As long as you watch the lectures and skim over the topics in the textbook, you'll be fine. He gives you two chances to take the quizzes and whichever grade is the highest, he'll input. The discussions aren't too bad. Really easy class, especially online. There's only one paper and it's not that lengthy. Would recommend if you need it for a GE.
Weekly quizzes that are based on readings but they are pretty easy. Class graded based on the quizzes, three essays and section participation. No MIDTERM and NO FINAL. Class isn't really mandatory but they sometimes take role at the beginning of lecture; usually random times. Slides aren't posted online and he literally reads off of them.
There are weekly quizzes but he gives you 10 chances at practice quizzes beforehand. If you aren't getting at least a B on the quizzes, then you're doing something wrong. Essays instead of exams. Grade is largely based on these and section and TA interaction. Put in the work and you're basically guaranteed an A. Great way to get into global!
McCarty genuinely cares about his students. He will challenge you, but also provide the support and humor needed to excel. One of my favorite professors at UCSB.
I really enjoyed McCarty's class. When I was in his class last quarter he didn't give us the weekly quiz but we did have the weekly writing assignments which were quite overwhelming and took up most of my week. When it comes to lectures, I found him interesting, engaging, and thought-provoking
McCarty is super nice and knows what he is talking about! You do not need to go to lectures at all and you get to practice each quiz 10 times before you take the actual one and he gives all of the questions that are on the actual quizzes during the practice ones. 3 papers that are super easy. Just attend section and you're good. EASY CLASS
I thought 130 was a bit boring but the assignments were easy so I didn't mind. Weekly online quizzes based on the reading, take home papers for the MT and final. Attending lecture is not essential to passing. I hear most teachers who teach 130 make it difficult so I was glad McCarty gave us a break.
Super easy class. Weekly quizzes, 3 papers, and section participation. No final and no midterm. If you put in the effort, you will get an A in the class. I thought the lectures were fairly interesting but I wouldn't say they are mandatory to go to in order to pass the class.
No tests, weekly online quizzes (with practice quizzes too so you basically know all the answers), and 3 papers total. Don't need to do any reading or really go to lecture; he just took attendance once mid-quarter and I missed it but I did fine. Section participation is a must (depending on your TA) so just try to talk a lot. SUPER easy.
No reason to go to class except for the random attendance in the beginning. Section attendance is mandatory though. No midterm or final. Only weekly quizzes, but he gives practices before you do the graded one (super easy). Three 3-4 page papers, need to use the reader as reference but I Passed w/o ever really reading.
Fantastic professor! It's obvious that he really enjoys his job and is passionate about his subject area(s). The lectures were always very interesting. Overall, it's a pretty easy class: no midterm, no final. There are three short papers and weekly online quizzes. I definitely recommend this class and professor!
Pretty dry lectures, attendance not mandatory. Section is mandatory though because participation is part of your grade. One midterm and final, both essay format that you do at home. Weekly quizzes on the readings/lecture but theyre pretty easy. Fairly easy A but content is dry.
Dr. McCarty is one of the most entertaining and intriguing professors I've ever had. Lecture isn't mandatory, section is mandatory. What he lectures on is very interesting and he tosses in small jokes to keep lecture interesting. There are only 3 short papers and weekly quizzes (which you can practice before taking). Easy class, hard to get into.
By far one of the greatest classes that I have ever taken at UCSB! He is a very good public speaker, so it is pretty easy to follow with what he is saying. There are no midterms or final, his class consists of weekly online quizzes (not too bad) and 3 shortish evenly spread out throughout the quarter. Overall pretty easy class.
Great ideas being tossed around. The lectures are crazy informative and there is a prevalent theme of interdisciplinary tactics and multiple perspectives beings used to analyze history. Great class I would definitely take this for a global perspective and interpretation of history and politics in todays world using yesterday as evidence.
great professor! assignments to help get to grad school, i turned everything in late. got an A. class not mandatory, but he uses a lot of anecdotes which helpful. just do the assignments, and yowl get an a. excited to have him again this quarter! didn't buy the book. lol never went to class
Great professor! Just 3 short essays and weekly quizzes that are very easy. You can skip class and still do good in tid class. There is no midterm or final either!
I always look for any classes that Professor Mccarty teaches. Mccarty made Global 130 very understandable for those who do not have an economic background. His two papers were very broad, however it allowed for outside research and to analyze current events. If you go to lecture and section then you will do great. Easy A and you will learn a lot!
This class was so easy it was a joke. You didn't need to go to lecture unless they were taking attendance which they did a couple times. Three essays, no midterm or final. Get to know your TA and you'll get a good grade. The online weekly quizzes are super easy too. Didn't have to crack open the textbook either. Take for a GPA boost.
I like McCarty as a person, but his lectures are more like hour long monologues. We're lucky to get through a few slides on a good day before he jumps into the same rant on avocados and free trade and McDonalds and Jamaica and how poverty sucks. Every course he teaches is pretty similar. He has funny dad humor, but I'm not learning much. Easy A.
Great professor and very funny
The classes are easy but you learn a ton. I always look for classes to take with McCarty.
I really enjoyed this class! He makes corny jokes and has pretty interesting lectures. No midterm or final, just weekly online reading quizzes and 3 shortish essays. You should go to class, but if you miss a couple lectures you'll survive.
Professor McCarty goes on and on in lecture about how the world is a terrible place. He claims to be teaching us a revisionist global history but I felt I learned very little in the class. That being said, lecture could be entertaining and McCarty seems like a good guy. Quizzes are easy.
