This class has so much potential but the structure is very frustrating. Lectures are just random theories and information and she just reads off slides and is a boring lecturer. Group project isn't too difficult depending on group but if you have a bad group it could be hard. The class doesn't seem to have a clear goal
Professor Young Ji Kim is very understandable and caring. She responds by email but is best to meet in person. Class is weighed heavily on group project (40%) that is randomly assigned. The midterm (20%) and final (25%) are somewhat very difficult as you need to understand readings and class concepts to do well. Dense material and info overload.
Took comm 191 with Kim and she was the best. Its an internship course where you have to get an internship on your own outside of class and the lecture meets once a week for 2hrs. She brings in guest lecturers to speak. Super practical class to get you ready for workplace. Final project was updating our LinkedIn, cover letters, resumes, etc.
She responds to emails quickly and the class itself was straightforward. I'd recommend putting in effort for the group project and knowing what exactly it entails (office hrs helps) bc it can definitely carry your grade! She's really sweet and accessible.
Professor is really nice and welcoming. Showing up to class is about 25-30% of your grade. Readings are assigned on canvas but no textbook. There's one midterm, final and a group project which is worth 30% of your grade.
She's amazing!! Super caring and makes class extremely interesting. Take her class
I hope she reads this cause I genuinely don't understand why she is so bad at replying to emails. Especially since this is the type of class that you need to communicate back and forth with her with.
Material was interesting but I didn't like how the assignments were weighted. 60% of your grade is based off essays (final research paper, article critique, essay on midterm) and IMO were graded harshly. Exams cover a lot of material, and are application based, but easy if you study and attend lecture. A's on both exams but B+ in class bc of essays
I enjoyed Professor Afifi a lot in Comm 151. She is so genuine and personable, and you can tell she really loves what she teaches and cares for her students. My only thing is that I feel like you are expected to cover waaaay too much content compared to other classes and have it all memorized for tests. Other than that, she is a great teacher.
Midterm is challenging. The average score is quite low! The lecture is funny but a few tricky questions in the exam. Most multiple choices are like "A, B, C are correct" or "All of the above" which increase the difficulty. The short essay was strictly graded. You need to come up with well-rounded statement and good elaboration in limited time.
Such an amazing professor! She gave asynchronous classes and was so great. She was extremely passionate about her area of study. Had almost weekly quizzes that were pretty easy and two group essays. Highly recommend
Weekly quizzes and forums with 1 response to peers. Pretty straightforward, I suggest watching lectures and skim readings and using your "resources." She may drop your lowest quiz score to balance out your grade which is nice. Also if you need an extension, just ask.
Afifi has been my favorite teacher at UCSB so far. She's so friendly and approachable. lectures are always entertaining. If you go to class, and pay attention you'll pass
Best prof I've had here Funny, engaging, interesting material, and fair grader. Her classes usually have a midterm, a final, and a paper or 2 but it's all based on interesting material that you apply to your own life Had her for Relational Comm and Family Comm
Great professor!
Affifi is hands down my favorite professor. I would recommend her Conflict class and Family class to anyone. You do need to do the work, but the tests and class are fair. Take her class before she leaves UCSB! You won't regret it!
Prof. Afifi is a quirky woman. She is very hot and has a good sense of humor. She makes class fun by telling stories about her family and engaging her students. Attendence is mandatory (you can only miss 2 classes without penalty). 2 papers and 2 tests. Papers are kind of tough. Tests are easy. Book is not necessary. Would recommend for COMM majors
Absolutely loved this class! She is an amazing professor (best I've had thus far). Encourages class discussion and is always willing to help or just chat. Material is super interesting and applicable to life which is a plus. Tests are fair... pretty easy if you take really good notes and skim the reading. 2 tests (final not cumulative) and 2 papers
Hands down the best professor at UCSB. Always willing to help and is one of the nicest people I've ever met.
