Professor Hofmann was awesome!! She is obviously passionate about her work and her section of EEMB 3 was super engaging and interesting. It is also the most difficult section of the class, and while it is a lot of memorization, she teaches it in a way that is very easy to understand. She is also very accessible and approachable.
I really enjoyed Professor Carlson's section of EEMB 3. He explains everything in an easy-to-understand way. His exam was very manageable and similar to the practice exam he gave before. Go to lecture and study the slides and you'll be fine!
Professor Hofmann is by far the best professor of the intro bio series (and I'd assume upper divs too if she teaches those). She makes lectures very engaging with her silly personality and real-world examples, and does an excellent job of communicating information in a way that is very easy to understand. Definitely take her!
Such a good lecturer, he was so engaging an interested in what he was talking about. Gave a practice midterm which was helpful on the midterm BUT some questions were worded really weird but he gave back points on the questions he messed up. Study and you'll be fine.
I liked him a lot. He is clear on what he wants us to know for the test and seems passionate about what he is teaching. As long as you watch the lectures and pay attention to what he is saying while he explains his slides you will succeed. Nice professor.
Meh. Lectures are not the most interesting, and slides are not informative at all. Need to really pay attention as he's wiggling around topics making it hard to grasp. Not the worst but definitely not the best.
Prof. Carlson's portion of the class is informative and well-organized. The quizzes and exam material is pulled mostly from the lectures, with a small portion coming from assigned readings. Lecture slides are fairly detailed, so studying is pretty straightforward. The practice midterm is really helpful too.
Professor Carlson is like a celebrity amongst my friends. He's an amazing lecturer, my favorite out of the three EEMB3 professors and is incredibly clear and interesting. He obviously cares a lot about microbes and his enthusiasm is infectious. Aside from that, hes like a literal dilf. My friend says he has "firefighter energy" and I have to agree.
Extremely boring but his lectures are organized and make sense once you review them. The exam was fair and expectations for it were clear. He also responded very promptly to emails. Can't really ask for much more.
His lectures are pretty good and straightforward. The test questions are directly from lecture stuff, so there's nothing really tricky about the class. However if you have extra questions I wouldn't really recommend office hours. The answers were dry and short most of the time.
Very boring lectures-great organization, but got very dull very fast. The exam on his section was relatively straightforward, but SO dense
Great professor. She ties in what we learn about what's happening in the world ecosystems and it's really interesting. Most people seemed to respond well to her lectures, but there's still quite a bit of info to get through. The lab was kinda cool, but there were dissections in it. Lots to know and it's best to stay on top of it for lecture & lab.
There's a ton of material and looking back at the recorded lectures is really helpful. His portion of the class was not my favorite, but he was still pretty engaging for an 8 am. He does do iclickers and unfortunately, the questions are usually about things you haven't discussed in lecture, but other than that, he's a solid choice.
Great professor. tests were straight forward, material was presented clearly, and goals for the class were clearly laid out.
Awesome Professor. The lecture slides are very helpful, lecture is enjoyable, and she is very clear on the format of the test. She even gives some example questions that pretty accurate in depicting the test. Lectures are recorded, slides are online, and she provides a study guide at the end. Best Professor of the EEMB3 series.
Dr. Hofmann was a funny and obviously passionate lecturer, though her lectures often felt like she was reading off her slides -- no iClickers, recorded lectures, and 50% of the final was her questions. She shared her experience working in Sacramento pushing public policy reform issues, presence at World Oceans Day, and advice to students in EEMB.
Taught animal section for EEMB3. Super funny. Perfect combo of enthusiastic about animals but also includes the necessary information on her slides, unlike the plant prof. Gave students life advice during the last lecture. All lectures had a part that taught us applications to modern biology/modern science.
Carlson taught microbiology section for EEMB 3. Lectures were cool but had a lot of content and kind of dragged on. Tests were overall straightforward but still fair amount of questions that were worded weird/tried to trip you up. He is a pretty ok professor, as long as you pay attention and study notes you will be fine.
Teaches clearly and gives iclicker questions in class. His tests require alot of memorization. Seems to be helpful.
If you are an EEMB student and have never had a class with Dr. Hofmann, you are missing out. One of the greatest professors I have ever had. Super funny, helpful, and knowledgeable.
Best bio professor I've had at UCSB! She makes lectures so fun and interesting and she is just hilarious. Even though class was at 8am, she made me look forward to going every time. Definitely take her courses!
Hofmann is very clear during lectures and as long as you attend you will do well. She is very understanding if you talk to her and are making an effort to learn. You can tell she loves what she does and is trying to make a difference in the world.
a very cool professor. she had a great sense of humor and really tried to help out on test hints. her final was incredibly easy and if you go to lecture you'll be fine. i didn't read the text book because she didn't take much out of it. i would love to take another class taught by her.
very cool guy. sexy too. there was a lot of material but his test for midterm and final were pretty easy. approachable and friendly.
