so confusing...rambles on about nothing, crazy hard long tests that have nothing to do with his lectures. makes up new rules for basic acid base chemistry. go to section and review the old midterms, it's the only way
TERRIBLE. His tests are nothing like what he lectures, go to section its more worth your time
I was trying to figure out why no one has given him a rating in the last 4 years, but now I finally figured it out. It's because this is the best upper division biology course at UCSB and no one wants you to know how easy it is. Chuck is extremely nice and approachable and the exams resemble the practice exams.
He writes all over the board and its kind of hard to take notes, you really have to pay attention. The class is very interesting so that helps me pay attention. His exams are verrryy sinilar to the practice tests. Grading is fair. Overall, he is a good teacher
Terrible... He doesn't test the way he teaches. Don't take this class...It is not worth the suffering. You will put in a lot of time and probably still do poorly.
Worst professor and class I have had in four years at UCSB!
What a terrible class. Worst I've ever taken.
Amazing professor! Great person! Actually wants you to learn and does as much as he can to make it completely possible to get a great grade. Be prepared to write like a mad man in lectures - he goes fast! Lectures aren't mandatory, but you better have his notes if you want any chance! Discussions mandatory. One of the best ever!
Prof. Sears teaches an extremely challenging course and is not for the unmotivated or for those who don't like a challenge. This class will teach you how to think outside the box and really test your ability to understand the main concepts. Those who blame Dr. Sears for the inability to do well should really rethink their investment into the clas
A Great professor that treats you well if you do well. You have to be motivated in his class, and his tests are fairly simple if you know what he wants you to know. Don't wait until last minute to ask questions. I highly recommend taking the accompanying 108AL protein lab in conjunction with 108. You will do better.
dr. sears is hard (and i thought Bruice was pretty bad)... he gave us stupid online quiz (that is worth almost 20% of ur grade) during the FIRST week of school!!! i was so pissed at him, but he's actually pretty nice in person. all of his test r open-book, but don't be fooled, it's pretty hard.
one of the tuffest classes ever. re-think this one. I worked so hard and got through somehow. however tests are extremely difficult and tricky. I liked him as a person...but im not sure class needs to be this tuff.
you are doomed
this guy's class is extremely hard. i learned nothing because i fell asleep in lecture everyday because he was so damn boring. after having sears as my professor, i changed my major.
very boring subject matter and he doesn't make it better.
Montonous voice...really hard to stay awake in. Slides are overwhelming. Exams are just as overwhelming. Open notes/books but still EXTREMELY hard. Be prepared for anything because he is not very sympathetic when it comes to exam day. He does expect you to have prepared thoroughly.
Avoid this class by all means, I spend $200+ just on his books, readers and other class materials and I found the class to be a horrible experiance. Take Chem 142 series instead

Wow is this guy hard. I learned from the class, but studied so hard for it I did poor in my other class... he demands a lot of time.
Prof. Sears teaches his lecture like he is giving a 10 week refresh seminar to his peers. If youre not a immunologist, be prepared to learn it all with no help from his lecture.
Ugh. He's infatuated with his ppt presentations, and he's late to class almost every day. All he does is read the slides to you, but you've already got printed copies on his handouts. Makes attending class seem redundant. I'm an A student, and I barely got a B-. I leaned much more from the TA.
he is sooooo boring! i'm hoping that his immuno class is better because you could tell he doesn't like biochem at all. parts were helpful, but overall i wanted to sleep everytime i walked in the room
Nice guy who cares about teaching. Once you get a hang of his testing style, you can really learn a lot from him.
Very extraneous with everything!
