Marcuse supplied us with some of the greatest readings I've ever had. That said, his lectures had little to no substance. Journals made me think and apply personal experience to class material. Hectic because of the strike, take this review with a grain of salt.
Taught the topic very well. Very insightful and presented different perspectives for the Holocaust. I really learned a lot and highly recommend this class. Just make sure to kept up with the readings.
This is a great class. There is a fair amount of work involved but nothing that is not necesary in order to learn the subject. Professor Marcuse is bery helpful all you have to do is ask for it and he will do whatever he can to help you!
Professor Marcuse uses iClicker! Often, his quizzes were worded in ways that were difficult to understand. He is empathetic towards his TAs, however, oftentimes they didn't have a lesson plan before section. The class is doable, but be sure to pay attention in the lecture despite how boring it can get. He appreciates feedback. Befriend your TA!
Professor Marcuse seems like a nice guy but is not so great at teaching. His lectures are boring and low-key pointless. It has gotten to the point where the TAs have to reteach the lectures and rewrite their versions of the assignment instructions. He isn't clear on instruction, and the TAs constantly apologize and seem defeated.
Really hated this class. Lectures were terribly boring, content was not presented in a way which was engaging whatsoever. Continuously changed grading deadlines all the way through half of the quarter. Projects were unnecessarily difficult and drawn out, and some TAs are extremely harsh graders without any good reason. Avoid this class at all costs
Uses iClicker for lectures but not geotagged so I didn't go to a single one (boring). 2 papers that are easy (summarizing primary sources and an oral history paper). You can watch a movie and respond or read the textbook and take a quiz every week for weekly grade, it's very easy. Content of class was cool but its a review from high school history.
His lectures were very boring and I did not pay attention the majority of the time. We had two papers (graded very easily) and one mid-term reflection and final. I took this class as part of my general ed, it is an easy A if you're only taking it for this purpose. The professor himself is super caring and nice, he cares a lot for his students.
Marcuse is extremely nice and accommodating. I found many of the assignments to be mere busy work, but I guess that makes sense since it's a GE. Take this class for an easy A.
I would not have taken this class if it was not a major requirement. The lectures were pointless as there were no tests and paper topics were done by your own research, so the only point of going was for the attendance grade. Grading was inconsistent and he often ran long on lectures and would ramble off topic.
Love Harold. What a nice guy with an interesting life that you can learn about through his personal website. That being said, his lectures are aimless and I haven't learned anything (its currently week 5). But the quizzes are easy, and there are no in person midterms/finals.
Take this class for an easy A if you need it because cancels out a lot GE requirements. I didn't pay attention at all, and all the quizzes you can search up on quizlet with multiple attempts. Yeah he's not a great prof but it's a GE class so I didn't really care if his teaching was good or bad.
Took this class as a GE so I already wasn't expecting to learn a lot of new stuff but I only learned from reading the textbook. Stopped going to lecture after the 3rd week and did i-Clicker from home but I heard he said the n-word in class, which is unacceptable. If you do the assignments you'll easily get an A.
Honestly not an incredibly difficult class, so definitely take it if you don't want a heavy course load, but he really is not a great professor. Super super disorganized and the content is all over the place, thankfully quizzes were online so they weren't difficult but if they were ever in person they would be. Lecture is mandatory (iclicker)
Unorganized and lectures were not well laid out however he is nice and understanding.
Disorganized, scattered, very boring lectures that are impossible to note take during. He also said the n-word during class which was disgusting. This is one of my least favorite classes I've taken at UCSB-if you have the option to do something else DO IT.
I typically don't mind poor professors, I just do my work and move on but this professor was appalling. He chose to read the n-word, out loud without warning. It is a history class, but there was zero reason for it. He has used multiple slurs as well. I have never been disgusted by a professor until now.
Marcuse was a massive disappointment. used n-word in class which is inappropriate in any context. Don't care if it's in an educational setting, hearing and seeing a white man use the n-word and be comfortable enough in himself to pronounce it out loud is concerning to say the VERY least. Hugely disrespectful.
One of the worst professors I have had. His lectures are extremely confusing and his content is all over the place. He is very disrespectful and has a condescending tone and even read n-word during a class lecture which reading a poem in class without any warning.
He is extremely disorganized and consistently ends lectures late. The course is supposed to be focused on research but he spends the entire class period either reviewing how to use library databases or rambling about his own research. Students quietly complain about the material in every lecture.
presents German history well. Lecture heavy but, interesting. Weekly reading/response assigments maybe 5 questions. Grades fairly but will take off points for late work. Requires a research paper, gives great feedback & chance to improve. If you do well enough on the paper your final will be only 4 IDs (you won't have to do the take home essay)
Marcuse was great. Really knowledgeable guy and his lectures were a lot of fun. Projects/assignments were also a lot of fun to do research on and I genuinely enjoyed doing them. Great guy and great class, I highly recommend.
The way the class was broken down made it possible to pass. His lectures are completely pointless, learned more from the textbook and wikipedia, but you have to go for iclicker points. Also the final is super dense (makes you study for 6 essays when there's only two on the test). Nice guy, just didn't learn anything valuable.
Extremely disorganized professor. Marcuse rambles in lecture and puts nonsense on the slides. There are 2 simple papers that are graded far too harshly for what they are (depends on TA, mine sucked). TA's are all very slow graders, multiple people complained during lecture. Grading scale is whack (a 90% on a paper is a B+).
