Professor Garfield does have a sense of humor; however, it does not compensate for his lack of teaching skills to students, as he mainly reads from the slides. If you want to succeed, you'll need to do self-teaching and definitely sign up for CLAS for the class, as it will be your savior.
I thought Professor Garfield was an amazing professor. He is very knowledgable at what he does and cracks some jokes here and there which makes the lecture so engaging. What I would do next time if I took this class again was to try and understand the content before the lecture so that when he gives you time to work, it'll be much more efficient.
I actually learned nothing. he doesn't teach and just reads off of slides that don't even explain how to do the work. I can agree with the other students that he's really funny, but when it comes to being a good teacher.... no. If you didn't take pre-calc before this course you're cooked.
Super nice and funny guy. There's a lot of hw but go to office hrs bc that was super helpful. There are weekly quizzes in section but they're light. The past exams are EXACTLY like the actual test. Attendance matters but the iClicker isn't geofenced so you can do it anywhere. He is a super slow grader though but overall a good guy.
Garfield was a overall good professor, but you really have to pay attention in lecture. I thought he explained the material well, and for 34A, you get a notecard for the exams. The practice exams that he provides are very similar to the exams in class, so I would heavily recommend making sure you know how to do each of the problems.
Easy lecture, funny, stay on top of homework.
He's a nice guy, cracks some dad jokes here and there during lecture. Class is HW heavy, but he posts good slides and gives helpful resources for the tests.
Taken for Math182; This professor was very easy posted lecture notes and homework was very easy and doable. No midterms, but be prepared for weekly gradescope quizzes. Final was a group paper + Group presentation. If you want an easy A take this prof for 182!
Garfield teaches in a way that makes me understand his material less. I do not like math and he contributed even more to it. Section was actually helpful though. He uploads practice tests that are almost identical to the actual tests so shoutout to bro.
Very great teacher. I previously had Schley who couldn't teach if his life depended on it, so having Garfield teach was a relief. He explains concepts really well and makes it obvious what he expects out of his students for the exams. Homework grading is tough, and don't expect grades for exams/homework to be released quickly. I recommend taking!!!
His lectures were horrendous, but he is a silly funny guy. The practice exams were identical to the tests and he provides a notecard. Literally just write the practice questions on your notecard. Lowk a lot of hw, but he didn't geofence iclicker so you could do it from home. SO SLOW AT GRADING so be aware. I had him for 34A and 34B.
This is the best calc course ur gonna find. The practice tests are next to identicle to the actual exam, as long as u suceed on them u will do great. Lots of HW but managble bc u have unlimited tries and several are dropped. Lecture can be boring though, attendence is mandatory and for me the class was early morning.
Professor Garfield kept lectures interesting but explanation and slides of the material were very confusing and difficult to understand. Section had weekly quizzes and did better job of explaining material.
His behavior demonstrates clear racial prejudice. He has mocked individuals from Panama, Greenland, and Gaza. I would strongly advise against taking his course unless you subscribe to white supremacist ideologies.
Peter restored my faith in math professors here at UCSB. He is a great lecturer and is very clear and concise. He explains very well how to solve problems and has many iclickers in his class that will help prepare you for his exams. He graded his exams very slowly but they were extremely similar to his practice exams he posts on canvas.
34B was an easy class. Lectures are engaging and have good iclicker questions to learn content. Practice exams on canvas are identical to the 3 in-class midterms + final making them easy (but graded slowly). Prof Garfield is very funny and makes lectures interesting. He is also caring and offers makeup exams. I highly recommend taking his class!
Explains concepts very well and is understanding about situations outside of class. Attendance is mandatory through iClicker, but it isn't geolocated to the room. Tests are just like the practice problems posted on canvas, so if you study those, you will do well.
Has not graded any midterms or given any feedback. More than a week late to post grades, and was does not give very good lectures. Rely on self studying.
I took his class in the fall and it was really easy! Peter Garfield is very passionate and funny in lecture. He's accessible through office hours but good luck hearing back from him through email. His lectures are engaging and easy to follow along. Make sure to do all his old exams, they help a lot in doing good on the midterms and final!
I'm sure he's great for lower div classes but for upper division classes hes an absolute mess. He hasnt graded either of our 2 class exams, forgets to post homework MOST WEEKS, and regularly lies about things such as releasing lecture slides or giving us exam information. Also does not care to give practice exams, so you have NO CLUE whats going on
Decent lectures/teaching style, but taking AP Calc before this class was very helpful. The practice tests were the best way to study and all 3 midterms & the final were fair imo. Overall Prof. Garfield was really nice; he made an effort to get to know students and make 9am lectures fun. Attendance via iClicker counts for small part of your grade.
I took Garfield for 34A & B. He's really funny and takes the time to try to learn his students names even in a huge lecture. Its clear he really cares. You just have to take time on your own to try to understand the material in order to excel. He gives opportunities for you to do your best. The only college professor I've had that allows notecards.
such a sweet and nice professor. super easy to prepare for tests bc he posts examples that are exactly like the test. homework load is not bad at all even though it's 3x a week. no curveballs or surprises on any test, you can feel well prepared by just studying the materials he gives without any outside help needed
Class is easy because the practice midterms are exactly like the midterms and final, like even if you skipped every lecture, as long as you study the practice exams and make sure you can do those specific problems, then you'd be fine. Homework due every other night which sucks but other than that, solid easy class, good professor.
