Really TOUGH GRADER!!!!Curve Down a lot. Even if you got final ranking around 20/64 you will still receive a letter grade B or B-. The class is very hard so if you have another choice DO NOT TAKE 173!

Tough midterm, boring lectures, all his slides online. 25% Weekly Quiz Based on HW, 20% Midterm, 55% Final. Horrific handling of the coronavirus situation. Gave a take home final then decided to throw it out because people worked on it together. Said he would replace midterm score with final but lied about that. Gave final grades based on midterm.

Highly recommend avoiding at all costs. Rounded grades down 20% during a national pandemic because he believed people cheating during his take home final. Nearly impossible to get a good grade with incredibly harsh curve. Absolutely heartless human and professor who constantly flexes how smart he is.

I love him as a professor! I left ucsb two years ago but I still remember how amazing he was! The class was hard, but the quizzes were reasonable as long as you did your homework. Go to his office hours! He was great in explaining difficult concepts and open to talk about anything!

Roger is exceptionally bright and he really wants to see all his students succeed, however this class is extremely challenging. Fortunately, there was a large curve. Lectures are unnecessary, but I recommend going because Roger goes over a lot of example problems. Quizzes every week in section--study for them. Difficult class, nice professor.
