Took this course during Winter 2021. This is my second math class with Professor Garfield. His PowerPoints are clear and straight to the point. The weekly quizzes all based on hw and lecture. There was no midterm. The final basically worth 2 or 3 quizzes. He also taught us some Mathematica codes, which is very useful. Choose him if you can.
Peter is definitely an awesome professor. I have taken his Math 4A in the fall, Math 6A in the winter, and now am taking his Math 4B. Got two A+s for the two completed courses. He will never fail you. His grading includes 50% HW, 40% Quiz & final exam, and 10% participation of his OH and nectir posts.
Garfield isn't the best at teaching but his classes are definitely easy to get a good grade in with a basic understanding of the material. His GS page is extremely well organized. He gave weekly quizzes, no midterm, and lectures and homework posted mon, weds, and fri of every week plus a final. Gave lots of hw extensions. Overall, great prof!
Took him for Math 4A and 6A. He really does care about his students and the class is very organized. Gauchospace is very easy to navigate and there are 3 homeworks a week with lectures accordingly. Only downside he takes a while to grade weekly quizzes. The homework/quiz questions are a lot harder than in lecture so go to office hours or mathlab!
Garfield teaches math in a very succinct and efficient manner. Him and his TA's have been great for all my courses, and I recommend him for everyone. He is very flexible with homework, and the grading is very generous. Take him for all your classes!
He's a really friendly and understanding guy. He pushes back HW for the class when asked and it's weekly quizzes and a final so you can mess up and not ruin your grade. The quizzes/HW are a lot harder than his lectures prepare you for though, so make sure you get help if you need it.
One of the worst professors I've ever had the misfortune of having. He barely prepares for lectures, and it shows. He tried to be "funny" and just started having conversations in a 50 min lecture. He "teaches" with examples that aren't helpful, cancels offices hours often, and tests on material not covered by lecture or hw and expects expertise.
He doesnt teach, almost. He always ask you to do the iclicker. He hopes that you will learn it yourself. Hes class is overcrowded with lots of crashers. He said Math class is a social occasion, which is pretty ridiculous. He wants us to learn from each other instead of himself. Office hour has too many people, its hard to ask a single question
Peter is one of the best professors I have had. His lectures are very clear and he focuses more on ensuring that students understand the concepts than he does on proving them. His office hours are enjoyable and a great opportunity to get any questions answered.
The class in of itself is easy, the practice exams are almost EXACTLY like the actual test with a few curveball steps he doesn't mention (though if you show work and get it semi/ mostly wrong you'll still get a good grade). Honestly felt scared because I didn't take calc or even pre-calc in highschool but you'll be fine, enroll in CLAS groups.
Super easy class grading-wise, but if you don't learn super duper fast, you'll have to do a good amount of work outside of class. He moves super fast sometimes, and the homework isn't always the most straightforward. But the midterms don't impact your grade too much, and he'll raise a C to a B if you show effort by attending lectures and sections.
Extremely understanding and caring Professor. Exams are exactly the same as practice tests, just with different numbers, basically. Weekly quizzes in sections with 1 easy question (if you know what's going on). I averaged an 87% on all of the exams and 90% on the quizzes, and I got an A-. IClicker didn't have geo-location on.
Before going into this class I took AP Calculus in high school and that definitely helped me a lot. Peter is a caring person and wants to be there for his students, he is just not the best teacher and makes concepts a lot more complicated than they actually are. Putting in the effort he guarantees a B and gives 4 practice tests for study material
Great guy, easy class, free A, take the class
Garfield is a great professor - caring and passionate. However, he grades your exams really late. But he makes his lectures clear and fun. He lets you use a notecard for each exam, which is really helpful and guarantees a passing grade for each exam and the class in general. Would definitely take his class again!
Really nice guy, makes it easy to pass the class. Slow grader so beware. I didn't find his lectures very helpful but he posts all his slides so just be prepared to learn the material outside of class. Do the practice exams to prepare for tests and you'll be fine!
Engaging lectures by a charismatic and funny man. Seems like a really nice guy. Practice exams are practically identical to the midterms/final. Pay some attention in lecture/section and you'll be fine.
Peter is an alright teacher. He is not the best at teaching material in my opinion but his sections really help out. The classes is like 60% test. He gives note cards on the test and practice exams that are almost exactly like the real test.
For having to teach around 700 students, I think Garfield did a great job. He made the content very understandable
Peter is a nice guy, good prof. Attendance (iclicker), daily hw set, weekly quiz in section (10pts), 3 midterms, and a final. Sometimes the hw problems were so different than the ones we did during lecture. Front/back of notecard allowed on midterms and final. Peter mostly reads off slides, but I still feel like actually going to class helped.
peter is a nice, sweet guy but a pretty average professor. he just reads off the slides and homework is kinda frustrating, but the practice exams and notecards came in clutch for midterms. super slow grader so you don't really know your grade
Peter is weird. Course is over & idk my last 2 test scores or final grade. Couldn't see my grade the whole qtr. Section is mandatory b/c there are quizzes. hw 3x a week, 3 midterms & 1 final with practice problems beforehand. He has 'great effort' (for attendance/sec quiz scores) which means c,c+,b- automatically = b. He just reads off the slides.
Good professor! Garfield is really nice and kind. Only reason he is at a 4/5 is because the grading. Peter takes FOREVER. There were 2 midterms and a final in Spring and midterm 1 was graded 4 weeks after it was taken, then midterm 2 grades didn't go in until FINALS week. (was taken week 5). Great guy though.
It was a great class. Quiz in weekly section was always easy. the midterms were not that bad and lectures were pretty funny. I had Evan who was a really good TA.
