The class was pretty interesting but Professor Weber, while a nice guy, is not a good lecturer. One day he spent an hour and 15 minutes on one slide. Most of his lectures aren't very helpful. The tests are pretty hard even though the material is not difficult to understand. Your grade consists of a midterm, final, paper, and debate attendance.
This course is compromised of three grades; a midterm, a final, and a debate paper. He reads off the lecture slides which are also posted on canvas. He's a really nice professor, however the fact that your grade is based off of only three assignments was stressful.
This review isn't the most helpful as I dropped the class halfway through (the day before the final deadline). However, Professor Weber has to be the worst teacher I have had at UCSB in my four years here. The lectures are boring and dated. His accent makes it difficult to understand and he goes on tangents like no other. No one pays attention.
2 tests and one debate. debate is easy but like 10 pages. nothing can really prepare you will for the tests and studying for them requires studying everything. lots of info in every lecture and even more in the readings. the book is pretty useless. if you just look over lectures its an easy C i'd say. he is very nice and has a great personality.
One of the worst class I've ever taken. The class material is easy to understand but you are graded on arbitrary things that are not based on your knowledge of the course material. Extremely unreasonable and harsh grading.
I dont know about regular quarters, but I would stay clear of this class while its online. The competitive grading scale is very harsh for the Kialo debate, especially since it is worth 20% of your grade. The grades were not dropped until the very end of the quarter, so we had no clear sense how we were doing.
This online class during covid was horrific. There was absolutely no specificity with regard to grading. And the group project was absolutely ridiculous as one person who makes a mistake could completely destroy your overall grade for a project thats worth 30%. I will never take his classes again.
His online classes in COVID are the worst. The TA's are hard graders and are often not even Communication Studies students. His class for COMM 133 and COMM 154 are formatted the EXACT same way. The worst part is the grading is unclear. You will be graded based on a competitive based grading system. Your grade will suffer outside of your effort.
He is very thoughtful and gives good lectures. There was a 2 pages paper, 1 midterm, 1 final and participation points. Not difficult overall. Don't just read the slides. Take notes!
I love Dr. Weber! He's great at making lecture fun and engaging. He's super knowledgeable and cares about his students. His slides were very informational and covered a lot of information on the test. His exams can be a bit tricky but if you study the slides & skim the textbook, you should get an A.
Dr. Weber is very knowledgable and respected in the Neuroscience field. I only went to the first 3 lecturers and got an A- on the midterm. 90% of the questions come from PP he puts in Gauchospace. The paper is fairly easy as well.
I took 2 summer comm classes with Dr. Weber, and he was overall a meh to mediocre professor. He goes off on tangents A LOT, and I expected to get more lecture on the MATERIAL, not his OPINIONS. He is not very good at answering student questions and comes off as condescending and judgmental. 1 MT, 1 Final, all based on lecture slides.
Professor Weber has been one of my favorite professor in the Comm department! He is good at connecting with students and his lectures make him seem like a normal guy, despite all his knowledge - seriously, he has a Ph.D. & M.D. His summer class was great and not too hard, he gave quite a bit of points for just coming to class. Highly recommend
Took both of his 3 week summer courses session G, and this guy is a real G, he's cooler then you'll ever be. Super qualified and intelligent, super nice guy as well. Really enthusiastic about his material and a trailblazer in his field. GO TO CLASS AND GET PARTICIPATION CREDIT. Final and midterm aren't too bad.
Weber is my favorite professor at UCSB! He is super nice and helpful. Took his summer session class and he made it bearable and fun. Tests are based on slides which are not that hard. Take his class if you're a comm major!
I just finished his class over summer. Didn't open the book once and used the slides for the study guides. Came out with a b+. definitely suggest taking this course if you want an easy a.
Great professor...took him for 3wk summer course.. I was a little nervous about taking a fast past course but he is extremely helpful...Also great during office hrs..easy to get an A-->attend lectures & rd the text (easy rding) quick review night before & you'll be fine...But attendance does count as he takes role everyday out loud
Prof. Weber ROCKS! He loves what he does and it really shows through his teaching style. You must take one of his classes before you graduate! His German accent adds to his appeal!
Horrible teaching methods, it was so hard to learn math ONLY through verbal lectures. rarely ever used whiteboard so you never got a visual, very impatient when students had questions. only learned in my section, so going to lecture was pointless. does not curve tests and then proceeded to complain about how bad his reviews are on here???
Took a very interesting 3 week class with Weber. Hes insanely passionate about the subject, which made it motivating for me. I really enjoyed this class, and wish it was longer because it felt rushed, but if you want to truly learn id recommend this prof.
One group project, one solo project, and one test. These are the only items in your grade book. The lectures do go on for a long time, sometimes more than necessary, but all of the material will be on the final exam at the end of the quarter.
Professor requires you to buy the textbook for $170 or $90 for the pdf version. He tells students that there is nothing he can do, but he is the one who wrote the textbook and chooses the text for the class. Very confusing lectures and does not explain the concepts as well as the TA. Shoutout to the TA or else no one would get through the class.
Professor Weber is definitely very kind and understanding, however I felt that he didn't convey the material and concepts very clearly. It was hard to understand at times -if you have no prior experience with statistics this class will be challenging for you. However, if you work and study hard on your own it's manageable.
Prof Weber is so cool and he really cares about the video game industry. He has personally been involved with studies in the field and has lots of experience. He talks clearly and is very thorough in his lectures. If you take notes during the lecture you won't have to read. Papers are easy and overall this class really isn't time consuming at all.
