Absolutely loved this class! I enjoyed going to her lectures and thought the material was very interesting. She presented the material enthusiastically and clearly. There are online quizzes that are easy if you do the short online readings. Skim read the book quickly a few days before the midterm and payed attention in class and I was fine.
Nice person, not the best teacher. Another professor who cares more about her own research than teaching. Lectures are pointless. Only about 60% of the lecture slideshows are on the test. I read the book, but I feel like the tests made the subject harder than it was supposed to be. If you can avoid, I would.
She is NOT as great as everyone says she is. Her tests are misleading and tricky, she isnt very understanding via email, and her lectures are sooo boring. Two tests, five quizzes, and thats it. 35% midterm, 55% final, 10% quizzes. Its not that bad, but its no where near as wonderful as everyone else has described.
She is a decent teacher. A little too passionate about the material as she spreads feminist propaganda, but she is helpful if you need it. Dont ask questions in class, just go to her office hours for further clarification. Tests are a little outside of the box, so you have to do more than study her notes. Read the book and understand it!
I actually liked going to this lecture, which is often rare. She was a great teacher who gave fair tests, and when the Thomas Fire raged, she even offered fire extra credit... real nice lady
Shelly is an amazing professor, a great lecturer, and the exams are easy to pass as long as you keep up with the material. Basically only need to know the vocal and major studies that she mentions in lecture in order to pass the tests. Only one midterm and one final, with a few short online quizzes.
Awesome professor! I don't know why people are saying her tests are so tricky - all the questions are pretty straightforward. You do have to apply the material to the tests but a good 80% of the questions are memorization-based. The textbook was helpful in reiterating the ideas in lecture, but if you just pay attention to the slides, you're set.
Best professor I've had at UCSB yet. She made this class so interesting that I never wanted to skip a class. Her exams are easy if you attend lecture and keep up with the reading (some questions come from the readings). She makes class so fun and I feel like I learned so much overall in her class. Pay attention, do the readings, study lectures A+
She's alright. All of her stellar reviews on here are a bit misleading, she's not as great as everybody says. She claims here tests aren't tricky but they are. Very wordy. Lectures are quite dry and boring. Doesn't really do a good job at connecting the dots of her lectures and explaining their overall big picture. Not very helpful during OH either
She is a nice teacher. Her lectures are boring but pretty easy to understand. Going to class made it no different, rather learning it on your own was more helpful. I fell asleep almost everytime I went. Make sure you know the lectures word by word and the big picture of the readings. 1 midterm and final. Don't take this class lightly
I've taken 3 classes with her at UCSB, she might seriously be my favorite professor of all time. She's clear, thought-provoking, funny, and presents the material really clearly. Her classes are pretty easy -- pay attention during lecture and you'll learn all the material you need to know!
Amazing professor/class!! Interesting, clear, well-organized, thought-provoking, and really easy. You don't need the textbook as long as you pay attention to all her lectures. I highly recommend the class.
Not a super easy A, but a great professor. Must go to lecture, even though she posts slides, and you will be rewarded. Loves teaching. Book is a must have as questions come from readings that aren't presented in class. Must work for it. There is no curve as people tend to do well. Exams are quite tricky; read questions thoroughly.
Don't be mislead - this class isn't as easy people on here make it seem. She's a great professor but the tests are hard and tricky. Someone on here said you don't need the book? It's a LIE. You DO need it and you can't just memorize all of the material, you need to know how to apply it and describe them in situations.
She is absolutely amazing. Psych 102 was such a fun class and if you do the reading and go to lecture, the tests were pretty straightforward! Absolutely take any class you can with her!!
Gable uses a lot of examples and you need to know them in order to pass the test. The tests were a little tricky. The book is a must-have. The quizzes are short and easy. You need to be attentive in lecture in order to get good grades.
She choose a good textbook. She is a fair grader. Tests and texts were not too difficult. Lectures were insightful. Quizzes were short. She always takes time to answer questions in class. She always gave reminders for assignments too. Well organized instructor.
Professor Gable is just all around an awesome lady. She is so intelligent, but she can break things down so everyone can understand. The subject is really interesting but can be confusing at times and she slows down to make sure everyone understands. Tests are a little tricky, PAY ATTENTION TO THE STUDIES SHE MENTIONS. She has an awesome style too!
Shelly Gable is the love of my life. She's brilliant, fierce, clear, and super funny. If you are contemplating about taking her class, stop right here. Shelly is going to change your life. The Positive Psychology course is really interesting, based on facts, and not vague at all. I would give my left foot to be able to take another class by her.
Shelly Gable will always be one of my favorite lecturersprofessors at UCSB! She's very engaged with the material and I'm always interested in what she has to say! For this class, attendance definitely not mandatory at all but I would HIGHLY recommend it because they are really interesting! No book for this class either, just online readings!
Very clear about what material will be on the tests, amazing lecturer. Not easy if you don't put the work in, but if you do it's pretty easy to get an A and she's an amazing professor
Teacher is very resourceful and no text needed, all online articles. Tests were a bit complex only due to the short answer questions but if you study the articles you will do fine. Highly recommend, although it does get boring sometimes.
The material was so interesting to me and definitely a big part of that was how she presented it. She keeps things relevant and straightforward. I think anyone in any major could totally benefit from this class; topics are relevant to so many aspects of the world. Super helpful and understanding woman.
This is one of the best psych professors I have had at UCSB. She has very interesting lectures full of really cool examples and experiments. Going to lecture was not mandatory but it made the tests very easy. The reading was short and to the point. I highly recommend taking this class with her; a very easy A
