Prof Garfield is seriously great. I've never done well in math, but this class? If you go to lecture, do the homework, and take advantage of the example midterms/final he provides you will do fine. Office hours are great too, if you take Prof Garfield I 100% recommend you go at least twice. The extra help is great and really can boost your score!
I loved having Peter as a professor!! He really does his best to make sure that your able to get the best grade possible.
Best Professor I've had so far. He is so caring of his students and will listen to their requests such as extending homework. Although I did not attend office hours I always heard it was very helpful. As long as you pay attention and do the homework you should be good. Also make sure you know how to do practice tests.
Everytime I go to lecture he always tries to get to know people. He really cares about his students, and I think he explains things very well. He always keeps tabs during lecture on how people are grasping the material through iClicker questions. Overall, go to class, if you don't, you probably will fall behind if you're not that great at math.
Peter is really sweet and truly cares about his students. He is very approachable and funny. The class is definitely no walk in the park and you certainly work for the 5 units. That being said, if you set up tutoring and keep on top of it, it's doable. Math is my weakest link and sitting at CLAS drop-ins made such a world of a difference for me.
He's the man! Made the classroom very inviting and encouraged collaboration on the journey to proofs and higher math. Was always fair and helpful when I went in to office hours. There is 3 homeworks / week which is randomly graded for accuracy, but it's mostly fair. Definitely makes you think and work together but I learned the stuff well.
Peter was an awesome professor, good at teaching, had helpful office hours, and his class was really easy to succeed in, which is much more than can be said about the other math professors here. The only thing that sucked was that theres homework due before every lecture which takes a ton of time.
Professor Garfield 's class is a very challenging. His hmwks are challenging and require a deep understanding of the material. He's a great teacher when he prepares and he gives his students a ton of help during his crucial office hours. I would give Peter a 5/5 if he returned tests before the last 2 weeks and didn't forget to prepare for class.
This class is extremely rigorous and demanding. There is a homework due every lecture. Notes were always on handouts given in class. Expect to go to office hours every week to get help on homework and topics. The class is very stressful, but if you put in the work and show you care, your overall grade will reflect it and the class was curved
Peter is a nice guy and good lecturer, and the material in the class is super interesting. I really wanted to like this class, but it ruined my quarter. Peter is lazy and doesn't give us midterm grades, homework solutions, or study guide solutions when he says he will, so I don't even know what I don't know. Definitely avoid.
This class is a mess. Goes through materials so quick you can't keep up most of the time and teaches more topics required. Insane homework due every lecture followed up by butthurt grader that hates everyone. The worst of all almost no solution to most of the homework and worksheets in class leaving students almost no material to study from. Avoid
Not finished yet so rating is only what we done so far. Overall Peter is a good lecturer and accessible outside. However, the class is a bit disorganized updating materials at last minute and blaze through it. Homework load is very heavy as we have the most of any math 8 due EVERY LECTURE. Also if grader is Ashwin avoid any class graded by him.
Hilarious, nice, and super approachable. I loved going to office hours, he is especially good at going one on one with students, and he has M&Ms and red vines. Lectures are a bit fast paced, but he is extremely lenient with grading. Go to section, do the homework, and office hours!! The GOAT.
Math is boring but Peter makes it fun! He is very nice and humorous!
Very good professor I have to say. Very patient and explain all calculus well and clear. Practice problems are similar to test. Work hard and all will be fine.
Great guy. Tries his best to help his students. Makes material engaging. Pretty funny, as well.
He is nice and very approachable person but he goes through problems very quickly during lecture and it is hard to keep up or he skips steps entirely. I do not have a strong math background so during lectures I was often lost and confused.
Amazing professor, he somehow made math my favorite lecture. Can't go wrong with him.
Garfield is a great prof, highly reccommend. I hate math but Peter doesn't make it too bad.
He tries to keep the class interesting but speeds through a lot of topics. Definitely don't buy the book and it helped me a lot to do CLAS for it. You get a notecard on all three midterms and the final which is helpful
The tests are heavily weighted. Material is stupid easy. It's pre-calc until the 7th week when we do basic derivatives and stuff. I would recommend this class for the easy A. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. He's the nicest person ever and always extends office hours. The reason I got an A+ was b/c of office hours.
Peter is very friendly and easy to talk to! His lectures can be very confusing and fast paced. I recommend going to CLAS! There are three midterms and a finalyou can use a flashcard. Overall, the class is not too difficult but there's not really a way of knowing your overall grade since nothing is posted, so beware of that!!
One of the few great professors in a math department that doesn't know how to teach. Extremely friendly! One downside was not much homework was assigned making it hard to tell if you knew the material. That might just be the course though. Midterm was very difficult, final was very easy.
Homework answers can all be found on Google or in the back of the textbook. He is very accessible outside of class and willing to help you with homework problems via email. Slides are detailed and well-prepared before class. Do the practice exams posted before the midterms/final and you should be fine. Allows a 3x5 notecard on all 3 midterms.
