Lectures were long and heavy. Homework was difficult to understand and she never went over it. Quizzes were short problems from lecture and homework. Section is mandatory. Used iClicker for lecture. Finals were in person and long and difficult. I struggled and barely passed the class, so definitely find a buddy and ask for help when you need it.
She is a really nice Professor. The lecture is engaging. Lecture is recorded. Every material in this course is easy to read. Just enjoy this course.
Professor Doris was a very nice professor and the course was very manageable. However, I had a hard time understanding material in lecture because she would find errors within her own work. Additionally, she does not make her examples that are given in class, available on GauchoSpace for further understanding.
Great Professor. Really learned and enjoyed her course. Will take her again if I can.
She was consistent throughout the whole quarter and really approachable in office hours. Exam questions came directly from HW problems but lowest quiz grades were not dropped.
Pretty challenging but overall not bad Professor. The lectures and course structure were organized. It was a lot of material but manageable.
For PSTAT 5A, I REALLY would advise you to avoid her for this class. Her lectures are hard to follow and she \ constantly made mistakes during examples. When students would respectfully correct her she would get defensive saying it was "up to interpretation" when she just didn't want to admit to being wrong. Easy topics were made so much harder.
not a hard class at all, just a lot of work
Great experience
This course is a good place to start coding. The teacher is nice and caring.
Professor Solis is so sweet! She really cares about getting to know the individual student. There are weekly labs and homework, which can be long, but are totally doable by showing up to office hours and the lab - the lab is essentially just time to work and ask questions. Overall great class that really provides a strong foundation for Python.
One of the sweetest professors I have ever had. It feels less like a class, and more like going to get a cup of coffee with your friend and they are going over the material to you in a way that makes the most sense. The labs, assignments, and projects are all challenging enough to teach, but fair enough to enjoy. Take any class you can with her!
The most miserable class I have ever taken. It takes forever to get your grades. Tests are hard and unrelated to the lecture and take up to 70% of the overall grade. Sections are mandatory. Late work is not accepted. Don't take her if you want to be happy.
hw counts for grade, 15% 75% comes from test, absolutely horrible teacher makes everything overly complicated need to go to section, but ta don't help at all, they ask you to copy down the material
Avoid 100%. Absolutely terrible.
This professor has an innate ability to make simple concepts unnecessarily difficult and confusing. Having already taken PSTAT 5, the topics discussed are pretty much the same but introduced in a far less intuitive way. I wouldn't choose this professor, as her teaching methods seem to make the content more complex than it needs to be.
DS 1 is a good introduction to basic python programming and to statistics, I would highly recommend for anyone who wants to get coding but doesn't know where to start. The textbook is online and free. The assignments are all coding puzzles of varying difficulty, and the midterm/final, while more difficult, can be done with a partner.
