I was thoroughly upset with the course: 1) the midterm study guide did NOT match the actual midterm. 2) the lectures were hard to follow and did not always correlate with the lesson. 3) the weekly quizzes at times would contain content on events that weren't yet taught (or in the lesson plan at all) resulting in a lowered grade.
Prof Lindemann is an interesting professor. He has been at UCSB for 50 years. Yes, that is right, 50. Yet his teaching style can be frustrating if you're not prepared to weed out the pertinent material in his lectures, which are both long and without pause. Because of this, the midterm/final is difficult to prepare for, but doable. Don't recommend.
Did not welcome open discussion and took offense easily. The class mood was icy as nobody wanted to annoy Dr. Lindemann.
fascinating class with a lot of potential for intellectual discussion not possible in conventional classes. Quite a bit of work for a 2-unit course, though to be fair it is an upper-div honors seminar. Quizzes a bit annoying, and prof has high expectations for your final paper. Prof has a very broad and intense understanding of the jewish existence
Lindeman is perhaps the most brilliant man you will ever meet, the kinda guy you want to be your grandpa. However, he is very challenging. Lectures are mandatory but are very worth attending. Strict grader and he doesn't take BS. If you're willing to risk getting a C (or lower) in exchange for one of the best classes ever, take a Lindeman class
Old school professor. I had him twice and was impressed by his voluminous knowledge of history. He speaks at least five languages and commands English like a tactician. Be warned: he is the most difficult professor in the department. Attend all classes, and only speak if you're making a relevant point; he has no sympathy for the unprepared.
Professor Lindemann is an excellent teacher. His class is challenging and requires a high level of geographic literacy but he is extremely knowledgable and willing to share his knowledge. He is a strict but fair grader requiring proper grammer and spelling on his wriiting assignment and tests. His classes are challenging but worthwhile.
One of the best professors at UCSB. I had him three times, including my proseminar. He also wrote recommendations for me for grad school. The quizzes, book reviews, and tests are a lot, but you wind up learning what you need to. He's a fair grader.
He is nice but too demanding. Quizzes and exams are hard. He gives minuses points if you choose a wrong answer from a multiply choice question.
If you like geography and have a lot of time to dedicate to his class then go for it. However, his lectures are scattered and sometimes hard to follow. He is an extremely hard grader and he loves to give you maps. good luck in his class you will need it! I do not recommend.
One of the best history professors! Brings the events of European Histroy into focus, facilitating a grater understanding of what's happening today. Sarkozy, Brown, Putin, Merkel!!! How can one possible understand contemporary France, Great Britain, Russia, and Germany, and their leadership without a clear grasp of the European past. See Prof A.S.L
He is not the easiest history professor here, but he is definitely the best. He knows his stuff. His tests are hard and challenging, but if you do the reading and attend lectures you should do fine.
Lindemann is a fair grader, and an extremely interesting lecturer. Do good on the quizzes, the Extra Credit can save you. By the Way he is very strict about grammar, so don't mess it up on the BR.
Everybody complains about Lindemann's difficulty but really, all you have to do is show up to lecture and do the reading, it's not rocket scientistry. I took all his upper div courses and did well in them becuase I worked hard for my grade, God forbid. He's a grammar nazi though, so watch out for that.
VERY DIFFICULT PROF. He is very hard in terms of grading, but only compared to other history teachers, i mean it's a difficult class, but it's also an upper division history class, so it's not supposed to be a cakewalk. He's interesting, and I would recommend him as long as you have time.
Those who say this class is not hard have not taken an upper division course where HE grades all the work. He's a VERY difficult professor, yet maybe one of the most intelligent. He says a whole lot of NOTHING in lecture, is UNCLEAR in what he is trying to say, somewhat snobby if you're not a genius, and reads these ratings. He's unreasonably hard
Really good class if you're interested in the material, but it's NOT easy. He's awesome at office hours and is more than willing to have a convo about hist or anything else. The book review paper isn't bad at all, but ta's can make it a pain in the ass. other than that, the class is more than worthwhile.
The class was not that hard. It depends on how your TA grades. The quizes are extremly easy if you actually do the reading and they dont affect your grade (only subtracts/adds points to your grade if you failed or did good). I loved his lectures and the essays were general and he gave practice tests

Students who are lazy and/or illiterate should not take his class because he will not spoonfeed you the material. You have to keep up with the reading and his pace of lecture. If you show him that you are trying, he is surprisingly helpful and easy to talk to.
Professor seems like an jerk during lecture but one on one, he's pretty cool. However, if you get Ricardo Caton as a TA, You're screwed. This TA thinks he's god or something....even prof. lindemann thinks he's too hard of a grader.
Hard Class. Do not fall behind in reading. Weekly quizzes are ridiculously hard, but do well in section/paper and you'll be fine. Lectures are boring, drink coffee before so you can stay awake.
Never take this class with him
He only gave one essay for the midterm and it was very tough. He took it from only 1 chapter of the book and asked really detailed questions about people who were mentioned for only 3 or 4 sentences. His quizzes were fair at first, but then once he saw people were doing okay on them, he made them impossible to get the extra credit point.
