Never responds to emails and as th other students said, the exams are very tricky
expect questions that are geared for u to fail on midterms! like specific irrelevancies from a 3 minute video u watched in class yrs ago. good luck!
tests are worth most of the grade and are insanely hard. TA agreed and its so unreasonable for a comm course. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DONT HAVE TO.
Super knowledgeable. He made theories actually seem interesting, and his background in comm academia provided insight that was good to know both in life and for the exams. He provided a ton of test review opportunities and was very engaging in lecture.
Afifi is an amazing professor, my personal favorite at this school, and genuinely cares about his students and his research and wants everyone to succeed. Content of Comm89 is extremely important for POC, very eye-opening, culturally informed teaching.
As a professor he is OK, my only and biggest complaint is his exams were created to fail you. Purposefully makes trick questions with the answers sounding the same. I would go to office hours and stay after class with TA and barely even passed the class. Peng was the best TA fr.
I expected this class to be a breeze since it was Comms, but honestly I had to hustle a bit by the end of the quarter. Grading criteria for assignments wasn't super clear (imo) and exams had very specific questions. However, Afifi was a kind and engaging professor! Loved him!
tests were way too hard, TA even agreed and said that his test
Afifi was an amazing lecturer and I really enjoyed COMM89! Definitely recommend as this course was not too hard and not too easy. He really cares about his students and does his best to make the class inclusive for everyone. I would take a class with him again because he was so easy to understand
Amazing professor!! He cares so much about his students and is interesting in lecture. Take his class
Professor Afifi is incredibly knowledgable and a great lecturer. My first comm course and I loved it. The course is made up of 4 exams and 2 papers as well as a small portion for section attendance and SONA. follow the detailed instructions for the papers. To succeed study Afifi's slides, briefly read the readings, and actively listen in class.
I really liked Prof Afifi as he has strong social consciousness and constantly ties what we learn to societal context. He is also a good lecturer and caring and understanding for students. Exams could be pretty hard and tricky, though, you'll only be able to get them correct if you understand concepts and their correlations thoroughly. Great TAs.
Professor Afifi lectures are super interesting and easy to follow. This class was required for pre-comm and I actually ended up enjoying it because of him. He is super accessible outside of class and responsive on email. If you keep up with the reading and take notes in lectures you'll do great!
He is a respected researcher. However, also a tough grader. The paper was graded so low. Lecture is easy to understand but was not well-organized. And his method for knowing whether you read or not is through some insignificant points (unrelated to theories). He cares about students but this class is very difficult in-person.
This prof is great! He genuinely cares about students and will try his best to accomodate people with tests and assignments. He understands that the time we are living in sucks and affects people strongly. He is clear about his expectations and makes lectures interesting and easy to understand.
Professor Afifi lowered everyone grades because of a mistake he made, and blamed it on the students after the quarter ended. Tests are based on his rambling in lecture, not slides, slides are plain, I did better on exam reading the nonrequired textbook instead of going to lecture. Doesn't really live up to his frame in the department.
Lowered everyone's exam grade by 10p after the semester ENDED because of an error he overlooked on his system, send long email to ALL students BLAMING us for not telling him .Unprofessional, focus too much on his own research instead.
If you mention that you're a first generation student he'll give you a better grade. Not kidding.
Despite being a respected researcher and professor on campus, Afifi's course was nothing but inaccessible and meaningless to me. His 2 lectures per week put me to sleep and he constantly fell into tangents. That, along with the fact that he relied too much on his TAs to do his job made his online class a tremendous waste of my time and money.
Professor Afifi is hands down one of the best professors I have had. He relates lectures with topics that are relevant in today's world and he is EXTREMELY caring towards his students. If you are lucky enough to take him, you will learn a lot and his lectures are very interesting and relatable.
Overall Professor Afifi is a good professor. However he can at times be a little abstract. He also sometimes rambles or goes off topic, causing him to fall behind. He definitely cares about his student and is very understanding. Also a massive difficulty spike in last exam really trashed a lot of peoples grades.
Prof. Afifi is a great lecturer and is very considerate and accommodating to his students. Explains comm theories in an interesting way and connects them to major events like the pandemic & BLM as examples. There's either a paper or a test (2 papers, 4 midterms) almost every week, but it's all straightforward and manageable.
Walid is a great person that truly understands fairness, equality and privilege. He is extremely caring and his lectures are great. Sadly your grade mostly depends on the TA you have. Exams are fairly straightforward but the papers are graded tough!
Professor Afifi's online class was great, I would definitely recommend. Most of his lectures were pre-recorded and very interesting. There was no homework, and the tests and papers were very easy (be sure to follow the paper criteria very carefully if you want an A). Overall a very interesting class, and he cares a lot about his students!
