Rome: The Game was fun, but it really depends on what TA you get. Devris encouraged you to be creative and have fun with the assignments, but he graded pretty harshly. You probably won't have the same problem, though. The professors themselves were really nice.
Professor moser likes her subject and likes to get students to think critically about archaeology. The assignment requirements can be vague but she's not a hard grader. I recommend doing the readings because she likes to ask questions to the class.
I enjoyed playing the game. Lots of reading. Professor's explanations throughout the games were fun. However, the TAs were tough graders, specifically my TA. Explanations during sections did not make sense and he would ramble about useless things. I asked for feedbacks as well because he gave me such a low grade on my final but I was ignored.
Rome the game was a super interesting class that used a choose your own adventure style that was pretty easy. The readings were dense and often contained useless info. You couldn't backtrack the reading which was annoying. TAs were tough graders on assignments and participation as well. Instructions were really vague for final paper and assignments
DO NOT TAKE. It was extremely difficult. The midterm had no study guide, just our notes, was super tricky, and based on SUCH granular information. 4 pop quizzes, a ton of reading, midterm, final paper, and a group project. I had a 4.0, its my last year, and I failed my midterm. Now I have to retake an arthi class. BS.
Prof. Moser is the best!! I have taken two of her art history classes and both have been so interesting. She makes lectures engaging and finds a way to change the traditional classroom. Our final was a short paper and a historical reenactment of an ancient spectacle. She did assign 4 pop quizzes but they were fairly easy.
I never actually met Professor Moser since the course was formatted as a "choose your own adventure" type game, but I really enjoyed this course. It was probably about an hour or two of reading and writing every week, with one weekly TA section. My TA was knowledgeable and helpful, and I would definitely recommend this course as a fun GE to take!
The class is an online choose your own adventure type game which was very interesting and lots of fun. Lots of reading involved, though a majority of it is from the story and it's very easy, readings outside the game have sections crossed out if they aren't necessary which is helpful. Attend sections, TA I had was a little rude. Fun class overall.
I really enjoyed this class with Prof Moser. Very easy and clear when it comes to grading and assignments. The format was really fun but covered a lot of material at which you can pace out. Weekly short assignments, a timed midterm, and a final paper (fairly easy). Prof Moser is a lovely and caring individual. Take her if you can!
I love how Professor Moser made the content into "choose your adventure game!" It makes the material much more exciting to learn! Take notes on the readings since the midterm is timed. Attend all sections and turn in the writing assignments (around 300 words every week) on time. Paper isn't too difficult. Other than that, this is a very easy class!
I just show up to the section make a couple comments here and there in the group activities, complete all the straightforward writing assignments, just light prep before the midterm, prepped for a short presentation with 2 images, and did the final essay based off the notes I took in section presentation and get an A-. So yeah, it was not too bad.
Easiest class I've taken so far.
I never saw much of Prof Moser, the format of the class was like an online "game" with embedded readings. However I really enjoyed how she set up the class for online school, and my TA was great and the sections were lighthearted and chill. Easy class but ended up with a B+ because most of your grade is from writing midterm and final papers.
Words cannot describe how grateful I am to this professor. For our online class during covid, she and the other professor created a choose your own adventure game for us to play while learning the material. It made this quarter an amazing experience.
Great professor. Need to take good notes on the lecture. A lot of memorization needed for the exams. There was one paper with 2 really fun prompts to choose from so it was enjoyable.
She is very passionate about the subject which makes lectures slightly better, but overall they are incredibly dry and boring. The tests are straightforward and taken from lecture material.
Passionate professor. Clearly loves what she does. Amazing lecture, if you're into art history. Otherwise very boring but with a few phallic objects and whatnot every once in a while. The only participation by what seems to be her honors section. Gives EXACTLY what's going to be on the exams before. Essay was kind of silly/okay. Fine class for a GE
Really good professor. Tests were long but fair.
For the midterm, there is one in class exam and one essay. Prof Moser gives you the study guide ahead of time so you will know what questions will show up. The exams will involve images discussed in class and you'll need to write a short description about it. Class is graded on improvement so do your best. Make sure to go to class for iclickers!
Professor is passionate about the subject and about helping students but her slides have very little information on them and material covered per day is long, therefore difficult to follow. Slides are NOT posted. Midterm and Final are key to passing. She says they are easy but detailed information is needed for short answers and the essay question.
Great professor! The textbook was never really mandatory, but was definitely helpful to have background knowledge for lecture. Midterm and final were clearly outlined, and grading was done fairly. If you don't already know how to write academically, work on it- midterm and final include essays. Lectures engaging & iClicker used to take attendance.
This was my first quarter at UCSB and I really loved professor Mosers class. I was nervous to be in such a big lecture hall but, her lectures were amazing! She likes to engage with her students and makes sure she gets to everyones questions. She really cares about students and always wants feedback. Id take another class with her again!
Good, clear lecturer, although the content can be really boring. You don't need to do the reading to pass. Paper topic was kind of hard because it was so silly. Section homework assignments were super confusing. Easy pass.
lectures were interesting and very clear, moser is obviously passionate and cares about her students learning. reading is not mandatory as you are only tested on what is said in lectures, but i felt as if reading beforehand allowed me to zone out every so often (there's not too much to read). Midterm, 1800 word paper, and a final-- all were easy.
