Garfield was pretty cool but was a terrible prof/lecturer. Has problems with being timely and widely unorganized. Basically reads off slides and doesn’t do much to really teach. Practice exams are very similar to real exams which was nice. But him and his TAs don’t respond to emails and are difficult to reach. Don’t really recommend
Peter is one of the best professors Ive had at UCSB. His class is really straightforward and he wants you to succeed. He holds multiple office hour sessions per week, take advantage of them! The practice tests and homework really prepare you for the exams, stay on top of everything and youll be golden. Going to miss having Peter as a professor!
He’s a cool guy but a very poor professor. Many people like him cause they consider his class to be easy but neglect to mention how wildly unorganized the class is. I feel like he’s never thorough enough and most kids get by on memorization because his practice tests are exactly like the exams. TAs and professor never get back to you.
A great guy at heart but the class was terribly organized. There was a lot of frustration regarding the grades of our first midterm (which, two months later, is still not graded). The lectures are not very thorough—many of the steps and work for example problems are explained verbally; there is hardly any work shown. Wouldn't recommend.
I would love to give Professor Garfield another great rating, but after this class I can't. He's a funny guy who really cares about the class but this was a disaster. As of now(after we've taken the final) we still don't have our first midterm back. The class isn't too hard and the midterms are essentially old tests with new questions but still.
If youre taking a class with Garfield, be prepared to study by yourself. He only uses slides for lecture and the only help you will be getting is from CLAS or section. Work on your practice tests and maybe youll do good. Gives too much homework, imo. Very nice and respectful, but isnt thorough with explaining the math.
Professor Garfield is a mixed bag. On one hand he is a very nice guy with a fun personality in the classroom. On the other hand, he is an extremely slow grader with very imprecise lectures that make things more confusing than they need to be. As long as you slam the practice midterms this class is an easy A but prepare to deal with his confusion.
Peter is by far one of my favorite professors! Midterms and final are exactly like the practice tests he posts online. Weekly quizzes count more towards section attendance than for a true grade. Very easy to access outside of class and loves helping students during office hours. Very passionate about what he does and a very inspirational prof.
Do the homework, it really helps a lot. His lectures were okay, but he seemed like a good guy. The midterms were similar to his practice exams but a little bit difficult but doable. The final was optional though because of what was happening at the time.
The class itself is definitely tougher than 34A but very manageable with Peter. Hes super understanding and wants to help students. Theres homework due a few times a week but if you take the time to do it, itll definitely help your grade.
Professor Garfield is super funny and he is very approachable, he has practice tests for all midterms and final. His homework deadline can be adjusted if you talk to him. He also offers extra credit!! EASY class, EASY A!!
Really really nice guy! Always extends the homework if there are enough requests. You're allowed a notecard on all 3 midterms and the final. Really helpful in office hours. Funny lecturer. Really helpful through email: he was willing to work out a problem with me entirely through email so I wouldn't have to go into office hours! Harder than 34A.
I actually had him for both 34A and 34B (34B was a little more difficult to keep up with though). He has very accessible office hours that can be super helpful 1 on 1. He always has a lot of energy when lecturing which is great, but sometimes he speeds through the material. Overall, an excellent professor and I definitely suggest taking his class.
Very good and engaging lecturer, definitely cares about the success of students. Lots of homework due every MWF. Some homework problems are pretty interesting such as proving Fermat's little theorem, interesting counting, etc. Exams are pretty straightforward. Grading is extremely slow, 2nd midterm and final were graded 1 wk after grades due.
This dude is the goat such a nice guy and the class is so free he gives practice tests for every test and if you know how to do them you will get an A just learn what's on the practice test a few days before test day
Peter would always show up with a Big Gulp from 711 in the beginning of every lecture. Other than that, he did virtually nothing. Yes, he taught during lecture and he was fine, but I think he overcomplicated things so much. I took AP Calculus in High School and got an A+ in both 34A and 34B, and I never went to lecture.
The class in of itself is easy, the practice exams are almost EXACTLY like the actual test with a few curveball steps he doesn't mention (though if you show work and get it semi/ mostly wrong you'll still get a good grade). Honestly felt scared because I didn't take calc or even pre-calc in highschool but you'll be fine, enroll in CLAS groups.
Super easy class grading-wise, but if you don't learn super duper fast, you'll have to do a good amount of work outside of class. He moves super fast sometimes, and the homework isn't always the most straightforward. But the midterms don't impact your grade too much, and he'll raise a C to a B if you show effort by attending lectures and sections.
Extremely understanding and caring Professor. Exams are exactly the same as practice tests, just with different numbers, basically. Weekly quizzes in sections with 1 easy question (if you know what's going on). I averaged an 87% on all of the exams and 90% on the quizzes, and I got an A-. IClicker didn't have geo-location on.
Before going into this class I took AP Calculus in high school and that definitely helped me a lot. Peter is a caring person and wants to be there for his students, he is just not the best teacher and makes concepts a lot more complicated than they actually are. Putting in the effort he guarantees a B and gives 4 practice tests for study material
Great guy, easy class, free A, take the class
Garfield is a great professor - caring and passionate. However, he grades your exams really late. But he makes his lectures clear and fun. He lets you use a notecard for each exam, which is really helpful and guarantees a passing grade for each exam and the class in general. Would definitely take his class again!
Really nice guy, makes it easy to pass the class. Slow grader so beware. I didn't find his lectures very helpful but he posts all his slides so just be prepared to learn the material outside of class. Do the practice exams to prepare for tests and you'll be fine!
Engaging lectures by a charismatic and funny man. Seems like a really nice guy. Practice exams are practically identical to the midterms/final. Pay some attention in lecture/section and you'll be fine.
