That class itself is very reading heavy and the lectures are mandatory. Professor if very dogmatic about attendance (iClicker 2-3 times per lecture). no phones or laptops to take notes. Weekly essay reflections of 1000+ words. No exams only writing and LOTS of it.
100+ pages of reading and 1000 words due per week. Was the most difficult class I took online. He was not accommodating despite difficult circumstances. Talks about himself a lot.
Kicked someone out of class for sleeping. Will not allow laptops or phone use. No flexibility and completely unaccommodating. Awful class by an awful person. Makes u buy the textbook he wrote
Professor Robinson clearly structured his class and it was an overall easy course. We had weekly reflections of a min of 1,000 words and they're super easy if you do the reading. A lot of books were require but there are a lot of free online options. This was one of the easier courses taken at ucsb and I learned a lot.
I hated the man, but content-wise, this class is one of the best I have ever taken. This class honestly radicalized me, which I'm thankful for and wouldn't take back. But I'd never do it again! His lectures were mediocre, he talked too fast and his ego really annoyed me. The least accomodating professor I've ever had. Insane amount of reading/work.
Professor Robinson is definitely one of my favorite professors at UCSB. He is so knowledgeable with different perspectives. The class is not mandatory, however, I strongly recommend you to attend it since the lecture was not been recording (slides were posted on GS). Besides, get ready for tremendous readings and writings, not an easy A class.
This professor clearly has a huge ego problem and was very unaccommodating towards students. That being said, he taught me more than I have ever learned in a class. He truly broadened my perspective every lecture and I looked forward to going to class, which I never had felt before. A lot of work but readings can be skimmed.
Lectures great. Readings fantastic. Assignments meaningless, had no educational value. TA's graded inconsistently. Lectures weren't recorded so good luck part-time workers, parents, and other timezones. 7 questions from students posted online left ignored with 0 replies from as early as Nov 11 (30 days with still no TA or prof responses).
If youre one to complain about workload, this class isnt for you. Otherwise, he will definitely challenge you not just in terms of material, but how much you can handle. It was a lot of work but what you get out of this class is amazing & worth learning. Hes very passionate and if you wanna learn about the flaws of capitalism this class is it.
I'm sorry but requiring a documentary, three hour lecture, a full book, and a 2 page single spaced paper every week is ridiculous. This is the worst class ive ever taken. He won't record the lectures so if you cant make it you are screwed. Students told him that it was a lot of work to handle and he basically said i get that, but im not changing it
Prof is opinionated and gives a one sided perspective of anticapitalism in his class. He requires a weekly 1000 word reflection on the lecture, reading and film watched for the week. He makes his expectations clear from the beginning. The class shouldnt be taken by avid complainers. It is difficult, but it is a UD course at a UC. He knows his stuff
required lots of books to read every wk there's a reflection - 2pgs, single spaced, about 1000 words used to be 2 full pgs, but changed after students explained how stressful it was; 2 essays, lectures ONLY live talks fast powerpoints posted, TA's were more accommodating, the only way im passing is by sharing lec & book notes w other students
Unaccomdating. Even with students collectively emailing him about the course, students are ignored. Overworked and excessive reading. One essay a week.
My third class with Prof Robinson and his online classes are bad_ Lectures and readings, fantastic_ tack-sharp and answers questions like a fax machine_Two TA's grade differently, communication is on a per-student basis_I need a spot in the asylum if I'm writing the same 8 1000+ word ramblings about global capitalism with only vague topics to go by
professor robinson is less than accommodating. his online courses expect you to read well over 100pages a week, attend a three hour lecture, and write a 1500 word paper each week. if you're looking for an easy A, this class is NOT it. he won't even let you email him, let alone hear you out about your concerns.
Worst class ever. Professor who doesn't care about his students at all.
It's true that he assigns a lot of reading and papers but they are graded liberally and you get a lot out of the readings. By far my favorite professor. He genuinely cares about his classes so much and exposes you to the reality of our world's problems. 10/10 recommend.
Robinson is one of the most intelligent and entertaining professors I have had at UCSB thus far. He assigns quite a bit of reading and writing assignments, which can be stressful but never insanely dense. This class was 3 hours long yet he somehow always kept my attention the entire 3 hours, I think that says enough about how great of a prof he is.
Professor Robinson is amazing in that he provides a completely different yet accurate analyses and perspective on capitalism. He sounds opinionated, but 100% of what he says are literal facts and statistics he pulls out of studies. Attendance through iClicker but class was 1x/week so not asking for too much. Reading heavy (but fun) +powerful films.
This is teachers probably the most cutthroat teacher on campus. Does not care about the students one bit when it comes to lectures. Participation is based on clickers and he does multiple clicks throughout the class, and if you miss ONE of those clicks, you get an absent for the day, no excuses. barely extra credit and doesnt care for your success
a good lecturer, 3 hr classes fly by. However, he claims to be a socialist yet is very punitive and requires notes from doctors in order to get extensions. News flash, not everyone has access to health insurance. Calls out/kicks students out for falling asleep in lecture, failing to realize most students have jobs & are tired for 7-10pm class.
I feel like Prof Robinson was the first to make me feel like I actually LEARNED. He does a weekly reflection on readings, 3 short papers and a lengthy final. (he also offers extra credit) The lecture was 3 hours but it was half lecture, half documentary WHICH were super interesting. I literally see the world different. Loved this class!
Amazing professor! I've taken 130SG, 130LA, and 130GR with him. Kind of disappointed he doesn't teach more undergrad courses. You'll have to skim the readings and pinpoint the main ideas. Gives great alternative points to generally held truths in society. Definitely won't regret taking his courses !
Robinson was very opinionated about his socialist beliefs, but he did encourage class discussion. Class was diverse with different materials (articles, videos, lecture materials, guest speakers). There are no tests, but LOTS of essays and readings. I did learn a lot from this class, but wish it had more viewpoints.
