never completely necessary- just find friends in class to have study groups
this class is great, one of the only classes that i wish had sections so more could be covered. his outside assignments are fun and make for a good change in scenery HUGE democrate, and loves Obama. he is really funny and likes to joke around. books can be helpful, but not mandatory, just attend lecture.
A fun guy, usually has a tangent to start off the class with, but stays on track with his lectures well enough. Passionate in what he teaches, but don't challenge his ideas too much. Final seemed too heavily weighted, but it worked for me, so eh. Show up to class, have some prior background in the material, then even without reading you'll be fine.
Religion and Journalism. This class opened my mind to religion journalism. There was ALOT of reading, 3 article write-ups, and the final was a 3 page paper. Most classes were discussions. If you didn't attend class you wouldn't get much from this class bec. we discussed what a textbook usually write out for. Hecht brought flavor to class.

Prof. Hecht has a very high opinion of himelf and it's very unclear why. His seminar was a joke - he brought very little value to the class as its leader (it was only via talking with other students that I learned anything) and even talking to him during office hours was a complete waste of time. My heart goes out to those who must deal with him.
The midterm in this class was ridiculously easy, but the final was an example of an academic torture... I needed full three hours to finish the essay question because it asked for every friggin detail that we had covered... Anyways, he is a fair grader and an easily comprehensible teacher... Don't slack, and you'll do just fine...
This guy is on a power trip. At points he has good points, but he's pushing the buttons. He self-censors materials. You cannot question his ideas, or explore others. EXTREMELY RUDE to students. Call me an idiot in his office for asking questions too often in his class.
i was very unimpressed with hecht. i took his global religion class last quarter my senior year. his course matter was blatantly skewed, ex. one week on judaism, one DAY on islam. i know you're a jew and all, but seriously, come on...a complete waste of time, learned very little if not nothing for his lectures.
This class was unlike any other. Veterans co-teach the class and it is very worthwhile and an amazing experience!
WOW this class changed my life completely, never will i forget the films we saw about the Shoah. This class was amazing, never will i forget about this class.
I keep taking classes with this guy because I am always interested in what he is saying, always clear on what is expected of me, and always challenged in a great way. He is a great professor who chooses great content to teach, and teaches it in a way that makes you think about it even when you're not in class.
This is one of the most interesting and intellectually stimulating classes I have taken at UCSB. The material extends beyond the course into a way of thinking about humanity and the representations of religion in film. The films and readings were time intensive but worth while and the professor is as he would say "one cool cat".
Loved the class, it was one of the best classes I took at UCSB. He knew his stuff, and made it a great class--we wrote our own poetry and talked. He knew all of our names, and kept in touch after the class finished. He's just a great professor. I had/have an intellectual crush on him!
<3 the classes but tangent must be his middle name
