Maybe it was just the material being easier, but he was very clear on everything in this class. Midterm and final were very similar to homework. Only complaint would be the last assignment before the final, where it was 80 problems on linear algebra. It was tedious to do it all, but it really did help to learn the topic.

I've taken all the way through 5B and Ottman is by far the best teacher I've had. His class isn't easy, but he explains everything really well. This is pretty rare for math teachers at UCSB (most of them suck)

1 midterm, 1 final, quiz's in every section, & a bunch of online homework. He seems really nice and what not, but I could give a flying f*ck after i got my grade. Midterms and Final were very unfair, partial credit was almost not existent. Niceness only goes so far... HATE this professor, for real.

He is a decent professor though he can make mistakes often. He also is teaches a lot of trig.

I definatly agree with the person that commented below me. He makes it seem that his math class is the only class you have at UCSB. He assigns ridiculously long webwork assignments and his midterms and final were extremely difficult. Class averages on the test were D's on every exam. If you have a chance, choose another teacher

This is what it sounds like: he is a good 3C teacher, but I learned from experience he is a horrible 3B teacher. His HW was impossibly lengthy, and his tests were unbelievably difficult. I know I could have gotten a better grade, but that'd only happen if I let myself fail my other classes and did calculus from sunrise to sunset all quarter instead

Don't know about the Math3B but Ottman was definitely a great professor for Math 3C. Explained everything clearly, VERY helpful during office hours and fair enough tests. Best math professor I've had so far.

He lacks enthusiasm for teaching, is unprepared for lessons and does not explain problems clear enough.

This guy is absolutely terrible, his tests are extremely hard, you think you get it but you'll probably fail.

MATH3B . 13 Years Ago

People actually like this guy? Midterms are ridiculously hard, based on ridiculously hard homework. He's inconsiderate, lazy, and, like most math professors, uses the class as an excuse to exercise his God-complex. I would definitely avoid this guy if you're serious about maintaining decent grades.

Very good teaching style, says things in an understandable way. The content is pretty hard, but he makes it really not as bad.

MATH3C . 13 Years Ago

One of the best math professors I've ever had. The content of this class is difficult but he truly does his best at explaining it and is very straightforward. Teaches exactly what he will test you on. Most importantly, if something was confusing in lecture, he was very approachable in office hours and I always left with a understanding.

Class was fairly straightforward, was clear when it came to explaining concepts (though can't be said for the other math professors here). Grading is straightforward though the way quizzes were graded was horrible (3 points a quiz, a simple arithmetic error resulted in an automatic 2/3) though the midterm/final was graded fairly.

a great prof. clearly explains everything and goes over hard stuff in detail. section is also very helpful for understanding. make sure to get him- he is fun, nice and EASY. the book is not needed at all. its a complete waste of money

Just understand the concepts and the homework and the class should be little to no problem. Lecture is not mandatory and the book and CLAS are sufficient substitutes.

Good math teacher, explains topics well. The last 2 sections he didn't do such a good job on teaching, but other than that he taught the rest of the class really well. Never used the book so don't buy it.

Doing and understanding the homework is key to this class. He often makes minor mistakes in simple algebra and people will correct him, but he explains things well enough to do the homework.

Going to class and paying attention is all you need up until vector spaces and span, when you have to really work to understand. DEFINITELY go to CLAS. TA grades most of the exams. Definitely go to class the book is useless.

A great teacher! He explains everything, and even though it's a very challenging class he takes the time to make sure everyone understands it.

A good professor that cares about what the students learn during the quarter. Sometimes doesn't explain material in the best possible way, but is fairly organized. He can be humorous at times and understands that students are in college and may skip class. Very helpful if you ask him questions in person or at office hours.

Best math teacher I've had here by far! Lectures are clear and helpful, homework is reasonable. The tests seem hard but he's pretty generous with the grading. Gives partial credit for basically writing down "I don't know what to do next." I totally recommend him!

Great professor! Teaches in a very clear, concise manner. He's a very reasonable teacher-study in his class and you will do fine!
