Dont' take it. Not an easy GE at ALL. The TAs graded all assignments centered around a B. Not a GPA booster class at all. Tons of reading. Terrible experiences
Having a passion for the literature makes this class a 5. Prof is very nice cares about what she teaches. Short quiz in section every week with 4 writing assignments making up your grade (with an optional final!). TA grades everything. Overall, it is an easy GE with a nice prof who is not strict-- and you can't go wrong with that.
No midterm and optional final, class is graded by section and 4 close readings. Prof Ninh is a passionate and amazing lecturer and she WILL remember everyone (by name) who speaks to her. Books are dense, but her lectures clear many thing up. TAs are also very sweet and will help. Attend Section!!!! (and lecture) Also easier GE for ethnicity req.
Needlessly confusing lecturer. I never went to lecture just because they were so incomprehensible. The grade was really just section attendance and 4 written assignments (not essays, but they were still tough and had very poor direction). Only saving grace is generous grading scheme. I loved my TA though; the TA makes the class.
She overcomplicates things in lecture and it almost seems like shes trying to prove how intelligent she is. Shes super vague about whats expected of us for assignments, and she literally wants us to regurgitate what she says during lecture. Way too much work for a GE. Books are interesting though.
Extremely intelligent and insightful. Very inspiring. She even remembers names of people who answer questions. Loved her lectures, though they were dense. She doesn't post slides online. Class wasn't ridiculously hard, but definitely harder than Pandya's version and it might be more work than you're willing to put in for a GE.
even though the lecture was not mandatory, she never put powerpoint on the gauchospace, so you still have to go to lecture. Midterm is extremely hard with tons of writings. This professor ruins this course.
She was very into discussion during class time (something i don't particularly like, but some people do). She was very good at breaking down large concepts so we could understand everything. However, it was the worst grade i got that quarter.
Great professor, very passionate about the subject and cares so much about the students. Lectures can be confusing sometimes, but issues are usually cleared up in section or in office hours. Go to her office hours! She is so helpful and really cool just to talk to, and she has a great memory so she will remember you.
It is so boring.
She is very passionate however the class does not interest me at all and her lecture aren't very clear
Great professor. Knows the material well and lectures are always interesting and clear. Attend lecture and section and be sure to read the majority of the books and you'll do great
Professor Ninh is awesome. She really cares about her students and making a connection to the class. She is super passionate about these books. The class is difficult if you have a tough grading TA, but has some really cool insights and concepts about 1st and 2nd generation As Am struggles. She was a perfect professor for this class.
Really great and easy! You get the midterm and final questions ahead of time, which gives you time to plan your answers with the TA's. Closed reading assignments were pretty easy. Overall a great class.
She is attractive!! Tough class, tedious multiple long essay midterm and final exam. But she gives out the questions before hand, so its not too difficult.
Great professor, one of the best I've had. Lecture is fun if you actually do the reading. She is challenging you to think for yourself, and it's not hard to do well if you do your share. TA's grade tough, but don't let that deter you from this class. Great literature requirement.
Lectures are quite boring. The flow of concepts is tough to get and class never seems to hold my attention. The books are cool, and she is nice if you talk to her, I just can't stand her lectures.
Very good professor.
This class was absolutely terrible. Some of the books were interesting but lecture was unbearable. She definitely tried and was open to suggestions, but at the end of the day the lectures could not hold my attention. Here flow of concepts never quite made sense. It's a pretty easy writing fulfillment though.
Very interesting take on Asian American Studies. More psychoanalysis than "the man is keeping us down!" I wasn't interested at all in the subject, but Ninh made it super interesting. Tough graders for sure though.
she is awful at teaching, her lectures are very unorganized
Professor Ninh is a very nice person, very sweet, but I think she's a horrible teacher. She did not capture my attention as a student and she went too fast through her material. The books are great, her concepts are great but her teaching methods are dull. Close readings throughout the quarter, one midterm- 3 short answer questions- and one final.
A good professor - the concepts she introduces are sometimes hard to understand, but she is more than willing to help clarify. A fair amount of reading, but the books were good. Made an effort to get to know my name. Definitely recommend.
Interesting topics and ideas raised in lecture. Professor talks pretty fast. You need to elaborate on the concepts she introduces on the exams. Not an easy class but she is very helpful in OHs.
