If you value hearing both sides of a debate, do not take this class. Grading was based on how well you adhered to the professor and TA's opinion. No room for free thinking, you were told what to think. Easy class with 3 papers, but frustratingly one sided.
Really awesome professor. He made the final optional, gave extra credit for attending, and then gave everybody 100% for attendance grade. Although there is a lot of reading and many thought that he was a tough grader, I really enjoyed his class.
Professor Kretz is amazing. My favorite professor thus far, he was so insightful and so good at lecturing engagingly. Material was easy to understand and interesting. I went to his office hours just to talk to him about the subject matter and his opinions and he had so many good things to say. The class is so good, highly recommend.
Best professor I've had. I took HIST 74 and went out of my way to take him again. His lectures are informative and comprehensive. I recommend reaching out to him, especially for the essays, because he gives great insight and answers your questions in detail. Highly recommend his classes.
Professor Kretz has by far been one of my favorite professors. He is very passionate about the subject matter he is teaching. 3 essays, 2 books and lots of articles.

this class honestly isn't hard. You're grade is determined based off of 3 essays (which the TA grades) and a final which is a mini essay and the revisions of the three past essays. Read the material for the essays! Go to your TA for feedback before you turn in the essays and you'll be good. You discuss the readings in section
Favorite professor I've ever had- he is so passionate on the subject and caring towards his students, I always really enjoyed going to his lecture. Pretty much everything is graded based on three essays which were super easy. Highly recommend any of the classes he is teaching especially this one!
kretz is amazing!!! his lectures are closer to TED talks than regular lectures, every topic covered is told in a fascinating way and he knows how to make every student engage in what we are discussing.
One of my fav profs I've ever had! Kretz writes hour+ lectures and delivers them like speeches his passion for teaching the material clearly and thoroughly is so evident. As a young radical leftist, this course provided me with so much history and source material to ground my political arguments/opinions going forward. This guy's the best!
Professor Kretz is so passionate about everything he teaches; although his lectures sometimes felt really long. He was available every week during office hours with really helpful insight. Your grade is solely based on your TA, so figure out what writing style they enjoy. Overall super interesting course and amazing reads.
Professor Kretz changed my life. I literally was on the verge of tears multiple times in his lectures because of how moving they were. Someone said writing heavy but it's 3 essays which is standard, and they are straightforward prompts. He is so passionate, smart, approachable, and kind. I think everyone should be required to take his class!
