Graded by two papers, midterm, and final exam. Exams were definitely tricky, so study up and ask questions. Definitely attend lecture, as slides alone aren't enough to be prepared for the exams. She's super caring, kind, and accessible. Grading criteria is clear for papers, and asking the TA for help is a good way to be prepared.
Dr. Afifi is great! She cares a lot about her students. We had a midterm and a final (non cumulative) and two essays.
She really cares about her students, papers and tests questions are fair, she makes her lectures easy to follow
Professor Afifi was amazing for Family Comm!!! I learned so much in this course about the family dynamic, parent-child relationship development, and gained a lot of useful tips for healthy/happy relationships. Best and most beneficial Comm class in my opinion. Take this course!
Took her on last summer. The class content is super interesting, and her lectures are great.
Best professor I've ever had, hands down. I never leave reviews but I just had to for Afifi. If you have the chance to take any of her classes, do it! Her lectures are relatable and applicable in real life. She's super nice and you can tell she's really passionate about what she does!
I took her family comm and relational comm last year. I LOVE her lectures and personality too. If you study, you can get a good grade. Study hard and enjoy her amazing lectures!
Very friendly. I took her 3 week family comm summer class so we had 2 exams and a paper. A lot of the material on the test was straight from the powerpoint slides, which she provided. I found the tests to be challenging.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! I love her, she is perfect. Her family comm class is so interesting, and she's so nice and understanding! There were two papers, one 3 page, one 7, which was kind of difficult but REALLY interesting. Her tests were straight forward and not tricky! She is by far one of the best professors in the comm department :)
Loved the class, but she was a tough professor. Engaging and helpful, but tests were difficult and the paper required hours of work (interviewing both parents plus outside research). Read the textbook and all articles in order to pass the tests. Attendance is mandatory and she gives out extra credit.
She's a cheery woman who is very open to discussion in class. Lecture can be boring at times since she talks a lot. Midterm is okay if you study her Powerpoint slides. There is a small essay and also a major turning point paper worth nearly half of your grade that requires interviewing your parents and filling out graphs. Class overall is okay
Loved this class
Tammy is such an awesome professor. MY FAVE! Her tests were not that bad if you attend lecture and skim through the readings. The topics are interesting so it helps. LOVE HER..GO TO OFFICE HOURS and chat! She is funny & interesting.
She is a very nice and fun person, but I didn't think her class was necessarily easy. Her assignments take a lot of work (i.e., in-depth interviews of your family, videotaping a conflict, etc.), however you do gain a lot from her classes!
She is the BEST! The class was very interesting and fun. Loved her sense of humor. Two papers, midterm, and final.
Tammy is the best professor ever! Her classes are very interesting and easy to understand. She truly cares about her students and does the best to make you succeed in class! You won't regret taking her classes! I wish there were more professors like he in the department.
Took both 124 and 151 with her, and she is WONDERFUL! She is a great teacher and she really cares about her students. Her lectures and tests are very straightforward. Watch out for the paper, though - if you don't have good sources, she'll mark you down!
Tammy is by far the best teacher in the Communication Department at UCSB! I have never had a professor who cared so much about how I did in a class. Her exams and papers are challenging, so study hard. She also leads great class discussions. Taking a "Tammy Afifi" class should be mandatory for ALL undergrads! Best of luck!
Tammy is an awesome professor and very passionate in teaching. I only had her for a 3-wk summer session so it was pretty fast pased & atendance counted, but pay attn, study the slides...you'll for sure pass.she is very helpful if you have any ?s
very good teacher. makes you interested in the subject. took it in the intensive 3 week course in the summer and i loved it! no need for the book and still got an A on the midterm/final. would definitely take another course with her!
Great teacher... she really cares about how you do in her class. The tests are pretty easy (multiple choice and essay)... but the final paper is kind of hard. Going to office hours definitely helps.
Very knowledgable and enthusiastic, but lectures are very detailed, and she has way too much info on her ppt slides. Paper is tedious and boring to write (lit review is really long). Hard grader. Class size was too big.
tammy is fabulous. her class is pretty easy, just make sure you go.
A great class with relevant applications for getting the most out of your internship. Not too much reading, no exams, and simple papers. Created an e-portfolio which was very useful. Brought outstanding speakers to give insight on real-world professionals. Very caring and brought us cookies :)
