Surprisingly, I feel like the class was a bit too easy. The notes he writes are extremely detailed and effectively make it so the lectures are pointless. The tests are super easy and the homework is even easier. The grading scale was probably the most lenient thing I've ever seen. Absolutely would recommend if you want an easy A.
Best math professor I've ever had and among my top profs! Very accommodating and understanding of the circumstances and weighed the hw enough for me to not be anxious for each test and still do my best on them. The tests are very reflective of the lectures and review problems and make me feel something for math
Fell extremely behind, didnt do any work/show up for most of the class, yet he let me make up my work late and still gave me full credit. Passed the class with a decent understanding of the subject. Just do the work and youll get an A easily. I didnt end up finishing some of the work, and still ended up with a B. Tests are very fair as well.
If you have the chance to take a class with him, do it. His lectures are very very easy to understand which is a RARE thing at ucsb! This is the second time I've taken a class with him and I can't recommend him enough.
Organised lectures with all the notes posted online. He has a monotone voice but he explains the concepts quite well. The material gets significantly harder during the second half of the quarter, so go to CLAS if you need help and you should be fine. The midterms are manageable if you do the homework and the practice questions.
Porter's lectures are extremely easy to follow and you learn a lot by doing the large amount of homework he assigns. His grading was extremely lenient (especially for this pandemic) and he made sure everyone got the best grade they could with great accommodations. Highly recommend
Easily one of the best math profs at UCSB. He gives clear and straightforward lectures that complemented the textbook really well. Porter was super helpful during office hours in clearing up any questions. 10/10 recommend.
Enroll His Courses! Great!
Best professor you can ask for in the math department. He's very nice and seems to care about his students. He assigns a lot of homework but it's doable. Doing the extra practice problems he suggests really helps for the exams. Shouldn't be too bad if you take time to study.
Love his lectures. Hes such a nice professor and he even gives extra credits to students. As long as you attend his lectures and review the notes from classes, it is not hard to get a good grades.
He's a pretty standard professor. His grading system is very fair and easy to get a B or higher. Some of the theory is difficult to understand (it's not really a computational class) but you just need to make sure you keep up with the concepts and ask questions. Highly recommend going to lecture even if it's not mandatory or it's hard to understand
Porter was great for Math 4A. His tests were fair. He is very quiet and monotone during his lectures, so it was difficult to pay attention, especially at 8am. Would definitely recommend him nonetheless.
The best professor I ever met. He gave lots of extra credit. You don't even need to go to class. The test is easier than homework.
He is definitely the most patient. He is always willing to offer help to studentyou will definitely get an A in his class
Not a bad lecturer, he mumbles though so sit up front. He posts the lecture templates online, then fills them out during lecture. His class was not very conceptual and mainly focused on rigorous definitions, so outside materials were necessary to gain a proper understanding of linear algebra. Easy tests and pretty easy A, though.
Learned a lot of what he taught in high school Calculus (not AP) which helped. Lectures aren't the most interesting as he's monotone and mumbles so drink coffee and sit near the front. Gives a decent amount of WebWork hw but it's good practice for the tests, which were fair. Also gives study guides w/ answers & is very helpful during OH.
Porter is straightforward and he answers questions during lecture. He does mumble though so it's best if you sit towards the front. It's Calculus and he isn't the most ecstatic professor but he teaches what you need to know and you can go to his office hours for more clarification. His midterms are relatively easy but the final was harder.
Professor Porter gives you all the study material you need. You can easily pass this class if you just do the work. It's calculus so hearing it once in lecture isn't going to solidify it in your memory. He posts the completed lecture slides after each class and assigns webwork to help study. Review guides for each test.
Professor Porter is the worst professor Ive ever had. He just stands up there and mumbles things incoherently while teaching calculus in the most abstract, difficult way to understand it. His handwriting is illegible which is how he does his lectures. Dont take him, youll learn nothing.
If you want to spend 50 minutes every lecture listening to a low, incomprehensible mumble tangentially regarding some things about calculus while watching some dude run his red marker over an electronic worksheet, then spend two hours doing 90 homework problems, then take a test with problems that werent covered by either, then take 3A with Porter
Professor Porter is honestly one of the most robotic and uninteresting professors I have ever had. Sitting through his lectures is like watching paint dry with the sound of static in the background. He lectures as if we are watching him do his homework and he occasionally speaks to himself. He ignores questions and takes no time to explain concepts
He gives you many chances to improve your grade. He's really monotone which can be boring but hes quite nice and makes awkward cheesy jokes. Overall, pretty good teacher. i'm not the best in math and did well.
I have never been a math wizard but Matt is absolutely amazing at making any student a math student! He gives you printed hand outs to follow along with in class and gives numerous examples to help you understand the material. He is always willing to help you with any questions and will casually slide in some funny math puns during class.
Class was super easy. For his lectures he would hand-write prepared notes on a projector, so when taking notes you could just copy what he was writing and get by fine. I asked him for a bunch of favors, like extending homework and changing the day of my final, and he was super chill about it.
