COMM188 was one of the most memorable classes I've taken at UCSB. Professor Lane and TA were very accessible if you ever needed help. Take the class, you will not regret it!

Dr. Lane is very well-spoken and has put a lot of time and effort into this course. I took it as a summer course and while it was accelerated, I learned so much valuable information in this class. With interesting topics and straightforward video lectures, this class and professor are A+ quality.

The format of this course is a little weird (feels like you are doing busywork for Weeks 1-8, then things get really intense at the end), but it ends up being pretty balanced and informative. Lane manages the group project really well and make sure to hold group members accountable. Expect weekly homework assignments + four question quizzes.

Professor Lane's class was extremely interesting and he cares a lot about his students! This is a group project class though so be prepared for that, but he gives you ample of class time to work on everything. Would highly recommend.

I liked Prof Lane's course and it was a class I still enjoyed based on potential learning outcomes. A midterm exam was slightly challenging, luckily, there was extra credit assigned for everyone to improve.

Taken at UC Santa Cruz. Jiayin is a hilarious professor during lectures, who understands the pain that math can be. Very thorough and understandable lectures where he goes over proofs and practice problems and posts notes after each lecture so they are optional. Very accommodating outside of lecture too, and a Pokemon fan!

Lectures just made the class more confusing. Didn't have a clear rubric for the group projects, which really impact your grade. However, the exams are fair and very similar to the homework. Good curve. Khan academy and TAs saved me.

I LOVED Professor Lane. Yes this is a hard class but he makes it better. For the final paper, make sure to utilize your TA's for help as they are the ones who grade the papers. I ended up getting a 98 on the final paper as I used the advice given to me by my TA. Loved this class.

class involved a couple lecture videos and one in-person lecture a week (plus section). dr. lane's lectures are honestly funny and interesting, and the midterm and final exams are not difficult as long as you actually watch the lecture vids.

Dan lane is the best comm 89 professor! the class is still difficult but posts the lectures on canvas and an easy quiz in class every week. Midterm and final in class. 1 Essay. Love Dan Lane!

Not a good prof, lecture videos arent very helpful & class lectures arent posted so you really have to listen to gain information, which is difficult if you're a visual/hands-on learner. He was insanely inaccessible & if you had a question, he would dismiss you & tell you to talk to the TA. Like dude, YOURE the professor. Overall, did not like him.

Lectures were very inconsistent, sometimes they were extremely clear and useful, and sometimes they were unorganized and circled around the same point never illuminating the topic. Grading criteria is very unclear for projects, multiple times points were taken off for criterion not mentioned in the rubric. Overall okay, avoid if is possible.

The final and m.t were insanely hard. The grades received were unexpected for amount of studying for these tests. No study guides at all "canvas is your study guide". Was accessible up until one week before the final and the essay, understandable but not responding when students need last min help isn't chill. Start studying WEEKS prior to tests.

Lane is probably the best prof I've had at UCSB! Though, his tests are very hard and require lots of preparation. He is a great lecturer and is super accessible. Really wish he would provide a study guide or sample questions to guide studying. I was very unprepared for midterm.

He seemed like a nice guy overall but he really tried to trick us on exams. He used confusing wording and trick questions. This overall made it very hard to learn and grasp the concepts. He did not provide study guides for the exams making it very hard to study. Overall, if you don't have to take 89 with him, please don't for your own sake.

Took his linear algebra course at UCSC. He's funny af, but isn't good at teaching. You're better off learning from YouTube videos. Grading was 30% Hw, 15% projects, 15% midterm, 30% final, 10% quizzes. Hw is hard and time consuming. Tests are in person and LONG. Take a different professor

i took pan at ucsc winter quarter for linear algebra. im warning u to not take this guy. hes nice and can be funny, but his lectures are incredibly unstructured and unorganized. you literally wont know what hes covering because he wont specify. i learned more and better from watching 12 minute youtube videos. only thing he did right was the curve.

Took Math 21 with this professor at ucsc. The lectures aren't even worth going to, exams are easy if you study but you probably won't take away much from the class. Generous weighting (15 midterm 30 final 55 else). Curve hasn't been applied but iirc averages to 83%. Don't take if u don't have to but if u do it's not all that bad.

prof lane has great lecture videos online that provide tons of example to help understand the material. but his midterm and final were so tricky and so hard. the wording was just weird and a LOT of us had a very hard time understanding. just get ready to read a lot and to watch a lot of lectures over and over again to fully understand the material

Math 21 at UCSC. Avoid at all costs. Lectures are mind-numbingly boring and completely unstructured so it's very difficult to get anything out of them. Average score on the midterm was a 66%. Group projects didn't have clear grading criteria, had to contact the prof directly, he gave us the okay and we still got a bad grade. He seems nice, though.

His wordings are so tricky on both midterm and final. I would say the tests were extremely difficult. The average was really low but he curved it.
