OBSESSED w/ attendance. 2 sign in sheets & sometimes ALSO took roll out loud. 3 hr class & we never get out on time. expects us to already know a lot of the material. he & the TAs grade harshly. had to turn in a paper before he even taught us the relevant info bc he included too many topics in the course. 5 quizzes, 4 papers, no exams.
He has a serious problem with attendance and was so paranoid with it that I got scared at times. Felt he wasn't for his students but was always trying to find a way to make us lose points (said quiz will be in the beg. of class and bc a lot of students left, gave a OPEN BOOK quiz at the end) I mean who does that? Had high hopes for this class :(
If you want an armchair professor take someone else Dr. Robinson is an activist and any true Sociologist can appriaciate that. He truly changed my life.
AMAZING! such a passionate professor. made me want to get involved with activism on such a higher level! i would take any class he offered at UCSB.
He is the best professor at UCSB no make that EVER- he is very intelligent and passionate, I wish their were more professors like him!!!
I wish I could take another class with him before a graduate but it doesn't look like I will be able to. He is one of the gems at UCSB. He teaches because he wants students to keep the information for life and use it everyday rather than giving students random useless work. He is WONDERFUL!
Go to lectures and do the reading and you will get a good grade and learn something vastly different than ever before. He is a life changing professor, I wish I had taken a class with him earlier. He is very helpful and clarifies until everyone in the class understands. 1 to 2 pg paper every week, random short quizzes only a question or 2.
Take him you won't regret it!!!
GREAT GREAT GREAT. This professor is so helpful, he is always there for his students. There are random pop quizzes and there is a paper due every week. However the quiz is a piece of cake and the papers are graded very fairly. As long as you get the key ideas across you are golden. I wish I could take him again but he is not teaching right now.
had him for soc 130LA, structure is good, no real exams... "pop" quizes on the reading-- 4 very easy and simple if u read. Nothing is particularly hard about this class but his lectures are very dry and he likes to keep you after class... be warned also sidetracks a lot. Slides are online.. only go to lecture cuz he takes roll othrwise its useless
This has been one of the best professors I've ever had. He is an eye opener. I have taken two classes with him and I've gotten A's on both. He gives interesting topics. If you do the readings you'll do fine and the quizzes are easy. His lectures really interested me and made me not want to miss class. Take him, he?s a good instructor. I highly re
I really liked this class and learned a lot about the world that I didn't know. If you take it, do the readings before class-the quizzes are based on them. Lots of briefs to write based on the books and lectures. Teacher talks kind of fast at times but is an interesting and dynamic speaker who is well informed in the subject.
Amazing professor, very knowledgeable about his field. Class is fun because there are no tests, just 4 easy quizzes on the reading. 4 Papers about different reading assignments. Great class!
This professor in amazing and among the best ones I've had. Extremely knowledgable and although class is 3 hours, he keeps my interest up. Fair, easy grading and quizzes will be OK if you do the reading. Papers are interesting and so are the films shown in class. Excellent!
Be prepared read many books in this class (esp grad level) and prior knowledge of sociology theories are not required but very useful. While people disagree with teaching method, he has modified it based on students input. This is the perfect class for someone who loves passionate professors who will clarify anything upon request.
Lots of reading but I learned so much in this class. Can be a bit dry but if you see beneath the surface and really listen you'll learn so much. Long class, 3 hour night class. Usually will let you out early if everyone is good.
The class was boring, the lectures were too long, and the grading was very unfair. He is not an understanding professor. I did not need to read all the books he assigned. Quizzes were not graded fairly, and were tricky. Questions were not specific.
Great Professor! His lectures may not be as clear or interesting as they could be but his films are awsome and you learn a lot from his class. The only thing I didn't like was that you get your TA based on your last name and one TA grades harder than the other.
I really enjoyed this class. Robinson explained things very clearly and the material was very interesting and relevant to current global issues. The 3 hour classes flew by, especially cause there is a film for half of it.He also mentioned other parts of the world which I thought was imporant.I definitely recommend this class!!
Easy, great learning experience
Welcome Nicaragua really bad spanish accent to Rico Suave... The leather jacket and beard were deceiving for a soft spoken, couldnt hear half the crap he mumbled about in class kinda guy. if u were there the year he held the GLOBALIZATION CONFERENCE, it was probably the most useful source of information ever, but as for a prof... he is rather monotanous and full of himself
Exemplary teacher, and person. Take him. His classes matter. It was not a difficult class, but I learned more in it about how the world works than perhaps in any class. He is fair and democratic. He wants you to do well, in life, and as a student. I only wish there were more professors as dedicated as he.
Why does he not have HOT status? I learned a great deal in his class. By far one of the best profs. in his area, oh, and fine to look at as well
This class was the most boring class I have ever taken. He just repeated everything he said in other 3 hour long classes...
