Enthusiastic in lectures, especially as the course covered her specialty. Few graded assignments and mandatory lecture. Lectured off slide too.
Good professor overall. This class is on her specialty so she's passionate about it and lectures are pretty interesting and informative. Go to lectures for the big picture and context, do readings for use in papers and some exam questions are on the readings.
Awesome professor. She actually cares about her students and puts effort into know all the students. Very clear lectures and the test are very straight forward. There is a lot of reading, but she selects very interesting works that are not difficult to read at all. I look forward to taking more classes by her!
Definitely one of the best professors I have had so far. Very sweet lady, puts a lot of care in knowing her students. Lecture is not required but if you dont go you are at a serious disadvantage. There is a lot of reading but the reading isnt exceptionally difficult. A fair grader, and a little on a easy side. Highly recommended.
Meh. Typical history class. Doesn't go in chronological order, she goes in themes which makes it sort of hard to contextualize.
One of the things that really bothered me about Professor Bernstein is that she treats her students like children. She's not afraid to call you out if you are whispering in the first minute of class. SHE is definitely interested in the material, but her voice drones on and on and she is incredibly repetitive. Some important info but boring...
She's ok. Efficient, fairly typical professor; makes the subject understandable and interesting.
Easy class. Need a good TA. Lectures are basically an outline of class. Go to lecture or read, up to you. Would recommend.
Great teacher! She is so sweet, and makes an attempt to make lectures interesting (although some people on here disagree). Easy class if you do readings (which are interesting), but make sure you know what your talking about on the papers! Shes a terrible grader.
Tries very hard to know each and everyone in the class. Kinda nerdy but very sweet. Readings were kind of confusing but lectures were interesting. Two papers, take home midterm all of which rely on good knowledge of the readings. She can tell if you are BSing the papers so know your stuff when you type. She is very sweet and easy to talk to though
I have never seen any teacher try harder to connect with her students however most of her attempts are futile. The class material is boring and her lecture style makes it even worse. If you do the reading you will be fine however the grading is much more subjective that any history class should be but I recieved an A so I am by no means complaining
She really tries to explain things to students and answer their questions. Her lectures are very organized, but I sometimes thought it was hard figuring out what to take notes on (the slides listed key points that she lecture off of). The class itself was pretty interesting. I would recommend taking this class.
The class is alright, however, the professor as far as lectures goes covers a lot in one day, and very easy to follow.
Excellent! Her lectures were so well organised and clear. The subject matter gets a little tedious when it all focuses on religion, but that isn't her fault. She's very helpful. Go to her office hours, she seems interested in getting to know her students. I love this class!
When I came into UCSB, I was a Biology major. After taking this class...I have dropped all of my chemistry, biology, physics, and math....and have become a history major. She is by far the most helpful professor on campus.
Very clear lectures, a lot of readings though. The assigned books aren't too bad, neither are the two paper assignments. She's very helpful. The tests are somewhat difficult, especially the IDs. She gives you five potential essays to study then puts two or three of them on the test. Would suggest her to anyone, great class.
Professor Bernstein is awesome! Good use of slides and music to complement reading assignments. Pretty interesting speaker most of the time (even with somewhat mundane subject matter).

She uses visual aids to help make the lectures entertaining. I would recommend this class if you are interested in Medieval/ Renaissance studies. Readings are relivant and interesting. A little harder than if you are looking for an easy "A." She starts lectures on time, be there a few minutes early
Professor Bernstein is one of my favorite professors. She assigns a lot of readings, but taking 4b with her is worth it. You have to do the readings and go to class to get a good grade on the tests. The lectures are usually pretty entertaining. I plan to take more of her classes in the future.
Great! Very committed to presenting the material in an understandable way so as to gain our interest. Very helpful with the papers, and any questions about the class. Frequently extends office hrs. Even postphoned the due date of one of our papers. Tests sorta hard.Interesting stuff. loves teaching
