You probably don't have a choice of taking his class or not but he definitely is not the best professor in the ChE department. He's really nice and reminds me of my grandpa but literally just points at his powerpoint the whole class, so you probably won't learn from lecture. The homeworks are definitely helpful to do well on tests.

Beyond an effectively instructed class with a perspicuous grading procedure and nonpartisan examinations , Professor Chmelka has an immeasurable vocabulary. I no longer have a word-a-day calendar on my Christmas list because the topography of my lexicon has significantly expanded. All in all, straightforward class with a straightforward professor.

midterm and final are from homework and lectures. Easy to get an A if you study.

Ridiculous

Lab takes a ridiculous amount of time writing the reports, and while Chmelka is strict on grading, he realizes that you are not a grad student. He really just wants you to get the overall report structure down, and while he will mark little details that are wrong, he is reasonably fair grading. He is really helpful if you bring a rough draft in.

He's seems like a nice guy at first but its a facade. Don't get on his bad side.

Chmelka is a really good guy. He really wants you to understand the material.

He doesn't give "nice curves" like was previously stated, but does adjust or "scale down" the grade scale for students. Expects too much for the midterm (yes, only one) and way too much for the final. I ended up dropping out of the ChemE major due to the high expectations from this professor and my prior ChemE professor (Gordon). HW wasn't too bad.

he's an all around good guy. he is very busy, and there on the weekends usually. he is always willing to help when free.

his lecture is pretty clear, homework is pretty hard but worth 30 precent of total gread, and you can get help from him all the time, he even hold office hours on weekends. you won't expect the class average on midterms are high, but he give nice curves, and he won't give u problems that havent showed up on homeworks.
