Thrower was a fine teacher for biochem C. This was Thrower's first year of teaching biochem in 10 years, so I can see why things weren't so smooth. However, his tests aren't that hard and are VERY fair. The people who complain are lazy students who only wants to know material that will be on the test. Understand the problem sets and you'll be fine!
Great for genetics, 101A, but is awful with biochemistry. He constantly second guesses himself, so he appears to not even know the material well. He also seems incredibly disinterested while teaching. His class consists of throwing a ton of information, like pathways and enzyme names, for no apparent reason and no interconnecting themes. Awful.
I loved Dr. Thrower for genetics, but this class is absolutely awful and DEATHLY BORING. He sounds like he doesn't even know what he's talking about half the time. Lectures cram in way too much material, so this class involves ridiculous amounts of memorization for pathways that you won't be able to remember 2 days after the test anyway.
Thrower is an amazing professor. This class is made so simple by CLAS. I kept up with the slides and memorized the mechanisms, NOT every word. I ended up with an A+ by a long shot. You simply just need to put in about 15 hours a week. It scares me to see that people are calling thiss class hard, it's really not. Thrower is the man!
His class is not hard if you read his slide and understand what is going on. You also have to attend CLAS and do the practice exams. Other than that, the book and section are not helpful.
This class is harder than it should be. His lectures are hard to follow. His midterms and finals are insanely hard even when you study because he doesn't actually test you on the info in the book/lecture he tests on what if this or that went wrong? How should I know if you haven't taught it to me and its not in the book? Really frustrating class!
Class is pretty straightforward. MEMORIZE everything on the slides and you'll ace the class. If you still don't get it, all pictures used on the slides are noted and in the book.
class seems useless but he always tests on things he spends more time talking about, so its helpful to go to class and see which slides he spends the most time on and they'll be tested. he wants you to leave the class with enough knowledge to work in a prokaryotic genetics lab, and his test questions reflect the research aspects. hard but doable
Very boring, also an 8am class. CLAS helps make the material a lot easier. Expect to put in a lot of time in this class, as it is not an easy A. Attending class is good for extra credit I-clicker points. The curve is pretty nice too.
Dr. Thrower is very organized, knowledgable & helpful. The concepts are not particularly hard. What makes this course so difficult is the amount of (fairly dry) material you need to learn & a lot of memorization as well. Expect to put in A LOT of time. Go to CLAS. Find a way to organize all the material that works for you. NEVER get behind.
Midterms and final EXTREMELY hard. I was in CLAS which kind of saved me or else I would have been SO lost, but still was not enough. Too much info. packed in one quarter and professor was extremely boring. Go to lecture though so you can get extra info. on slides. Sections werent helpful either, just repeated stuff that would be posted online later
Really sweet, and really cares about his students. You don't need to read the book that much, unless it is to clarify something in lecture. Does iClicker but besides that, lecture was pretty unhelpful. CLAS is a must, and his is really helpful in Office hours. The second midterm requires a lot of memorization.
His material is definitely dry and because he purposefully chooses to have his classes early in the morning, it's a struggle to stay awake. Definitely go to class and do the reader problems. My issue with him is that in order to do well on the test you definitely have to go over past exams to get an idea of how to approach certain problems.
Thrower is such a great professor. I had him for 101A and I took 126A for fun. Pharmacology ROCKED. We learned about all different types of drugs and I see them on TV commercials all the time! Just a lot of memorization. But if you want to go to med school, this class is fantastic
Pretty awesome professor. Very clear dialogue, knows what he is talking about, and he is super nice. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a good bio professor.
Very nice professor, although quizzes are quite hard. Wouldn't recommend taking during summer.
Good teacher. Very monotone. Material is interesting but often very dry. Do every problem you possibly can and you're golden. Try to get Daryl Taketa for your TA, he is a great teacher and gives useful extra problems in section. Great exposure to concepts in 101B.
His teaching style is incredibly boring. I was excited to take this class, but it was so hard to listen to him at 8am and I started not going to class. You NEED to go to his class and do the reader problems to do well in this class. The TAs seem to know more than Thrower does.
He's nice as a person. But lectures are so boring. Definitely doesn't invoke any interest in the subject matter. I made the mistake of not doing CLAS. Bad choice. Tests are pretty hard and not much of a curve. A lot of memorization. Especially mutation recognitions toward the end of the class things get a little hectic so beware
He would keep finding mistakes in the tests WHILE WE WERE TAKING THE MIDTERM AND FINAL!!! so ppl would spend time on a question.. then he changes the numbers during the test... and does it again... its awful... he needs to proofread beforehand but he's too lazy to do it! very nice but awful lecturer!!!
only necessary to go for iclicker points. Just go to CLAS to learn it. the information is merely presented and not taught. but office hours are really nice. he has alot of them compared to other professors. and hes really nice. look at all his cool Carnivorous plants :)
Great professor! I did study a lot for this class, especially because it was only 6 weeks long. Not too hard if you take CLAS with Emily who's very helpful and funny. The tests were at times difficult but fair if you study.
took in summer, very fast, midterms and final are hard. even with knowing all the material, questions can be hard and confusing. nice in OH. definitely do CLAS. extra credit clicker questions which help, curved a lot
Dr. Thrower is awesome! He's a fantastic professor and really funny! His tests are difficult but that's just the nature of the subject. If you go to lecture and take CLAS you'll do fine. Definitely not an easy A.
