Overall good professor! Homeworks are challenging. And lectures sometimes go really fast. However, when you review the material again after the lecture, it should mostly make sense. Secondly, the people writing the negative comments are those who don't go to office hours, where professor go over every single homework problem and try to help you!
Even his TA and CLAS tutor do not know how to do his homework.
Homework is so hard because he never teach anything helpful in class. Everyone in my section feels behind and nobody know how to do the homework, and we all did really bad on the quiz. Peter if you are reading this, either make your homework easier or teach something useful in class, because homework does count A LOT in our grade.
Peter seems like a nice guy but not the best at teaching an intro to calculus class. Homeworks assigned are so hard for no reason and it's completely not related to the lectures. There are weekly quizzes and he often posts review questions the night before the quiz so you have to cram study. Overall, don't take him if you are new to calculus.
Organized, clear and interactive lectures . Very fair tests and grading. Fairly easy weekly quizzes and guaranteed 50% just for showing up to section
Great
Garfield is one of the best professors I've ever encountered. Took him for F21, his class consisted of weekly quizzes, Iclicker, two midterms and a final. He posted practice exams for midterms and final which were pretty similar (which is something that I am grateful for). He also posted recorded lectures after lecture if anyone missed anything.
Good professor, his lectures were well structed, and easy to understand. He posted all of the lecture slides online too. Office hours were almost always super busy because of the large class size, but he did his best to make it useful for everyone. Grading was pretty forgiving.
As a teacher overall, he was super caring and nice. However, his lectures don't make sense and can get confusing. His practice exams are exactly like the actual exams and for the final as well so it made it easy to pass the exams. There was homework due before class every day and weekly quizzes in the section.
I LOVE PETER!! Coming into this class I had never taken calculus, but the lectures and homework were super helpful and clear. The midterms/finals are JUST like the ones he posts online, I never got below a 93% on a test and the grading is very lenient if you show work. Can't recommend Peter enough, if you're nervous about his class don't be!
Midterms and final are WAY easier than the homework, but if you sit down and really try the homework is not that difficult either. I got 100% on all 3 midterms and 95% on the final... the midterms and final are exactly like the ones he posts online, so don't bother going over homework questions. Garfield is super funny and accessible outside class
I didnt go to his lectures but I did well only because I took ap calculus in high school. His explanations were confusing so I used my notes from AP. He has 3 midterms but if you want the best grade go to classes because not going brought my grade down. I also suggest taking CLAS if you take this class.
I LOVE THIS PROFESSOR! He is super funny and cares, This class is more algebra than actual calculus. Past exams are given to us as practice and tests look exactly like the practice ones. Lectures are way too fast paced though (for me), so I 1000000% recommend using CLAS as a resource. Lots of homework (after every lecture), but doable.
Peter might be the funniest prof I've ever had. Made class so entertaining. The lectures were not really the most helpful content wise, but if you put into a little effort into studying on your own, you'll be fine. Midterm and finals were not that bad and reflected what was covered in homework/class.
His lectures weren't very helpful for me. He posts his slides from class, though, and those are helpful for studying and completing hw. I learned more by watching Youtube videos. He was a nice grader- I recommend.
he doesn't break down the materials very well, he just gives you problems to solve on his board or whatever and he will give the answer in the end but hardly breaks it down on how he got that answer and if you haven't taken calc in hs, then you are going to struggle so bad
Peter, ur the most beautiful math34a professor I've ever encountered. I never understood what love meant until I walked into class. You really eat up the lectures. Gosh, you're so funny... and smart... and handsome. If I could have one professor for the rest of my life... I would choose you, peter. Math wouldn't exist without u
The lectures include many unnecessary details that don't cut straight to the chase. During lectures he provides no worked out solutions and for a conceptually heavy class, I had to rely on 3B1Br to actually understand the purpose of the class. The tests were manageable but I ended up having to rely on other resources to actually learn
Professor Garfield was really nice during my experience. He goes over any and every question in lecture in detail, and it very approachable. He is hard to approach though, as a majority of his office hours are online. Overall he was nice, and clearly wanted his students to do well. His study guides were moderately reflective of the tests.
Amazing professor, couldn't recommend him more for 4A. Always cracking jokes during class. Despite the large class sizes, Prof. Garfield is super accessible and I would def recommend going to Math Labs and office hours as topics can get tricky past about week 6. Midterms and finals are at reasonable difficulty and the homework is very manageable.
he is so diligent! Literally, what my tuition meant for, bro what kind prof would extend his office hours to 2 hours just to make sure everyone's answer can be answered??? Also, he curves!!! However, if you wanna succeed with this course, it's best to read the textbook before the lecture
He was a very sweet man who is obviously very passionate about math, however, it seemed like he took pride in how difficult his lectures were to understand. I would learn more from attempting the homework and searching for help online than from what was on his lecture slides. I recommend getting outside help to really grasp the concepts!
While Peter is a funny professor, he is not a great lecturer. His explanations are not clear and often lead to confusion. Lecture is difficult to understand; many were forced to sign up for CLAS or read the textbook. Attendance at lecture is practically mandatory (iClicker), but his exams are fairly easy. !!Sign up for CLAS if you are struggling!!
Definitely one of the best math professors at UCSB. If you have the chance to take 4A with him I would highly recommend.
