Professor Afifi is hands down one of the best professors I have had. He relates lectures with topics that are relevant in today's world and he is EXTREMELY caring towards his students. If you are lucky enough to take him, you will learn a lot and his lectures are very interesting and relatable.
Overall Professor Afifi is a good professor. However he can at times be a little abstract. He also sometimes rambles or goes off topic, causing him to fall behind. He definitely cares about his student and is very understanding. Also a massive difficulty spike in last exam really trashed a lot of peoples grades.
Prof. Afifi is a great lecturer and is very considerate and accommodating to his students. Explains comm theories in an interesting way and connects them to major events like the pandemic & BLM as examples. There's either a paper or a test (2 papers, 4 midterms) almost every week, but it's all straightforward and manageable.
Walid is a great person that truly understands fairness, equality and privilege. He is extremely caring and his lectures are great. Sadly your grade mostly depends on the TA you have. Exams are fairly straightforward but the papers are graded tough!
Professor Afifi's online class was great, I would definitely recommend. Most of his lectures were pre-recorded and very interesting. There was no homework, and the tests and papers were very easy (be sure to follow the paper criteria very carefully if you want an A). Overall a very interesting class, and he cares a lot about his students!
Afifi is an awesome lecturer and his lecture is attractive. The prompt of papers are clear and the exams are fair.
This was my first comm class at UCSB. Lots of reading but exams were not that difficult. Exams are reading based and lecture based so pay attention.
I was scared to take this class online (fk covid 19) with this professor because there were no comments about him so I thought I would share with you all :) It is week 3 and I can genuinely say this is my favorite professor. He is extremely respectful to his students and actually wants us to. He literally made our class our own Spotify playlist!!!!
He's a super nice & funny person, but not a great lecturer. He goes on tangents a lot and will rush towards the end of the quarter. However, his tests are on the easier side and the paper was long but doable. He uploads all the slides and everything you need to know for the exams are on there. Definitely talk to him about the paper.
COMM 151 over the summer with Dr. Afifi was awesome! Very interesting class. His class is mostly lecture based with 1-2 readings (it was only a 3 week class). Grade was based on midterm, paper and final. Overall, amazing content and his lectures are easy to follow. He posts slides online but take notes on everything he says and you'll pass.
his 3 week course is terrible -he's making us write a 7 page paper along with 2 exams while other profs discarded the paper. -very unclear with what he wants us to know for exams. He NEVER gets straight to the point during lect -uploaded our study guide for the midterm one day before the midterm and titled it "very incomplete study guide".
Finally got the chance to take the famed Afifi and he's worth the hype! His lectures are engaging, relatable, and he adds a depth of social awareness to his topics. He's a great LGBT ally and recognizes his privileges. He genuinely cares about his students, and he's very straightforward with grading and tests. I'd take him again!
I enjoyed this class and Afifi's way of lecturing. He is funny and makes the lecture go by fast. The material is interesting and relevant, he shows a lot of video clip examples and tells personal stories about his family. He encourages discussion and will call on you. The usual research paper and straight forward tests, but you got to study.
He is passionate about this stuff and really informative about social justice. However, he has no structure and his objectives are unclear. He moves deadlines around so it becomes confusing to stay on top of what is due when. His expectations for the group project are unrealistic and there is not enough guidance. I really regret this class.
He seems to be very passionate about his teaching but he always gets side tracked when he's giving his lectures & he never makes it through the entire powerpoint. His TA is awful. When I turned in my analysis paper it took over a month for me to see my grade... I had no idea what grade I had going into the final. Easy but very unorganized class.
Awesome professor! Explains everything clearly, makes class exciting, but he makes it clear you have to study on top of it. Multiple choice midterm/final. 3 small application papers (somewhat difficult, though). Tests are fair if you've studied the book. Very eager to help students and gives extra credit! I recommend this class and him as a prof.
Walid is a really cool guy but his course objectives are pretty unclear. His test questions are confusing and even with flashcards and extensive reading notes it is hard to understand what he will put on the test. Also, his papers are short but NOT easy!
Walid is awesome - he's just a cool/chill professor and it's reflected in his teaching. The main component of this class was the social marketing campaign worth the majority of your grade, which took LOTS of effort and out of class time. But overall, take this class, it's worth it because this is one of the most applicable COMM classes out there.
Very passionate about teaching. One midterm, one final, one research paper, and a 2 page application paper. Tests are straight forward. Easy A.
Took this over summer in a 3-week course. SO much fun, and super easy! We had class MTW, a quiz each Weds, and a paper due the last Weds. Totally worth it cuz Walid is awesome and so much fun. Not sure how it is during the year but summer rocked!
Walid is an awesome prof. Fun class, good discussion, valuabele and applicable to life. definitely recommend.
I took both 111 and 107 with Walid, and I loved them both! He's so entertaining. I took a summer course with him, and he kept my attention through a 3-hr lecture, which is impressive. He gets most of his test questions from the lecture slides and the examples he gives in class, so come to lecture. Great guy. Really cares about his students, too!
He is someone that would be a really cool, entertaining friend, but as a professor he is VERY hard to listen to. He walks around the entire room constantly and the biggest distraction in the class is himself. He doesnt clarify what material he wants you to know. He'd be a great friend, but he's not a good professor.
Walid is funny, he loves to talk about his kids. I took his class for three week summer class. The reading is very managable and easy to understand. He says he grades the paper really hard but hes not that bad. Quizzes are really simple as is the final, just know what he goes over in class, look over notes the night before, and you'll get an A.
