I read all the previous reviews and I was very scared before starting his class... Now I simply don't understand how could some people think all that about this professor. He is the one that knows the most. He is so nice and gentle and he has so much experience and knowledge. Absolutely the best

Lectures are dry, humorless, and convoluted. Examples used for class tend to be the exception rather than the norm. Good luck to those who are required to take this course. Your best bet is to find someone outside class to explain the material to you.

One of the best teachers a student will encounter! Extremely knowledgeable and is always there for his students.

Has absolutely no social skills making meeting him at office hours awkward. Unclear, formulaic teaching. Syllabus teaches only a very narrow range of analysis--useless to the needs of a performer. A true academic. Would be better at teaching at a school where students care... Terrible jokes and a low standard for the class, should demand much more.

Brilliant teacher! Made the class interesting by mixing historical and technical aspects of counterpoint. I was in the same exact class as the previous reviewer - the person is clearly an idiot! Rothfarb is a captivating teacher. Take all of his classes!

Fundamentals of Counterpoint was not taught in this class. A 1000+ yrs of counterpoint history was taught instead from his 1000+ page reader. Stay away. You will not learn anything but how bad he is at teaching. He will also blame his teaching inadequacy on your intelligence. I had to drop this class because I couldn't learn anything from him.

One of the best teachers I have ever had. I already have a graduate degree in another area and have attended many schools. I regret my health got in the way of taking more classes from him. He is a master of the class room and his subject.

You learn nothing in his class! We never even got a syllabus so the students didn't even know what the goal was in this class. He is a horrible teacher and a horrible grader.

Rothfarb is a brilliant music theorist and engaging instructor. He forces you to think about music on a deeper level, and expects you to work hard in order to understand. He has been instrumental in shaping how I understand music which helps me in theory and performance. But I worked my ass off. This is college. STUDY!

"Everything that's wrong with academia"- Lee Rothfarb as descibed by a fellow instructor. The man is unhelpful at best.

This man is pure evil. He has the social skills of a rock, & seems to regard the students as a nuisance to his very important position as the chair of the department. This is ironic, because, as chair, he is singlehandedly destroying the music department.
