Really great professor, I love that he doesn't use powerpoints, but that means you HAVE to go to class. He doesnt try to trick you on tests, and gives a practice test that is really similar in style to the actual test. He is reasonable in that he tests you on big concepts and thus I was able to really learn the material not just for the test.

Writes a lot and very quickly on the board and sometimes says things that show up on tests but doesn't write them down so that means you still have to! If you transcribe everything and study, the tests are straight from the notes and shouldn't be bad at all. Doesn't test super specific, a lot of comparison between the different viruses you learn.

This class is not as easy as the other comments make it seem. The tests are straight forward, which I appreciate, and they are similar to practice exams. However it is still a lot of material to memorize. He talks very fast and his handwriting is illegible. Overall I would recommend this class, just be prepared to study a good amount.

Interesting class, interesting teacher! He goes fast and introduces a LOT of mechanisms, but his tests are just like the practice exams (some with exact same question). Virology is a really cool topic, and this guy teaches it well. Discussion sections are helpful b/c it exposes you to scientific literature--the core of science.

Tests are based off of lecture notes, not the book. Pretty easy for UD mcdb.

I was trying to figure out why no one has given him a rating in the last 4 years, but now I finally figured it out. It's because this is the best upper division biology course at UCSB and no one wants you to know how easy it is. Chuck is extremely nice and approachable and the exams resemble the practice exams.

He writes all over the board and its kind of hard to take notes, you really have to pay attention. The class is very interesting so that helps me pay attention. His exams are verrryy sinilar to the practice tests. Grading is fair. Overall, he is a good teacher

Amazing professor! Great person! Actually wants you to learn and does as much as he can to make it completely possible to get a great grade. Be prepared to write like a mad man in lectures - he goes fast! Lectures aren't mandatory, but you better have his notes if you want any chance! Discussions mandatory. One of the best ever!
