Lectures are a little boring. Not completely necessary to attend as long as you keep up on the reading/slides. He cares about history and is funny but it is hard to stay engaged. 2 papers, and 1 final with a study guide. Topics covered are interesting. Not a bad class if you need a history class.

I am not a fan of history and was not looking forward to having to take this class, but professor Yaqub totally took me by surprise and made me love it! His lectures are like listening to a story and he is a great speaker. He often does funny impressions and he does a great job at keeping the info interesting. I definitely recommend! Fun professor!

He's very kind, and does his best to make dry material interesting. However, there are many resources that can substitute for lecture. Barron's EZ 101 Study Keys for American history are solid gold. Unfortunately, they make lectures obsolete (and, he posts his slides on Gauchospace anyways). Very, very nice, but lectures aren't that helpful.

Yaqub is awesome! He is funny and very invested in the material and making sure his students know the material. His lectures are dense but interesting! Heavy reading but an easy A if you do all of the work/pay attention in class. Two papers that are relatively easy, him/his TAs are available to help! Thoroughly enjoyed taking this class with him.

Yaqub is a GREAT professor. Lectures are a bit boring but he tries to make them interesting with great music, videos & jokes. Comes to lecture prepared & is very well versed in the material. Only had to write one paper, prompt was released 3 weeks before the due date. Exams were easy if you studied. Make sure to do the weekly reading from reader

Fantastic professor. Salim was by far the best professor I've had my first year here. He's a wonderful lecturer and really thorough and his analysis. Partly due to my interest in 20th century American history, I was glued into every aspect of his lectures. Had Elrod as a TA, and while he came off being pompous and a jerk at first, he's pretty good.

Entertaining and straightforward. It's easy to zone out of his lectures but it's good to still go to get the general sense of the class. Posts his slides online. Make sure you get a good TA tho to help you explain things! Don't get Elrod!!!!! 1 paper, 1 midterm, 1 final.

Most interesting history class I've ever taken!!! Professor Yaqub is definitely one of my most favorite professors that I've had the pleasure of having, as he always made lectures super interesting. The study guides for the midterm and final basically lay out exams, so as long as you put a little effort into the class, you'll get an A :)

Professor Yaqub gave amazing lectures -- he mixed in videos, songs, and voice impressions that made the 1 hour class really easy and enjoyable to sit through, Study guides tell you exactly what you need to know for the test. He really knows his stuff (Yale grad) and is super passionate. Grade is 1 MT, final, essay, and section.

Best professor I've had. I've hated learning history throughout my entire life, and I took this class and I literally WANTED to go to class. I can't say enough good things about Professor Yaqub, and he literally can make anything fun and easy to learn about. I was never bored in any of his lectures and he honestly is just amazing

Salim is the best lecturer I've ever had. Makes them extremely interesting by adding videos, songs, impersonations, and other things to break the monotony of an hour+ long lecture. Can't recommend him enough. Be sure to study for the final and work hard on your essays! He's a great teacher, but that does not mean he's an easy A.

Prof Yaqub is a great lecturer, and is very adamant about his courses. I've taken three upper-div classes with him and all of them have been interesting and fairly graded. He usually assigns two short (4-5 page papers) in lieu of a midterm (woo!), and the final is very manageable. I highly recommend Prof Yaqub. He genuinely cares about his students

Salim is what more professors should strive to be like. His lectures were amazing and clear, and he constantly used discussions & debates to break up the monotony of long lectures. Because I took his UD course, he allowed us much freedom on the papers to voice our own historical opinions and analysis. Incredible class, and I learned so much.

Had him for 9 and 17C. His specialty is foreign policy, and it very clearly shows when he's teaching about Cold War policy. Extremely fair grader who leaves you with constructive remarks, really engaging and funny, and wonderful to talk with at office hours. Lots of reading. 17C - 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 paper. 9 - 3 papers.

HIST9 . 9 Years Ago

No tests, grade is based only on three take-home essays, a small presentation, and participation. Class was really easy. i think the subject and professor of HIST 9 changes every quarter , but the subject I took was Reagan's Foreign Policies in the 1980's. Just as boring and tedious as it sounds. Class met once a week for 3 hours.

Yaqub was amazing!! Great lectures, he could go pretty fast, and he doesn't use visual aids very much just for pictures. This was one of my favorite classes. He makes American History surprisingly interesting. He's great and tells dorky jokes in class.

One of the single best professors I've ever had. Funny, engaging, interested in the subject. Barely touched the textbook, 1 Midterm, 1 Final, study and you'll be fine.

Had Professor Yaqub for a U.S.-Middle Eastern policy course and absolutely loved it. The lectures were interesting and he's clearly very interested in his topic. Grading was fairly easy (although he nitpicks on grammar) and his occasional voice impersonations tend to be spot on. Would take again!

Professor Yaqub is easily one of the best faculty members in the History Department. Apart from being an interesting class, Yaqub made it easy to digest and entertaining. Grading consisted of two papers (5-6 pages in length) in class participation and a final exam. The readings were always really interesting, never once did I feel bored.

Taken 2 classes with Prof. Yaqub and he's easily my favorite Professor I've had in my four years here. His lectures are engaging, fun, interesting, and just generally enjoyable to attend. I was genuinely sad on the few occasions I had to miss class. He's very approachable & incredibly knowledgable. Can't recommend a prof more. Take any class w him

Great professor, have had him for multiple classes. Extremely knowledgeable about almost every aspect of US foreign policy. Classes were 2 papers and a final. Definitely doable but you have to do your part of the work too. Recommend for everyone to try and take a class with him

Prof. Yaqub is one of the best lecturers I've ever come across. Very approachable and accepting of various points of views. He really goes the extra mile to make his classes entertaining by incorporating in-class activities such as debates & movies.Attendance is mandatory (not a problem for me, I loved coming to class) His impressions are awesome!
