The professor has been audited three times. They use a Chinese textbook, but does not explain anything in the given English textbook. They are incredibly rude and when a student asked a question in class about a topic, they responded later in an email to everyone, saying "Why would anyone think [that]". Avoid at all costs. Atrocious.

Professor makes a bad first impression, was tempted to drop on first day. But, his accent is only a problem the first day, and he teaches things very clearly. You can choose to have homework included if it benefits your grade. Very comforting environment, ended up really enjoying the class and it really changed the way I think.

Pretty bad lecturer and the slides he has posted are from previous years and don't always match up with what he covered in class. There are two midterms, lowest is dropped. Lowest homework is dropped. Midterms and the final were really easy though. Easy class but poor prof IMO.

His lectures were pretty scattered and not super worth going to. He also writes out a bunch of problems and concepts but his handwriting is almost completely illegible. I had to teach myself almost all of it but the TAs had very useful resources.

He wasn't the worst that's for sure. In fact his lectures were good for the first half of the course. His lectures at the very end were kind of all over the place. His tests were pretty fair, but he constantly didn't follow the lecture slides and was unclear about certain expectations. It's a test heavy class, but doable.

Stopped going to lecture after week 2 because I couldn't understand a word he said. Has a thick accent, mumbles, and his handwriting is illegible. The only good thing about this class was the TAs and the slides they posted bc all the slides from the prof were entirely unhelpful. Tests were super easy but you won't actually learn anything.

Honestly not too bad. His handwriting kind of sucks, but if you show up to every lecture you can get a pretty good idea of what's going on. Graded by 2 midterms (with one score dropped) and a final, which ended up being a copy paste of said midterms. Just show up to every lecture and it's a pretty easy class.

Bad handwriting and didnt test on a lot of ODE topics. MCQ only tests

MATH4B . Yang Xu 14 Days Ago

Tests are all multiple choice because they don't want to hand grade anything. The final contained the exact same questions as the midterms, which does make them easier, but does not at all test actual knowledge.

Exams are challenging bc its all MCQs (10 for two midterms and 20 for final) and have lots of questions that need one page of scratch work to get the answer. The professor is nice but has a heavy accent and incomprehensible handwriting, so it's hard to follow during lectures, which means you have to put in a lot of work for this class to do well.

two midterms, one is dropped but answers only made available for midterm 2 and not 1. final is worth 50%. lectures are uploaded from around covid times so they're not the same as ones in class. not sure how i did in the class but before the final, had a ~85%. scared final dropped me down very low. you're going to have to teach yourself everything.

Drops the lowest hw, 2 midterms but lowest one dropped, but final was worth 50%. A little hard to understand the material without the TA's help. Have to do lots of studying on your own but 4B doesn't have hard topics so it is manageable. his uploaded lectures are not the exact same as the ones he goes over in class, they're just for reference.

Lectures/content from Yang are very disconnected from the rest of the Math 4B lectures. He focuses on proving solution methods for differential equations rather than teaching about their applications. He never posts anything online aside from homework assignments and some announcements, so don't expect any public lesson plans. Do not take.

I honestly should've switched out of his course after reading the reviews. He does not have structure in his class. He also doesn't have anything on the canvas page only the syllabus which doesn't seem to say much. I didn't know what was expected and honestly, learned more from the TA than him.

I've taken Diff Eq in high school, with an A+. Fengrui doesn't grade homework, use a textbook, or give directions on exams. He clearly has no interest in teaching and shouldn't have a teaching position at any university. He displays an appalling disregard for his students' education. He simply doesn't care. His Canvas page is also completely blank.

Fengrui doesn't give relevant lectures, he's impossible to understand, doesn't put relevant directions on exams, doesn't grade homework. Also, no test rubrics. On the 4b midterm, he stopped everyone halfway through to say that we have to derive how to solve second-order differential equations (cannot receive credit for using the characteristic).

Number 1 Rule if you are taking his class: attend every lecture. all of the problems on the midterm/final were examples or proofs in lecture/homework. No outline for the course, no syllabus, heavy chinese accent but you get used to it. Everyone bombed the midterm, but you'll do well on the final if you just study his lecture problems/homework.

Nobody can understand what he is saying, and it's pretty clear to see that everything he's saying and writing is incomprehensive, especially when he writes with such a light marker and constantly erases the board that has material that he said we HAVE TO KNOW. The material taught was a joke, didn't prepare me for the midterm or final at all.

Proofs on lower division tests making up nearly 50% of the test grades. Not only that, he isn't teaching the material at all. Students don't learn laplace transforms, that total derivatives are represented as matrices, optimization of volume, and other crucial things. They just know how to memorize is proofs. This is both useless and unfair.
