Dr. Joseph structured his online course to make sure every student had the tools to succeed. Make sure you read the syllabus, do all the book problems, practice exams and go to office hours. If you do all of this, there will be no surprises in the exams! He is very helpful and understanding in office hours and gives partial points in exams.
joseph did the most during the pandemic out of any professor Ive had. He always makes himself available to students who reach out to him and he did everything himself, we never had to work through TAs. He really puts in the effort, which I appreciate because I had to put in so much effort for this class lol. It was hard but you get used to it
Joseph is a real chem angel, and his lectures are super easy to follow. Make sure to do textbook problems and put in some work though since his exams are difficult. Tests are fair though, and you should be fine if you stay focused!
Did IB Chem HL in Highschool which helped. Joseph is a solid choice for Chem1A. Aleks and Participation in video quizzes are very easy points (although Aleks was a pain). If you do book problems, midterms won't be a problem(got 96, 86, 80%)&he drops your lowest. Reused some problems in the final. The overall class average was 77%.
He is a really great professor! As long as you do the book problems you will be able to succeed in the class. Overall he is very fair and even gives partial credit on tests.
Very patient during office hours. Answered all of our questions step by step, making sure we understood everything. Even though this class was hard, he helped me work in the right direction.
Took AP Chem in high school and did poorly, took this class and got a 96.5% average on midterms (after one of them was dropped). Book problems are very important, but he tells you exactly what to expect on each midterm so there are no surprises. DO THE BOOK PROBLEMS and understand them fully. He is a very good & clear lecturer.
Prof Joseph is a great option for chem 1A. His lectures are khan academy quality, and he really cares about his students. His office hours are great. That being said, dont mistake his easygoing attitude for an easy class! I took honors & AP chem in HS and failed 2 out of 3 midterms. If you hope to pass spend AT LEAST 2 hrs a day on chem. good luck!
Prof Joseph led an amazing online class. Everything he said was explained very clearly. He helped me really understand chemistry. He is not a harsh grader. I was able to get partial credit on my online tests without even having to show work. He has about 6 10 minute lectures a week. I have him has my Chem 1B professor for next quarter!
Dr. Joseph is pretty good at lecturing, and he makes the basics of each concept seem easy. But we have to do a lot of problems from the book, which he never goes over and we have to figure out ourselves, and they are much harder. The tests are based off of those problems too, so the class is pretty difficult.
He has really good lectures, I never read the textbook, just did the book problems using what he taught us in the lectures and I was fine. As long as you do ALEKS and the book problems, you can get As on the midterms. He also gives a lot of partial points on tests which is nice.
He explains things very clearly and at a good pace. Many ppl struggled on exams saying that they weren't exactly like the book work, but if you have a good understanding of those concepts you'll be fine because he just stitches two ideas into the same problem. Drops your lowest exam, lots of partial credit, and your grade is curved.
I love Professor Joseph. He makes me laugh in class with his comments, and he's a really good teacher. I personally think Joseph is equal or better than Price. He covers everything is great detail, is very clear in his lectures, answers questions well, and really cares about your success in the class. BOOK PROBLEMS ARE A MUST THO.
Joseph is a great lecturer, but you will not do well if you solely depend on attending his lectures. Be sure to read the textbook (take additional notes, it helped me tremendously), ALL the book problems, and the practice tests he posts. Exams are hard and a time crunch. Very helpful during office hours and cares about his students.
Joseph is an engaging lecturer. His classes are organized and well thought out and he spells out what you need to do to be successful in his class from day one. He expects a lot, but I think that it prepares you for future upper-divs that ask more from students. If you put the time and effort in you will learn a lot!
easiest professor for chem 1a. I dont think I wouldve passed if I had taken another professor. I literally did the barest of barest minimum and still passed. maybe it helped that I remembered stuff from highschool chem. office hours are very helpful, just attend them.
Overall very nice professor. However, his quizzes and exams are way harder than other professor's exams. He now is teaching chem 1b and put both his Price's previous quiz questions. I can do almost all right with Professor Price's exam, but only half correct with his questions!!! All I can say is that the exams are very very hard.
I came into this course having only took IB chem sophomore yr of high school. I had trouble keeping up during lectures because he went pretty fast. Lots of topics are glossed over in lecture so reading is mandatory especially in the later chapters (12/13). Exams are concept based, don't rely on practice midterms.
Came in with very little chem experience. No AP Chem and this class crushed me. Quarter system already going 100 miles per hour and he would just skip over things easily because of time. Worked really hard, hours on top of hours. Do not even like chem it even a little bit and wanted to pass for my major but nope got a D- so I switched. Good luck!
Really tough teacher, pretty unforgiving of absences, but lecture is very helpful and clear. DO THE BOOK PROBLEMS. He reuses test questions so be very sure you understand every midterm question for the final. He also uses book problems on the tests so make sure you understand ALL of them. This class isn't impossible but it is very hard.
He is a great lecturer and is very clear about what he expects from his students. The course had a heavy workload but I felt adequately prepared for his quizzes and tests. He speaks loud and clear and is an all-around good choice for your first quarter of chem.
He is a nice teacher! The class is easy. Test and quiz are not hard. The only thing I dislike is the Online homework
He gives really informative lectures, and his tests are more conceptual rather than problem based. He's really accessible outside of class too! I was in his office at least once a week for Chem 1C. He takes the time to help his students and has opened up extra office hours to give everyone the opportunity to ask questions.
Dr. Joseph was awesome on explaining chem stuffs, but the homework on Aleks was a lot&boring. If u did SAT chem/AP chem this class would be fairly easy. Practice problems on textbook & previous exams with work-out help a lot so do these. Lectures worth attending if u are not sure about anything, as he's super helpful & amazing!
