As long as you watch the lectures and skim over the topics in the textbook, you'll be fine. He gives you two chances to take the quizzes and whichever grade is the highest, he'll input. The discussions aren't too bad. Really easy class, especially online. There's only one paper and it's not that lengthy. Would recommend if you need it for a GE.
Weekly quizzes that are based on readings but they are pretty easy. Class graded based on the quizzes, three essays and section participation. No MIDTERM and NO FINAL. Class isn't really mandatory but they sometimes take role at the beginning of lecture; usually random times. Slides aren't posted online and he literally reads off of them.
There are weekly quizzes but he gives you 10 chances at practice quizzes beforehand. If you aren't getting at least a B on the quizzes, then you're doing something wrong. Essays instead of exams. Grade is largely based on these and section and TA interaction. Put in the work and you're basically guaranteed an A. Great way to get into global!
McCarty genuinely cares about his students. He will challenge you, but also provide the support and humor needed to excel. One of my favorite professors at UCSB.
I really enjoyed McCarty's class. When I was in his class last quarter he didn't give us the weekly quiz but we did have the weekly writing assignments which were quite overwhelming and took up most of my week. When it comes to lectures, I found him interesting, engaging, and thought-provoking
McCarty is super nice and knows what he is talking about! You do not need to go to lectures at all and you get to practice each quiz 10 times before you take the actual one and he gives all of the questions that are on the actual quizzes during the practice ones. 3 papers that are super easy. Just attend section and you're good. EASY CLASS
