He would spend 50 minutes of class showing pointless graphs and would fall behind in his material every time. And his lectures would always end 5 minutes late. Not to mention he makes his finals extremely dense and his essay questions are extremely ambiguous
I would not recommend taking his classes. he is a very disorganized professor and his TAs are also the same way. bunch of assignments to do which never get graded. TA isn't helpful and honestly not even qualified. lectures are boring and he can never finish them on time. syllabus doesn't match the actual due dates. made me miss few assignments. bad
Marcuse's lectures are incredibly boring, and he teaches out of a high school level textbook. He assigns a lot of busy work, and his class seems a lot more like a class you would take in your freshman year of high school than at a university for $60,000 a year. Definitely wouldn't take again.
Professor Marcuse is a good professor but his lectures can be pretty boring. His class is pretty easy as long as you do the readings and go to lecture, you should be fine in the course. He does offer extra credit by attending history events or movie screenings. Overall I would recommend taking this class.
A solid choice for HIST 2C - he's a reasonable grader, doesn't make a lot of busy work, offers extra credit, and the subject is easy. His class only has a few papers to write, and as long as you read the textbook you'll be covered on the material and ready for the exams.
Professor Marcuse is probably one of the chillest professors I've taken so far. Although attendance is mandatory due to iClicker, you will only ever really need the book to complete the study guides before the midterm and final. 2 Papers but both relatively easy and did not require strenuous amounts of research, remember to do online quizze and you
Great guy but wished his lectures had more substance to the material. I also think this class should be 5.0 units because of the workload. Two textbooks to read, two big papers, quizzes every week, midterm, final, clicker questions. Super fair tests and gives a study guide. Don't fall behind & take SOLID notes from the readings and you'll do great.
Great guy. Lecture is boring and can be confusing with examples presented. Takes attendance with iclicker. Tests are short answer. Gives you IDs before the tests and chooses some of those given to you. Also gives some essay topics before exams. Understand concepts and define terms presented and you will do well.
He's an okay teacher but I found the lectures to be quite boring. The assignments weren't very difficult could be kind of dull. He also takes attendence with iclicker. He is a fair teacher, as he gives you a very extensive study guide, but I felt that he could enlivened the subject matter a bit more.
Ok so I am a history major so i actually needed this class and took it serious. So this professor sucks, i hate him. His lectures are pointless but he has clicker points so you need to go. Sections are a must because you get points. BUT it is a very easy class, 3 essays they are simple, the midterm and final are easy he prepares you for them.
Marcuse is the nicest guy! There were 2 essays, the first one was pretty tedious but the second was ok. My TA, Kali, was intimidating and not easily approachable. He does iclicker so it's best to go to class but you will learn majority from reading the book. Homework is only 5% so if you're taking the class PNP you don't really have to do it.
Prof. Marcuse is an extremely easy professor. I missed half the iCLicker points, turned in one essay half a week late, and completely bombed the final, and I still got a decent grade. His lecture is literally one of the worst experiences I've ever had at UC Santa Barbara, but at least he's a really nice person.
Marcuse is one of the most easygoing professors at UCSB. He gives you study guides with all of the questions that might be on the MT and final, and the papers weren't too bad (although the bibliography paper was pretty tedious). If you take it P/NP, it's the easiest thing in the world, no textbook needed. I recommend it for a great GE!
DO NOT TAKE HISTORY 2C. so boring. lecture is SO irrelevent. does give you a study guide for the midterm/final. first paper is stupid and irrelevant to the class. second paper, which was a family history paper, was okay.
Prof. Marcuse is awesome; his quirky teaching style, coupled with his cute fashion sense, make learning from him an entirely enjoyable experience. Reading was absolutely optional; he knew nobody was reading and would make jokes about it. Don't worry about getting on his bad side, because he really doesn't have one. A great guy and awesome professor
Marcuse is one of those guys who chances are is cooler than you. Did his bachelors in Physics and here he is teaching History, which he is excellent at. Great lectures and I liked how he has students do 8 mini assignments in place of a midterm. Assignments are usually very manageable and no reason why one should not do well in Marcuse's class.
His lectures are not really interesting, and his power point is pretty unorganized. He is a nice guy and gives out study guides for the tests, but he really needs to explain history in a more detailed way instead of in theory. High textbook usage.
Overall really nice guy who is very knowledgeable about his subject. The lectures can be a bit dry but the course was interesting and the textbook was good. The class it not that hard. There are two papers, two exams, and opportunities for extra credit. Attendance is mandatory. Only thing I didn't like was that it was at 8 in the morning.
Really nice guy but really boring lectures. The textbook is great but the narrative he assigns is boring AF! Overall the class is okay, not hard not easy.
very nice guy. tries really hard to make lecture interesting.
It takes a lot to put me to sleep in a history class. But somehow, Professor Marcuse managed to do it. Definitely wouldn't recommend taking a class from him.
Marcuse's lectures can be pretty dull in the first half of the class, and he started using iclickers. There is a lot of work that goes into the class, 2 essays, a long midterm, and the final is a pain in the ass. If you actually read the textbook you will do fine, though. But there's a lot of reading.
Professor Marcuse is an extremely FAIR professor. He cares about his students and does a lot to help them out. He's definitely interested in what the students think and wants a lot of input. Good class. Really nice professor. Not the type of professor who enjoys torturing students.
Very enthusiastic. Class was a little wobbly at times (unsure what was going on) but he was very encouraging and helpful.
