Professor Bernstein appears to be kind at first, but once you visit her during office hours, you realize she is not. Upon going to office hours, she was quite rude to me when I simply asked about what I missed when I was sick UPON HER REQUEST. Most discouraging professor I have ever had, made me feel like a horrible student. Grades insanely hard.

She is nice and good at explaining things, but she grades pretty hard. Although, you can get extra credit through doing extra papers (which you will most likely have to do). I am usually an A student on essays and other wiring assignments so I was taken a step back. Lectures are not too interesting, and would have to force myself to go.

She is very passionate about what she teaches which helps because her lectures are extremely informative and clear. So long as you do the assignments and participate in section you should be on your way to an easy pass!

His 4B was definitely not the hardest class ever but personally the content is a little hard to get into. Depending on your TA the papers can be graded really harshly. Would recommend the professor but maybe not the class if you're not interested in medieval history.

This class was very straightforward. Professor Bernstein's lectures were very organized and clear. There was lots of reading, a forum post every week, two midterm essays, and a take-home final. The guidelines were clear and if you go do the reading and go to office hours for help when needed you'll do okay. Not an easy GE but not too bad either.

Professor Bernstein is super knowledgable about the material she teaches. She lectures in this slow, clear, articulate way that I've never heard any other professor use. Lots of reading for the class, and the material can get dense, but she is very patient and accessible.

Have taken several classes by her. Super nice and patient and always accessible any time you have questions. Clear instruction and organization. For upper-division classes, there is a short paper 3-5 pages due every week, but you only need to do 3 or 4 of them, and any extra would add to your total grade. Exams need good notes and reading.

Lectures are interesting, though I would bring some coffee to stay alert. There are six opportunity to write three required papers. And the other three can be taken as extra credit. If you meet her during office hours she will work with you! Great professor.

Nice professor who is helpful, but class is a drag. The papers are somewhat hard, and the tests while they seem easy, are graded a little too harsh. If you enjoy the era (France 1515-1715) you might like it, but I personally wasn't a fan. Regardless, ask her questions in office hrs, she knows her stuff well.

The lectures were pretty boring because of her monotone voice and just doesn't really make the material all that enjoyable. Especially since you have to read. Textbook is not the main thing to read for this course, just stick with the reader and that will definitely help you out.

This class can get dull and boring. Sit close to the front so you won't get distracted. Bernstein is a pretty good professor. She posts lecture notes on gauchospace, so don't worry if you miss class. Going to office hours can be helpful, but you better have a TA that grades not too harsh. I got a C- and a C on my papers, shoulda been B's.

Her lectures are basically pointless as the midterm and final are all based on the reader. She gives pop quizzes in class for attendance. Never uploads any grades into gauchospace. Difficulty of TA determines your grade.

I have fallen asleep in every single one of her lectures and I'm not sure if it's because of her monotonous speech or because of the dim lighting in the lecture hall. The class was pretty difficult and she gave "pop quizzes" during lecture to count for participation. TAs graded the papers/midterm/final pretty roughly but were helpful.

I, personally, don't like the time period for this class (1050-1700) so I was pretty disinterested during lecture. A lot of reading if you're taking for a GE. Midterm and final were graded pretty hard; 2 papers were graded easier (with nearly equal weight on your grade as the midterm and final, so it evens out). Don't take if it's not your thing.

very little written on her powerpoints and she talks monotone emphasizing some words that dont need to be emphasized. lectures make me fall asleep. makes you stay after class ends if shes not done speaking. gives a lot of extra information not needed for the tests.

Lectures made me fall asleep every time. Not too bad of a class but harsh grading. If you're into the time period you might like it but otherwise have fun dragging through.

Pretty easy class if youre a history major, but otherwise, you might struggle if you dont find the subject interesting enough. A lot of reading and pretty daunting midterm and final. The papers werent too bad, but hopefully youll have an easier TA.

The class is OK, but the lectures are pretty boring and it can be pretty hard to follow sometimes.

Easy for a history major like myself, can see how others taking for GE find it overwhelming. Lectures can drag on, but they are usually pretty interesting. Having a good TA helps, Anna is mine and she is awesome and very helpful. I was the one who got the only A on the first paper, so get rekt everyone else.

She is very knowledgeable about the time period and the her assessments are clear and straightforward. On the other hand, by week 4 I was quite bored in lecture. It seems as though she lists fact after fact without urgency or a cental question. One lecture about Pope Gregory was interesting. She also says "Hello?" repeatedly to get our attention.

The lectures are fascinating. She can be a bit dull at times but tries her best to make the class interesting. There are 6 essays (3 required, 3 extra credit). She provides a lot of opportunities for extra credit and she's a really nice professor. It's a lot of reading but you can get by if you don't read everything.

Bernstein was very passionate about French History and spoke with so much detail. I truly enjoyed her lecture, she made sure everyone understood before she moved on. She grades papers really tough but is available for office hours to help you improve.

Boring history class, or at least she made it so. 3 writing papers that were graded hard. Tests are short answer. Lectures are taught out of order and confusing at points. Has an extensive reader and textbook use. She cares about teaching and loves history, but things are not always clear and must work for your grade and understand all events.

Such a sweet woman, very passionate about her field of study and always welcome to questions. I did not find the subject very interesting prior to taking the class however after having taken Western Civ from her I find it significantly less drab. She is an excellent professor and I highly recommend her. Reader: necessary Textbook: rent/borrow
