Good lecturer, wasn't a fan of the over 80 slides a lecture and lack of outline as someone who handwrites their notes. Eventually, I figured out to jot down what he says and make sense of it later. TA dictates your experience, but if you talk to him, he does listen to some crazy stuff they pull sometimes. Loved talking to him, and passionate guy

Prof Yaqub is a funny guy and I appreciated the video clips, music, and jokes he included in his lectures. Paper instructions and final were straightforward. However, I really didn't like how he read off an outline for the entirety of class. It made it hard to stay awake, and it's a shame since the content's so interesting.

going to lecture is essential, readings are more optional but still helpful for essays. class is heavily dependent on the TA. 2 big papers and a final which he provides a comprehensive study guide for. Yaqub is an AMAZING lecturer, super engaging, talks quickly. great for a GE. $60 dollar course reader but people scan them. love this class.

This professor was very passionate about his teachings which made it easier to follow along. I just feel that your TA will determine whether you have a good experience in the class.

Not a bad class overall. Three main papers throughout the quarter which were easy enough and graded leniently. Participation assignments scattered throughout, mandatory section attendance. Course content wasn't that engaging to someone who doesn't like history, but the lectures were easy to follow and the material was well-presented.

Professor Yaqub is amazing! He is probably my favorite professor at UCSB. While his lecture slides do not contain much information, he is a great lecturer and everything is very straightforward. Yaqub is a fair grader and is also quite understanding of unforeseen circumstances. I definitely recommend his courses!

Prof Yaqub is very passionate about what he is teaching and he is an amazing lecturer. He only grades on two things, a midterm paper and a final which were graded tough, but fair. The class is very reading heavy, but the lecturers pair well with the readings and it is worth it. Learned a lot and enjoyed it!

Prof Yaqub's lectures were very interesting and he took the time to incorporate videos/primary sources into them which made the lecture more involved and captivating. Also posted lectures online, so attendance was optional - however final and midterm papers required citations/evidence from readings and lectures. Would highly recommend this class!

Really great lecturer who makes it interesting by inserting videos. There's a lot of reading but the essays are honestly really short and he doesn't grade too harshly.

Reading responses worth 35%, midterm essay worth 25%, final essay worth 40%. I really enjoyed this class. The topic was interesting, there were interesting videos, and when Professor Yaqub lectures he sounds super passionate about what he's talking about. He's super cool. It was a lot of fun!

Im a senior and this his class has definitely been one of my favorites at UCSB since I've been here. Really nice guy but also really passionate about what he teaches. Two papers which accounted for most of the grade but I found the papers quite fun to do as the lectures and readings are really interesting and engaging.

This is a FANTASTIC course! It includes different forms of historical writings and various historical topics. The reading tasks are heavy, but it's an honor course so it's very reasonable. The assignments required to submit are just six two-pages papers from nine weeks and two cooperative presentations. The discussions are very meaningful.

Professor Yaqub is by far one of my favorite professors at UCSB. I took his 17C class during the pandemic. His lectures were so fun and interesting. He always found ways to include music, art, politics, philosophy etc in the material he was teaching. I wish I could take more of his classes, 100% would recommend.

Ngl I hated this class but I'm pretty biased bc I don't like hist to begin with, I had to take it for a prereq. His lectures were so overly detailed they got boring and I literally stopped watching them after the 2nd week. 6 full hour prerecoeded lectures per week?? No thanks. I think there were 3 papers total and a weekly discord post.

LOTS of reading but the lectures are enjoyable since he makes them more like podcasts. Your grade depends on your TA but I got lucky and had an easygoing one.

Prof. Yaqub is great! His lectures make history seem so interesting and he is super accessible outside class. He has 2 papers and a written final, though, and those assignments are super tedious because the prompts are a bit confusing, or there are a lot of mini prompts in one big prompt. He is great though!

prof yaqub gives great lectures that were super engaging. the big assessments were two papers (around 1000-1400 words) and the final, which was also a writing assignment. loved everything about this class :)

took 171D Sping 2020 (online-COVID-19) and this was my favorite class e v e r. Graded on 2 papers (clear rubric and lets you interpret in your own way) that are really simple and easy. weekly reading responses may help your grade; I think he just checks to see if you did them and takes that into account when calculating final grades.

My favorite professor at UCSB! Very well-spoken, you can tell how much effort he puts into teaching. He makes extremely confusing topics sound simple. I'm always zoned out in other lectures, but he kept me engaged the whole time. Very accommodating when I was ill and needed an extension, and at the end of the quarter with the COVID outbreak.
