Lecture was really boring even though the professor is super knowledgeable. Tests are absurdly hard and the study guide was not helpful but the curve helps a ton. Lots of extra credit to improve your grade. Eight page research paper wasn't too bad. Insane amount of readings, do go to lecture if you want a chance of doing well on the midterm.
Def cares about being involved with his students. A good person. Has lots of good material. Doesnt tell the realities of the horrors the Spanish committed to the California Natives. Idk if its because hes uncomfortable or what but he defends and downplays a lot that the Spanish forces Inflicted in California
Lectures aren't exciting but take good notes. Covers MUCH of midterm/final material in lecture. Do the readings some of it is on exams. Tough exams. Gives plenty of opportunity for extra credit or improve midterm grade. Provides some guidance for 8 page research paper. Really loves his subject and wants his students to succeed.
Super respected professor who is well-versed in his field, and it shows. I never went to lecture but busted my butt for the final paper and it pulled my grade from a near fail to decent. Notes on final paper: use hard-copy sources from the library (check section F). Go to lecture. Do the reader readings. Know key terms. Lots of memorization.
This was an upper-div for me and I made an account specifically to warn others about this particular class. This was the hardest class I have ever taken. Unnecessarily hard class. avoid if you can. The study guide was extremely extensive but vague, because the tests were so ridiculously specific, it was really hard to study for.
vvv and another thing because i ran out of characters. Test are hard unless you really study in depth mainly because he talks a lot about the research he and his colleagues did on mostly the Chumash and expects you to know the history of the rest of California. Take note of the stuff in readings because info can be conflicting and outdated
Loved taking his class and he is chill and laid back. gives tons of extra credit and opportunities to make up low test scores. Read and youll get an A for sure
He is very boring and his tests are very hard. He will make you go on a field trip to the Museum of Natural History, even if you have no transportation. He will try his best to help you, but his study guides are vague and his instructions for your research paper are vague too. He gives out extra credit, and you should take advantage of all of it.
I made the mistake of not attending lecture before the midterm. I bombed the midterm, but got a B in the class. His tests are extremely hard, but if you meet with him he will help you improve your grade. Really nice guy. You have to do the reading to do well, and there's a lot of it. The 10 page paper is the easiest part of the class.
Great class, Johnson loves the subject, and is sweet. Posts lecture slides online so if you miss lecture it is mandatory to do the reading. Bombed the midterm (because I got behind on the texts) and still did well. If you meet with him, show interest, and put in the effort the class really isn't that hard. A highlight was the SB History Museum.
Johnson is the man! His tests are ridiculously hard, but there was a curve & lots of extra credit. Fieldtrip to SB Natural History Museum was fun. Don't take this class if you're looking for an easy A. I mostly only liked going because he is such an awkwardly cute old man. oh yeah & TONS of reading T_T
Lectures are boring, tests are insanely difficult, makes you go on a trip to the SB Museum of Natural History regardless of whether or not you have transportation, study guides are vague, assignment prompts are confusing as hell. Sometimes it feels like you have to be a mind reader in this class.
